Ren Baron takes an early morning IFR flight down the Southern California coastline to San Diego in some very busy airspace. It's a great IFR workout with plenty of action.

I love your videos. You once said that you are the most boring pilot on KZbin. I beg to differ. Your attention to detail is solid and though I’m not a private pilot as of yet. I value what you do and how you do it and why you do it. You are very informative when it comes to detail when you fly. I also appreciate your new simulator setup. If you are ever in my part of the country (South Florida), contact me. Again, thank you for your attention to detail as you fly. I’m sure there are many who appreciate your style and the KZbin clips you post. Amen.

Well thank you Roger. I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you find the videos helpful. I actually may get down to South Florida this year. The wife and I are contemplating another x-country flight to Key West. I'll keep you posted. Cheers-Ren

Here's why you missed V23 on the 090 heading over SNA - it's a shortcut and not actually on your route (yet). This is commonly missed, especially for pilots not familiar with our shortcuts for these San Diego area routes. The standard routing takes you behind SNA to avoid opposite IFR traffic also at 6,000 coming FROM the San Diego area. If there's no opposite traffic at the time, our intent is to have you instead join V23 somewhere between SLI and DANAH. HOWEVER, that portion of V23 doesn't technically exist on the routing. After the controller gave you the vector back to 140 to rejoin, eyeballing it and then hitting direct DANAH was a good recovery. What I've been issuing recently is direct MIDDS then DANAH/OCN (if I am fairly certain you have GPS capabilities.) Alternatively, add SLI prior to DANAH, activate leg TO DANAH. There you go.

It's great to hear the controller perspective on this. This one can be confusing the first time you get it. I botched a couple of times in the past. And I've found there are a couple of different ways to handle it. In the past I've gone on my flight plan and deleted the waypoint between SLI and Danah, effectively making SLI/DANAH the active leg. Just adding SLI in front of DANAH is much easier. Or you could do what I did this time and just fly the heading until I got close to V23 and then go Direct DANAH. Why not just give a Direct DANAH from where I was?

@@TheRenBaron (Yep, you could delete V64/WOKRO/V363/ELB/V363. Why isn't WOKRO in the clearance? Nobody knows.) SNA Departures climb straight to 5,000 and we want to keep them climbing without stopping. If you're west of V23 abeam SNA, the departures would have to level off at 5,000. Establishing on V23 by MIDDS keeps you over top of the departures for the next sector. Same reason for TEC routes coming northbound on V23. These routes remain on V23 and then when they get up near MIDDS, we clear direct POPPR/LAX. Clearing direct sooner, would creep them offshore and the departures would have to level off. 🤓

I really enjoyed this Tec’ing , short for TEC routing, video. I appreciate your commentary and the occasional views of your PFD and MFD. I try to get a monthly tec’ing in just to stay sharp and to not let LA airspace get to me. Recently stepped up to the 22T - things happen even faster in a 22T.

Loading the TEC routes from Foreflight to the MFD is much easier than adding all those waypoints manually. But the idea of a kind of shorthand for all those waypoints in busy airspace makes things easier on the pilots and controllers. I don't see it much outside of LA/SoCal much though.

Great flight Steve! That second Tracon controller gave you a guided tour of the shoreline via vectors. He must have liked your performance because he gave you an enthusiastic "See Ya" at the end. :)
