Well, who else would go on such a journey. It's a deadly environment all along the way. And Mars too - worst dessert on our planet have at least 20 times better conditions for survival than Mars. In desert, there's at least breathable air, and temperature conditions are far more survivable. Even water is possible to collect from the air. Going to a Mars is probably one way ticket. So, who in normal state of mind would go there

Mars has an atmosphere but it's quite thin. Also a rather weak ozone layer to keep out gama rays and UV. Basically it's equivalent to Mt Everest base camp. You can breathe if you don't strain. To do anything more than walk you need excellent cardiovascular conditioning. Marathon levels. Walking a couple of miles is as demanding as running a marathon. Craters, caves might well offer more atmosphere and protection.

The real question is Are there any living plants that produce the elements of oxygen there? If so, the Mars has the potential to be terra formed and seeded to create a breathable atmosphere for humans and wild life. But so far I haven't seen any plants in the river photos and videos. So it's doubtful. No matter....it will still take at least 100 years to completely terraform it.

Also algae are responsible for highest production of oxygen on earth, and with water availability, they can be seeded. May be some external source of nitrate and phosphate would be required, but it's pretty easy to set up. Atleast in a greenhouse like structure. And can be expanded from there. I feel the low gravity will have the most impact on long term inhabitants.

The lander had an airlock -- a small room that can be isolated from the inside spaces, depressurized, then an outer door opened to permit access to the (pressureless) outside environment.
