Some of us have a tendency to fixate on the technology. You did the right thing; You noticed something was amiss, spent some time trying to figure it out, then abandoned that and went back to being PIC "fly the airplane". Thanks for the lesson.

I am absolutely grateful for you for posting all your videos, even the ones where mistakes occur. It takes a real pilot to admit when they are wrong, but a whole other level of respect when share to the public. I have learned so much you; even the steps to correct your own faults and make it right for the future. When I retire from the military you are definitely someone I want to fly with. Take care and fly safe.

good for you that you fly with the FD (!) - too many piston drivers do not fly (or have not been taught how to) with the FD! Very thorough pre-departure briefing. You obviously had great instructor(s) - keep it up - with your rigor you can fly a jet.

I can't understand why a pilot who had FD would not use it. It's like having a co-pilot in the plane with you. Cheers-Ren

@@renmanmb Agreed - however, in my opinion, too many CFI(I)'s are too in-experienced - it takes an experienced (Jet) CFI to having been training with FD to be able to relay that to the (new) student; I recently transitioned from a Cirrus SR22 to a Citation, and it wasn't until my FlightSafety initial that i really understood the value of the FD.... now i wouldnt fly without it, even in a Piston.

@@robertg5393 I've been making it a point lately to fly departure procedures and short flights without autopilot to make sure I don't become complacent. Check out my most recent video and you'll see that while I don't use AP on the SMO departure I'm absolutely locked on to those pink bars on the FD and keeping the flying V's tucked tight. It makes it so much easier to fly the plane with precision. If you make it down to SM I'd love to sit shotgun in that Citation! Cheers-Ren

Thank you once again for another fantastic video. I must say that your meticulous attention to detail, calm demeanor and thoroughness remind me very much of my father, who in my estimation was without a doubt one of the finest pilots I’ve ever flown with. He held every rating possible for a GA pilot including a CFI. I miss him greatly. Your videos bring back many memorable flights I shared with with my dad. Keep them coming.

Hi Ren, just found you and I am so thankful and appreciative! I have 2015 SR22T, am a rusty pilot w/ 100hrs in this fantastic machine and just started my IFR work. I live in Seattle and fly out Boeing Field so IFR is a must and cloud layers are frequent. Your work here is so helpful, motivating and I have no doubt will aid me in journey to get my ticket. Im looking to do your exact camera set up so I can learn as well. My very best to you and your audience Ren.

Another great video Steve! Yesterday, I had a great flight in my SR20 to KSAC for lunch. There was a SR22 G6 (lime green, I believe "Carbon" ) two planes ahead of me. Ended up meeting the pilot who was in the restaurant. Super nice guy who is based in KPAO and had picked up his aircraft earlier this year. I can't tell you how badly I want one of those beauties.

Thanks Zach. Glad you are enjoying your training and you are lucky to be doing it in a Cirrus even if it is a SR20. That does not suck. As for the G6 I'm betting you'll be flying one of those sooner than you think.

Good video. What I don't get -- if you dialed in the NAV freq, switched over the CDI needle, why did you blow through your final? Did you have the right radial? I mean, given the approach plate, you should be able to just manually fly the approach whether it's loaded or not... PS.: You just ended up doing a visual approach, which is an IFR maneuver, not a VFR one.

Ren, takes a big man to post mistakes, thanks for sharing. One hint I learned as I near my checkride is after you brief the approach, switch back to flight plan and confirm the intermediate altitudes on the flight plan screen and MDA that you loaded via the timer/ref button, you would have caught this. Also, on the perspective you need to change the CDI to green needles for a VOR approach, it doesn't do it automatically where LOC and ILS modes do. Pretty sure the + is the same, flying one Wednesday so I'll check that out too. Great video. Paul

Thanks for the comments. I'm not afraid of the world finding out I make mistakes as long as they are not showstoppers. I video just about every flight so I can go back and see what I got right and what I got wrong. It's a great learning tool for me and if I had chosen to be a flight instructor instead of a music pro for a living I'd video every single session and make my students go home and study it. So I'm happy to see that my mistakes can help others. And you are right the CDI does not switch on Loc and VOR. The truth is since I got my Cirrus I've not flown a VOR approach until this flight. But I'll be flying one to KFUL again tomorrow. I'm betting it goes alot better.
@aviatortrevor6 жыл бұрын
If it's a VOR approach (and I don't mean a "VOR or GPS" approach), you can still leave the CDI mode in GPS (purple) mode and have the autopilot track that as long as you are "monitoring" the VOR nav source. This can be done on the G1000 with bearing pointers to NAV 1 or 2 (whichever one you want to tune the VOR on). This isn't just me saying that. The FAA released official guidance on this a few years ago. If it's a "VOR or GPS" approach, then you can just leave the CDI mode in GPS (purple), and don't worry about the bearing pointer thing.
@alan1newport6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting, very nice. You almost had things corrected without the automation - the one last step was to swing the OBS to 020 and fly the CDI and with the alt steps and you would have had it! Yes I think that lesson #1 learned was to load the approach, but lesson #2 might be to follow through by hand if the automation isn't working, possibly for reasons other than not loading.

Thanks for your comments which I think are right on target. It's funny every day I fly is a new lesson being learned. This past week I passed the 500 hours mark in a little more than 2 years of flying now. And while that sounds like alot of hours I still feel like I just started. Getting the Cirrus though has been a big step up in game and a real challenge in putting all its considerable toolkit to work. But as you noted, when things are not doing what you think they should be doing you gotta just fly that thing old school! Thanks for watching and taking the time to offer some suggestions. Cheers-Ren

Hi Ren, great video, I enjoyed watching. One hint regarding VOR approaches and CDI change. Unlike with ILD approaches, the needle is not automatically changing to green, with VOR approaches you have to manually switch the CDI button to green. Cheers, Stephan SR-22 G6

Flight is made too complicated. Making the flight to KFUL from KSMO perhaps when you are turned to SLI, why not just simply dial dial in SLI KNOWING YOU are going to cross at 2,600 msl an follow the 020 radial to the airport. Sometimes using raw data is best?

I won't make a negative comment about this video. I will however suggest you might want to look at the flight simulator X-Plane. It has some great Garmin Equipped G-1000 FMS's and they work very well. Why spend hundreds of dollars/hr "learning" in air, when you can get proficient at home. My 2 cents...
@renmanmb5 жыл бұрын
Doug Bolton thanks for your comments. Believe it or not I’m quite familiar with X-Plane. In fact I have a simulator setup at home and used it extensively in IFR training and I think it’s great. But while it was a valuable training tool it was a little like being a great driving range golfer. If you screw up you just restart and do it again. Kind of like a mulligan in golf. But in the real world, in the air, with no pause button it’s different. You have to live with and learn from your mistakes in real time. The good news is that if you live through your mistakes up in the air the lessons I’ve learned stick.

Again, great stuff. Curious what was the lesson that you learned and how you plan to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Do you put that into a check list? This is great stuff because...it's really about the life and times of flying with a new gen panel.

I think their is too much technology on that plane for you. You need to be fully proficient in it otherwise I worry when you really need it you will be out of your depth. This is an accident waiting to happen.
