The noble freedom fighter who incinerated untold thousands in atomic fire to secure his great moral victory. He understood the value of atrocity well enough, even if he pretended not to.’_ Curze shook his head and laughed. _‘You see, that’s what I don’t understand. Why did you breed such a clutch of hypocrites?’_ He wrapped long, bony arms around his knees, and pressed his face into them. _‘I’ll tell you something else,’_ said Curze. _‘I hated him, too. You might think I hated all my brothers. I didn’t. They were the ones that hated me. I could not hate them back. Most of them I could tolerate, a few I respected. A couple I loved, though they never returned the affection. But I hated Corax.’_ He looked aside in shame and spoke to the wall. _‘I hated him so much. ‘I didn’t hate him for being like me, nor for being better, though if he and I were two aspects of the same principle, he was the better one. Everything about us was so similar, to your design,’_ Curze said significantly. _‘Was he not born into awful straits? Was he not victimised? Oppressed? But he did not murder like I did. He used passion and argument where I used blood. I hated myself for not being like him, but I couldn’t despise someone for being what I was not. Why would I hate him for any of those things?’_ He looked back at the statue and cleared his throat theatrically. _‘Was it that he failed like I did to fully tame his world, meekly handing it over to the Mechanicum? Did I hate him because he was weak?’_ He pressed his face hard into his updrawn knee. _‘I couldn’t hate him for that, either.’_ He sneered, gnawing at his skin until blood ran. _‘I’ll tell you why. Envy of his mastery lay behind my hatred. I haunted the night, but Corax owned it.’_ Breath hissed through dagger teeth. _‘He owned it. My stupid, short-sighted sons thought the Ravens’ abilities came from technology given only to the Nineteenth. I saw it was innate. Imagine what I could have done had you given the same gifts to me? How much more perfect a monster I would have been had the shadows loved me as much as they loved Corax!’_ - Konrad Curze, the Night Haunter, Primarch of the Night Lords
@angelusumbrae Жыл бұрын
I've always felt sad and sorry about Curze. He did make the choice to be the Night Haunter on Nostromo, but all of the Primarchs were molded by the worlds they landed on. And they all acted in ways that would work on those planets. So, in a way, he didn't really have a choice. Adding on top of that the horrific psyker visions that Konrad was troubled by during his entire life, he is a walking tragedy... And this quote shows that better than anything I've ever seen or heard.

Konrad Curze was perhaps one of the greatest tragedies that befell the Imperium for their hints of the Primarch that he could have become, a Warrior of Justice and Honor with the gift of foresight, but he landed in such a hostile and horrific planet that will shape him to being one of the worst monsters in the Grim Darkness of the far future.
@aarond162229 күн бұрын
No, it's not that. Others fell into hostile worlds too. The thing about Konrad was he was totally alone. No surrogate family or even friends or peers. Even Angron had his fellow gladiators. Nah, being utterly alone shaped him.
@lexyinspace Жыл бұрын
I'd just like to share a perspective on Curze that I don't see talked about a whole lot, because it is the reason he became my favorite Primarch by a legitimate country mile. His mind, while entirely broken at the best of times, retains a certain degree of childish innocence that I find to be both tragic and gruesomely sympathetic. And I don't mean innocence in the sense that he is blameless or good, but in the sense that he doesn't understand the world around him beyond a childlike level of comprehension. See, I'm studying child psychology as a part of my teacher's college education, and I couldn't help but think of Curze while reading through one of my textbooks. While discussing various theories of childhood development, the book addresses Kholberg's six stages of moral development, which tries to explain how kids develop a sense of what is right and what is wrong. I will quote the book to explain my thoughts. "Level 1: Preconventional Morality. Seen in preschool children [and] most elementary school students. Stage 1: Punishment-Avoidance and Obedience. Individuals will make decisions... without regard for others' needs or feelings. They obey rules... established by more powerful individuals... The only "wrong" behaviors are those that will be punished" I did omit some information from that quote as it doesn't necessarily apply to Curze, but as you can see it seems to describe his thoughts about the world to a tee. And it's how a toddler thinks. Fundamentally, Curze is a little kid in a great big man's body. And is it any wonder that he's like this? He had no mentor, no parent, nobody at all on Nostramo. As a result of that, and according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which dictates that people develop psychologically only when certain needs are met (eg. when you have food, water and basic shelter you can afford to spend more time thinking about, understanding, and ultimately pursuing things like wealth and family), he never developed past early childhood in a psychological sense. He was too busy just trying to survive. He is consistently compared to a child in his Primarch book, and in that respect, a lot of his behaviour starts to add up. He's shown to be very emotional and quick to cry, like a little kid. He pitches tantrums all the time (RIP Nostramo) like a little kid. He acts out for attention, believes that everyone is mad at him, and self-isolates whenever faced with any degree of adversity or pushback, like a little kid. He brings out my momma bear instincts, and tbh if he had a mentor of ANY kind he would have been able to fulfill more of his hierarchy of needs and develop past being just a little kid. And damn you Big E if a 19 year old education major can figure this out you should have been able to, too! Anyways, thanks for reading all the way to the bottom if you're still here (seriously, that's legend shit). Much love

