"It violates the whole 'everyone has a fair chance' motto". That's the point. The show is a critique of capitalism. And the idea of meritocracy. The people at the top NEED you to think that you can be rich someday otherwise you won't 'play the capitalist game'. If they told you "You will stay at your dead end job, barely making enough to live until you die" People might stop trying or just kill themselves. The Frontman saying everyone is equal, but in actuality that not being the case is on purpose. Same shit with the glass breaking. If the system was a true meritocracy, Sae-byeok would've won, she was the most capable character in the entire show. But LUCK killed her off, much the same way that in capitalism, it's said to be a meritocracy, but some people are born rich, some people are born with a disability. Luck determines so much of your life and just like how it felt unfair for Sae-byeok dying, it's unfair that people born in first world nations will do better than people born in war-torn third world nations.

Yeah I think Matt Patt is a hopeful kinda guy. And he lucked out in the algorithm and so he might have a different look at the world. I think a lot of people take the messages of equality seriously, especially if they have a little taste of the pie. It's not being bad its just having a positive attitude. Kinda like the Frontman. I think he might think the Game is good. I We can tell parables about togetherness and humanity, but Gi Hoon wins even though he's mediocre. And success and appeal is just as random. You come up with a billion dollar idea or you are a dude. Even evil capitalism doesn't rule the day. Fate does. Gihoon survive because of his good heart and caring for others. It's ironic and tragic mean no matter what Sang Woo did that he did not want to do, he was going to lose and people who run our world are Sang Woo. There are no VIP. it's the pessimist drive to wealth that is what operates it. And in the end it doesn't cure his depression save his mom or do anything. Next time you feel insignificant or broke or envious, really sit with those feelings. Your problems aren't more important then you are
@laurettelaliberte88643 жыл бұрын
@Jin sakai Those are not the only two options..
@nantenin1233 жыл бұрын
I don’t think he understands that this game isn’t in the benefit of the players, but for the entertainment of the VIPS i.e more deaths = more cash for the players and entertainment because not every one gets to win the game. Although I agree that Sangwoo should have played with his team instead of against them. But even if it hints at the fact that there can be multiple winners, that’s not the goal. Otherwise they wouldn’t have incorporated the subgames like the riot, or the knife hand-off after dinner. It hinted at that, the moment they gave them a waver to make it seem like it’s all about free choice but while in private they instigate violence resulting in more deaths, burn them alive and use their bodies for organ donation. But I agree with his theory on how to win as a team.

I dont think u properly listened to the video
@nantenin1233 жыл бұрын
Nooo…….I listened well I’m just responding to the part where he was referring to the premise that everyone could have won if they worked together instead of against each other but I disagree because the game was not designed for them to trust each other enough to work as a team. Even if they did, it was shortly lived ones they teamed up only to play against each other in the marble game
@ellie-angel92543 жыл бұрын
I think he was just trying to point out what the players themselves were in control of and could have changed, knowing full well that the VIPs weren't going to change THEIR behavior. Forgoing everything else, if more people had teamed up to survived the riots, half of those survivors would have made it through until the glass bridge. Even if it was just 25 or 50 more people (less than half or a quarter of Mat's best-case scenario) that made it to the bridge, that game and the squid game could have ended very differently and with a lot more winners. It's not about the VIPs necessarily, it's about being smart enough to recognize & not take their (in my opinion VERY obvious) bait and manipulation. Like he said at the beginning, this is what "you" (the watcher) could do if you found yourself tossed into the games.

Greg, we SAW players go ahead of other in the glass bridge game. One player simply stopped and demanded other players go ahead of him. Yea, that's a problem I find with this theory, is that even if the glass manufacturer had told everyone else on how to tell the difference between the tiles, the Frontman would've turned off the lights anyways for the whole game then everyone would be back at square 1. And also I don't agree with Matpat's problem with the glass tiles exploding, there had to be A WAY to eliminate those that didn't finish; if the alternative was the guards shoot at those who didn't finish, they probably would've shot each other on the other side or the surviving contestants on accident.

it's just an illusion that the game can have many winners. i think even the log book mentions only 1 winner per year. if u tell 456 people only one can win, people would be inclined to not try and just give up. If u tell them many can win, u get their hopes up to participate. one winner per year is also the safest thing for the game creator to do. if 10 people win the game, what's stopping them to report to the police at the same time? it's easy to dismiss a wild crazy story from 1 person, it's harder to dismiss it from 10 people.

