Hillary Clinton gave us Trump, no so much Obama although he exacerbated the problems. The "recovery" such as it was, only reached the top earners. What was left were a lot of low-paying jobs for the rest.
@dootdoot18676 жыл бұрын
If Obama did a good job.. Democrats would have held office for a decade. He did the same shit.. People are making less today on average then they did before he took office.. And they lost their house. Obama hollowed out the democratic party and gave the houses to the Republicans with no strong push against.. He never used the bully pulpit once to rally support for a democrat or expanded the party into the south where he was actually strong. Obama gave the race to the Republicans. Hillary was gonna run anyway. That was a constant. Every vote Americans have had in the 2000's they have voted for "Change" whatever candidate offered that.

Don't get me wrong, I've loved Thomas Frank since The Baffler. However, I don't understand how he can argue that the Republicans are "exceptionally good" at playing the political game. The Republicans did everything they could think of to lose. They actually thought Jeb! had a chance, threw $$ at him, championed him. This miscalculation could have cost them everything. Even long after it became clear they only had one candidate who stood a chance to win, they did everything in their power to undermine him. Not only did Donald Trump not have the GOP's backing, there was even a group of Republicans who called themselves "Never Trumpers." What a bunch of fools. If they won, it's thanks to Donald Trump who accomplished something that would have been impossible for Rubio, Kasich et al.

You're not smart enough to understand the point that Frank was making. He was saying that if Obama had been a genuine progressive, he would have been so popular that Hillary Clinton would have been elected easily, and he was clearly talking about a world in which she would have also followed progressive policies. If you had kept listening you'd have heard Frank say that Bill Clinton did more to dismantle the New Deal than Reagan or either Bush.

02:57 No, 2008 was nothing like 1932. 2008 was like 1929, when the markets crashed. What happened after 1929, was that the DOW recovered, then went on a 2 year bear market from '30-'32, losing 90% of it's value (the equivalent of today's DOW crashing from 23,000 to 11,000 in 2005, recovering and going from a 23,000 high to 2,300 from 2006 to 2008) and THAT was when FDR was elected. People in 2008 had not gone through the trauma of a 2 year bear market. If they had, they would have demanded that things were done very differently from before. Instead, the market just recovered, and sailed ahead.

Disappointing interview as usual Thomas Frank laughing at his own jokes and providing nothing to substantiate his points...just when he starts to sound though he's getting specific with examples he digresses into something else. Gives the impression he's either forgotten the research to his own book or didn't write it. One comes off not feeling having learned anything new or insightful. The dead giveaway is when Jay corrects him by providing crucial caveats to his own points which he then backs and accepts hoping thereby contradicting everything he just said. I don't know why TRNN keep calling him back for a generalised discussion & wish instead they would put him on the spot to take apart an issue in detail.
