Thats what you get for ILM making an animated movie. Sadly they dont do more.

I mean... Define "next gen." Cuz if a movie looking "next gen" means the sort of hyper realism in this movie, then... I'd argue that outside of certain styles, like a dusty western such as Rango, it'd be kinda difficult to make a "next gen" movie, but keep the... Spirit? Heart? No matter. Point is, animation has something that live action doesn't, and making every movie "next gen" kinds of realistic, would run the risk of ruining that. Which is unacceptable.

There's a nice contrast/similarity with this movie and The Last Wish. Rango and Puss both had to face the "grim reaper" and put their pasts behind them, and become better people for the ones they love by throwing away their famous "legend" reputations. And in the end, their greatest enemies respect them for their growth and spare their lives. It's also neat to think about how Rango and Puss both throw the words of their enemies back at them in the climax! Rango: "It only takes one bullet." Puss: "Pick it up."

The setting of this film is actually based off a real like place in California, I believe. Back in the day, Las Angeles was growing at a very quick rate, quicker than it could handle, and it started to run out of water. To solve this, a group of people went out trying to find a water source, and eventually they came across a lake. They then built the famous California Aqueduct that runs across the state. However, over the years, the lake began to run dry. The lake has returned if I am correct but the idea of a body of water going dry to support a city is one similarly shown in Rango.

Rattle Snake Jake, much like The Big Bad Wolf in "Puss in Boots: the Last Wish," is one of the best antagonists in animation history. Interestingly enough, both are in the movie for what barely even amounts to a quarter of the total run time of their respective movies, if that. Really goes to show you that the quantity of given screen time doesn't necessarily mean much compared to the quality of the given screen time. At least, not when dealing with "Force of Nature" style villains.