So many people forget that Konrad's plan of improving his world was only half done. The point was never to stop at the serenity of terror-quieted criminals brought to heel by violence. It was to use the peace thus gained to fuel progress, true progress, and the Night Haunter never got to enact that part of his plan. To judge him for half his work is to miss a key part of his character. It's sad that we never got to see what he might have achieved.
@NoTimeAllTime Жыл бұрын
True but one of the massive failures of his plan, that really came back to bite him with the degradation of Nostramo and its recruits, was that the entirety of his entire planetary government was just himself. He was a king with no court and so when he left he was just...gone, leaving no one to carry out the rest of his plan. He had a vision once of taking in a young boy and making him his right hand, the first of a new order to carry out justice and progress but he also had a vision that the boy could stab him and make him look weak so instead of offering the boy his hand he killed him. Ironically the knife the boy could have used was out of his reach.

This is why Konrad Curze was the best Primarch of the best Legion. They saw the galaxy for what it really was, full of darkness and depravity in all different forms, and the true Night Lords sought to exact justice in their own way. Punish the criminal, spare the innocent. They wanted compliance through fear, not annihilation, and saw the Imperium for what it truly was, hypocrisy, just like Chaos. Which is why they refuse to worship Chaos but merely use it as a tool against the corrupt Imperium and the false Emperor.

Pretty much every other Legion with a homeworld established a recruitment and induction apparatus, and initial training facilities with Legion veterans. Did Night Lords do different? Did they eschew the Astartes presence and Only have Legion serfs recruiting and training aspirants? We know they received Nostroman recruits in droves. So Someone was sending them... and would they trust that job to essentially menials without Any Astartes oversight? Or did they Maintain an Astartes presence on Nostromo... who watched the decline, the reverting back to the criminality their father had brutalised out of society, and did Nothing to continue his work? Would love to see a novel explaining what happened between Kurze's leaving, and his furious heartbroken return.

He was cloaked "Guilaman...i dont have much time left so i need to be quick,curze is in the gem of the crown i hold...the emporors blade...if there is any shred of His sanity left...please...do something..." Sevatar dropped to his knee coughing blood. "I dont see why i should heed what you say sevatarion. ...but answer me one question. Why me of all people?" Sevatar struggled to his feet as he tried to hold on to life. "Your the only primarch... with actual sanity...ive done what i can to reach him...please...free him from his madness..." Sevatar fell,dead. As the ultramarines arived led by sicarius,guilaman was shocked. "My lord what...has happened here?" "...put the fortress of hera on high alert. As for this night lord here...have the apothecary do what he can on him. He will not die yet." As guilaman dissmissed the marines,alone, guilaman looked at the sword,then to the crown. "If you are here my lord...then do what you must." The swords fire engulfed the crown, hissing in black and gold fire. Within the soul gem of the corona nox, curze would scream in pain. "Enough konrad. I am here." "I am not...konrad curze...i am...the night haunter..." "No. You are my son konrad. Let me help you...listen to my voice." As the light subsided...the crown and gem went from a sickly dark black,to a vibrant and holy white. A few hours later, guilaman arives to the hospital wing. Sevatars hands would be bound but healing. "Leave us." The marines left,leaving the 2. "You should have finished me. But i am grateful." "I kept you alive because you still owe me answers. Two things: (1) "elucidate" cannot be used with people as the objects of the verb; for instance, you cannot elucidate a person. You can elucidate the nature of a person, or the history of a person, but not the person himself. You use this in every video so I felt the need to correct it. (2) "fiefdom" is pronounced "feef-dumb", not "fife-dumb". I'm not sure if you have used it before, but other WH40K KZbinrs have and many say "fife-dumb" for some reason.

The only thing I don't like in Konrad was torturing of Vulcan. Otherwise I agree with his philosophy. People are evil by the nature and only fear makes them to abide the law.

*SIDE NOTE # 2: I TRULY LOVE THE NIGHT LORDS (AS MUCH AS A RAVEN GUARD CAN LOVE HIS TRAITORUS EVIL DOPPELGANGERS, THAT IS!!) AND THEY HAD / HAVE SOO MUCH POTENTIAL...THE THING I FIND MOST SORROWFUL AND TRAGIC HOWEVER, IS THAT THE EMPORER (ONCE AGAIN....NOT DESERVING THE {#1 DAD!} 👕TEE-SHIRT!), COULD HAVE CALMED KURZES NIGHTMARES, TAUGHT HIM TO CONTROL HIS VISIONS, AND ALSO, EXPLAINED THAT NO FUTURE PROPHECIES ARE SET IN STONE. THAT THE FUTURE CAN BE CHANGED THROUGH ONES ACTIONS OR CHOICES. KURZE BELIEVED THAT HIS VISIONS WERE FINITE.... BUT THIS WAS NOT TRUE.... AND HIS EXISTENCE WAS TRAGIC AND TORTURED... ALL BECAUSE THE EMPORER COULDN'T JUST HAVE A GAME OF CATCH WITH HIM AT THE PARK, AND THEN GAVE HIM "THE TALK" ABOUT GIRLS... AND THAT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT FLAY THEM ALIVE....THEY TEND NOT TO LIKE THAT.
