My friend...you are truly the face of America...not stupid Trump! Wish the rest of the world could see more people like you.

I am from Creston, Iowa. I was in high school when this happened. Being the only Chinese in that school, I dealt with racism ALL THE TIME. Even after the incident, things even got worse for me. One girl even told me that I should die because I'm not white. For me to hear you, as a white man, explain why this is wrong, means so much to me. I felt so alone in that community; like I was the only one who stood up against the hate, but to listen to you tell your thoughts on this issue, it just means a lot. Thank you.

Something rancid has come to the surface, that's undeniable. But I think it's better to have it out in the open, where it can be understood and dealt with. Rats are fat and happy in the sewers, they squeal and scurry when the light hits 'em.

Facts bro! Awesome video.. thank you for being such a genuine, good hearted individual. Clearly that's what we lack as a society and those lacks are becoming norms. As a young man growing up and having experienced very similar behaviors from white students at a predominantly white school, I can't agree that the root of the problem stems from the parents. Many of my classmates/ex-teammates who were racist toward me back in grade school, are now very confused about the way they treated me before they grew up and started seeing the world for face value. Thank you for being an advocate for better upbringing of our youth, because where there is chaos & confusion among a society, the change will impact it's citizens accordingly.

As a minority living in Omaha NE, I feel the same as you did when this photo came out. Hopefully things will get better, and the conversations eek out the really reason some people gravitate towards racist indoctrination. Keep up the good work!

I live in California, and I was having coffee with some of my friends of color when a bunch of fucking Nazis rolled up (tats, MAGA hats and all) and started making eyes at us. We got the hell out, but I bring it up just to say that this shit is pervasive, even in places you wouldn't imagine it to be. I get your feeling of disappointment in your neighbors. That's why, when everyone was talking about fleeing the country after the election, I was thinking "I can't leave, I have to stay here to help clean up the mess my people made."

Becoming aware, Joe, is often extremely stressful and even painful. Your safe space is your family, your friends and your home, never be ashamed of that. We all need a safe space because life will show us what we want to see as well as those things that are difficult to see or acknowledge, and that requires strength and character. And hey, let it rip if you need to, it shows you are human. You have my fucking permission.. grin! Oh and don't apologize this is your channel, be yourself.

I don't know what things are like in Virginia, but I don't think most people there are like those types you encountered on the internet. Let's say there were a few thousand people in that comment section supporting the KKK kids. Virginia has a population of 8.47 million, and assuming 2% of it approves of the KKK, that amounts to 169,400 people. Those comments could easily be a small sample of that crowd actively seeking out stories like this to troll about it, assuming they're all even from Virginia. (Anyone in the world could come across that story by searching for it on google.) Any college student newspaper article relevant to race or gender is ripe with troll comments (even at Harvard), and I've noticed that a lot of them come from the same people who don't even go to those colleges. Look at the other end where a few students at Yale were screaming about Halloween costumes in 2015; most students there polled at the time didn't think they were a big deal. While roughly 10% of the American population does view Nazi/white power views as acceptable, the rest of the country does not; the Charlottesville rally was met with backlash all over the South and (excluding Trump) virtually the entire GOP. At the end of the day, these types of people drastically out-speak their own size thanks to the internet; in my life experience, turning off the computer and talking to people in real life (not to mention reading surveys) taught me that most people are more moderate than political fearmongers would want you to think.

I also forgot to talk about the people on facebook - I don't know what your town is like; sure, there can be an unusual problem with racism there. However, you might have just been surrounding yourself with racist people at the time you were still racist; posts you made may have attracted racists while alienating non-racists. You should look up Cambridge Analytica and the recent scandals surrounding facebook - their website algorithms deliberately fill your feed up with content from people and pages you would already agree with.