Matpat's theory reminds me of a Japanese drama of the same genre titled "liar game". In the drama, players are given the opportunity to work together to win the games, but in every round, there would always be someone who'd betray the team for their personal agenda. So, while working together may be the ideal way to go through the games, it's not really the most realistic, especially considering the players are strangers to each other.

That's true but the games take place over a series of days - whether it's during lunch or shortly before bed, there are hours that probably aren't shown where the characters are probably twiddling their thumbs in their bunks and coming down from the adrenaline high. They'd at least be able to think rationally enough to realize SOME of these things during those hours. At the very least the "I should take what I can into the games" thing.
@atkim1223 жыл бұрын
Sang Woo at first seemed selfish to withhold from his friends that the shapes meant they were playing the honeycomb game. But what if there was a twist that we never got on the show,; that only the top 25 fastest finishers in each shape category advanced to game 3? So even if triangle was easiest, Sang Woo's friends become his direct competition. As it turned out, a player's only competition was the clock (and the honeycomb itself), but at that moment Sang Woo had to consider all possibilities.
@atkim1223 жыл бұрын
My criticism of some games is that there's no sure guarantee there would be any survivors. Hypothetically, mass panic could've set in and everyone could've ran (and died) during red/green light. Hypothetically, every one of the sweet 16 could've failed to cross the glass bridge. It seemed important to the VIPs that some survivors make it to game 6 (so they could keep betting), and that's why the guards prevented Gi Hun from killing Sang Woo in anger after Sae-Byeok's death. By contrast, tug-o-war and marbles guarantees a certain percentage of winners.
@VMYeahVN3 жыл бұрын
I think some of Film Theory's arguments in that video are a bit flawed. Similar to how he points out the players taking the "default" rules of the games at face value, i think he's taking the concept that the Frontman and the VIPs want the games to be fair at face value. If it was truly possible or desired for there to be able to be multiple winners, letting players kill each other after the third game and more particularly, providing the final 3 a knife, letting one get killed and then stopping the final two from killing each other kinda proves the desire is for it to get down to one on one. They want the player to have the illusion of fairness while still tipping the scales where they see fit.

I think he's incorrect about that there can be more than one winner. I think they explicitly said at one point that only one person can win, and the final Squid Game only one person can teach the squids head. Also, when the cop saw the list of past winners there was only one winner each year.
@BasicBodThor3 жыл бұрын
This is not true. The first scene in the series explains how squid game works and there were multiple kids on offense and defense. If offense gets to the end that team wins, if defense stops them, that team wins. Squid Game (the actual game not the show) is a team game for kids, it's not played 1v1. And the fact that only 1 winner occurred each year just means that the way people played the game was the same, doesn't mean that only one winner could ever be crowned.

I disagree on the approach that on the glass stepping game on the use of clause 3 to be activated, the show made sure of that by first letting them out, showing them if you opt out now, your life will be back to miserable, that point reinforces that even there's last 13 of them the chances of them having "cold feet" or bailing out is not going to happen, regardless of the first 9 will be a sure elimination, they would still not opt out, and you have to put the gambler's psychology in to consideration, those people have nothing to lose and sheer will to gamble, even the chances are as low as 10 percent, the would rather take the risk than to opt out, and also, it's easy for mat to do calculations at the comfort of his home, but when you are put into the spot on the edge of going through the stepping glass game, i would very much believe even mat would be so stressed and in fear that he might not be able to be so rational and making those calculations, as the saying goes "easier said than done"

Glad MatPat pointed out that these games did, structurally, have the potential to have multiple winners (or even no winners). I remember the scene where the detective searched the archives that only showed 1 winner for the first few years but that doesn't automatically mean that the other years didn't have more winners. It seemed more likely that the ones in charge did their best to push for only a single player to win, but what's to really say that some yrs didn't have at least a couple of winners? While it's probably unlikely there were multiple winners in a single year, it's still possible.
@andromeda1563 жыл бұрын
I think that the games can't afford multiple players winning. If multiple players would have won, they could have stayed in touch, talk, maybe take action. It's important for the games, that there's only one lonely, broken survivor.

The glass bridge is second to last and there's no way of guessing the game. He also ignores the first game of "red light green light" entirely. Because in the game everyone has to blindly guess which glass is safe to stand on, it's 50-50, if you have the ability to tell the difference then your chance will be 100-0, it's not fair for other players who didn't work at making glass. It's a fair and common situation even in real life, if you're playing a game and you know how to break it, then you're not allow to play. If you're Superman and can can see through body with X-ray vision then you're not allow to play "Guess what number I'm holding behind my back", because you're no longer a valid candidate. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Except they clearly did it because it wasn't fun watching them succeed without fatalities. They chose someone with that background to participate and chose the games. Not old guy's fault. Men only teams were not penalized in Tug - of - War despite having a clear advantage over other teams. Dangling the illusion of fairness over the participants is one of the points of the show.

There will always be people getting the wrong way and only watching the show because it's most famous thing in the world right now and not for understanding. Also I see you guys made it up after that erik voss picture. I'm glad John is happy XD.

I watched it in English. Was the first thing I saw when I opened Netflix, don't watch many shows in different languages anyways. Didn't care either way. Still liked the show, and unlike the VIP, I'm not a hard guy to please.

In the glass game, it wouldn't be against the rules if one player held the other while the first one laid down and broke each glass at a time with their arms to see wich ended up not breaking and then walking on those unbreakable ones :)
@jennv29483 жыл бұрын
How would you lay down and break glass?
@ABAO20093 жыл бұрын
@@jennv2948 Like I said, someone needs to hold your legs so you dont fall. The weak glass is easily breakable, its the one used in movies

The Marble game as stated by the rules can actually have everyone survive. "The player who takes all 10 marbles from their opponent wins." They don't actually say that you need to end the game with 20 marbles, so if you each 'take' the marbles from your opponent simultaneously, you have both taken the 10 marbles from your opponent and then you both win.
@ihatetheheat45243 жыл бұрын
I think some people are thinking too deep about the games. Because it seems like everyone who one had 20 marbles. Doesn't seem like others tried the other way

The game definitely treated the people as equals and some people are confusing that equal treatment with experience or natural physical advantage. If someone is bigger and stronger so they have an advantage in a physical game, it wasn't the game which designed it this way unless all the games were strictly physical. Inequality would have per the games rules intentionally helped certain players more than others. For example saying old people get more time. Or women get knives instead of spoons. Even though at some point the men could agree that MALES were their best bet at forming a winning team at nearly anything they could imagine, the game itself did not influence this. It was their own decisions to create an inequality among themselves. Everyone was treated as equals by the game operators.

I watched it originally in Dub so I can actually watch what was going on and not miss anything, then watched it again in Sub, especially good since I know what is going on and can get every detail now. Though as we know, even the Subs weren't perfectly translated, which is impossible anyways since there are words with occasionally two meanings.
@andromeda1563 жыл бұрын
5:15 I disagree, everything is geared towards to one person taking it all. When the detective is going through the winners list, there's only one winner each year. Game 6 is specifically designed to eliminate the majority of players.
@charlesgonzalez14063 жыл бұрын
I don't really know the rules of game 6, but I'm pretty sure it would be a 50% survival game only the losing team would be eliminated
@kamronspencer49103 жыл бұрын
The game makers want only 1 left but the official games and rules don’t limit it to one. They rely on unofficial games like the riot night and the knife handout to get that result and those unofficial games rely on the players to choose to kill each other for no reason
