!!!!READ!!!!One year with this amazing horse.. I can't believe how far we've come- from a malnourished, terrified, shy, stressed out and borderline crazy horse to a loving and trusting teammate with a heart of gold. As you can see it's not like she transformed from "crazy to normal"- she's still got her sassy moments, she's still leaping and rearing around and she's still quirky. The biggest difference is how much she trust me and how we've developed into a team. She's my one in a million. From 90cm to 1.25m in under a year, where we've placed at most of our shows despite my lack of a riding arena, trainer and money. The odds are and have been against us from the start, but sometimes the underdog rise.
I don't have many "everyday" clips, which is kind of gutting as that's where the biggest difference is. I couldn't ride out on her alone because we would end up in a ditch or she would leap into the roads. I couldn't ride her with anyone either, because she would freak out with other horses. I couldn't tack up- she would run around in the crossties. She couldn't stand to be alone and broke out of her stall and paddock. She wouldn't stand still for a second on the trailer, with the farrier or anything else. She was incredibly skinny and refused to eat. When jumping she was always very brave- if you could get her to the fence.. She leaped towards the gate, reared around.. And if you got to point her to the fence she would take off in full speed and burn over it. Riding her on he flat was basically impossible, she just wanted to run and if you didn't let her, she'd just leap and jump around. She was so stressed and scared, and I don't have many photos or videos of much of what I mentioned above but believe me, I remember it.

Congratulations. That's how me and my pony are. She wasn't trained for what I wanted to do. People had doubts that I couldn't ride her and that we needed to sell her. I never gave up. She is my forever heart horse.

Thank you for loving and staying with Cara. Sometimes all a broken horse needs to hear, in order to heal, is this: “I refuse to stop loving you.” God is also very good with this His FAVORITE approach to broken people He intends to completely heal. 🐺🇺🇸

You and cara remind me much of me and my mare I've had her for a year and a half; when I got her she was skinny; and although she was calm she was very nervous about anything and almost everything. When trotting a year ago she would prance around and would go rather fast with her legs, she would be above the bit and would be hollowed out even if asked to lift her back. She had a huge love for jumping but she not I were ready to take in jumping; so we began our career in Dressage. I had 2 years before on lesson horses who were slow and had one bad fall that put me out for a year and a half. My horse helped me overcome the fears of cantering and the fears of going fast! I stuck to the slow horses because I was comfortable; when I got my mare she was speedy and uncontrollably she never reared or bucked but did crow hop when she was unbalanced she got anxious easily and cantering was hard. No even trotting was hard at the time and even walking! She didn't know how to stretch because she was to busy worrying over what will happen next. I quit riding her for a few weeks and worked on free lunging, free jumping, and a lot of liberty and ground work. After quite a bit of that; we started riding again. She was a tad better and was more focused on me; I was able to get her to come on the bit willingly and now we had built the connection we rode from there and went to trot on the bit and it nice and slow we even got a 9 on 2 of the struggles in the past (medium walk and working trot.) it's been quite a few months since the show I didn't canter at the show but I wasn't ready then. Her walk and trot was all good now but it took a year; her canter was the hard part. She will go on the bit but she has only been angered a handful of times before I got her (she was a pasture horse all her life after she was broke.) I've only had 3 trainers and now I have none and have had none since November. Today I cantered slow and steady on the hit yes it was a tad fast but way slower then days before!!! We are finally progressing a lot! Your horse reminds me of mine because of the journey you have had with cars! Good luck reaching the Olympics!! YOU WILL BE THERE!!! AND YOUR PROBABLY GONNA BE ABOARD THE BEAUTIFUL CARA!!

This is one of my favorite progress stories. Any real upper level horse is going to have quirks, and I think that's what makes her such a great horse. I really hope her previous owners see where she is now and are extremely ashamed and embarrassed in themselves. They threw away a pure diamond. Major hats off to you as always! :)

Hi from Cheshire England 👱. I'm old enough to be your mum and hav watched ur videos for some time now. ..I know about horses but am by no means an expert. ..but i see ur totally natural ability to ride. This natural ease u hav cannot be taught. ... it's just there. Cara is a complicated lady! ! People hav dissed u about how tight u hold her mouth. I hav agreed I admit but hav been in that situation myself when u just feel I HAVE TO SLOW DOWN PLEASE!! I think it's a tribute to ur skill you've not experimented with a harsh bit or any fancy gadgets to confuse her. ....and very importantly in my eyes. ....never seen u carry a whip of any kind. 👱 x

Your mare reminds me of Touch of Class, a small TB mare that was an incredibly difficult ride (some might say a bit crazy) who won the Olympic Gold in '84 with Joe Fargis. Most of the people who "offered" suggestions in previous videos on how to ride this horse would step right off her the minute she started to do her thing. Kudos to you that you sat calmly and persevered.

What an amazing sight. So much scope in her jump and talent! She was a naturally born jumper, and I could see that on all of the vids before she became who she is today. What an amazing rider and owner you must be to bring this girl on. She didn't do this all by herself you know, you get her to this stage, she couldn't do it without you. All of those winning ribbons show you just how incredible it is. Even though she has her quirks, that makes her who she is! Cara without rearing and leaping ins't Cara at all! Like my welsh sec D Bryn is very sassy, he turns around on his heels and bolts down the other end of the school, or he will come a a jump and jump way way way back or will jump 4 foot in the air to jump an 80cm jump LOL! Not ever horse is perfect to begin with. But they can be when you put in the time and patience and love, which is what you did! ( Minus the quirks LOL!) I wish you the very best of lucky and joy in the future, xx

Its been almost 3 years now with my gelding, and progress has been a rise and fall. Most of the time i've had him he's struck a field injury, or gone lame for some reason or another so we have had barely any time to make progress.. He's nappy, i can ride him out alone to a certain part of the road and he just spins, rears, bolts... He naps when jumping and doesn't focus, fights me in the school... However, with my confidence as low as it is, i've decided now is the time to try and fix this, to overcome these problems. He's come so far, we jumped a 95 spread with a 90cm gap a few weeks ago, he schools like a dream when he puts his heart in it... He's just silly... I've decided now to get professional help with him, and i've been feeling pretty down... But i've just come across your video and realised we can do this, much like you two did... we will find our break, we will compete, we will reach our goals.. Thank you!

Some of Cara's "antics" look familiar from what I went through with my girl. You handled it well and went with it rather than trying to fight her. You gained her trust and respect and now she's giving you her heart. All horses have their quirks, but I think that's what makes them special. If all horses were perfect all the time, what fun would that be? We'd never learn or improve. Besides -- I like a little fire under the saddle -- tells me the horse is awake, listening, and reacting to their environment rather than just plodding along. Nice job with Cara -- you two look like a perfect match.

You should be so proud. You've done an amazing job with her. I've just got mine back from a loan home after they neglected her and if turns out half as good as yours I'll be so happy 😊

I really wish I lived near you. Your riding inspires me. If you lived near me I would beg you to give me lessons☺️. I just wanted you to know that you should NEVER give up and that in a couple of years when I am your age, I want to be just like you. I love you Therese

omg I never realised how much you two changed but Cara and you have in such a short time so much achieved! Your are such an amazing rider with an amazing horse, I think Cara is a very very difficult horse to ride but when you ride her it looks so easy. When you got Cara she didn't look like a good jumper but a very low fat horse. Maybe we see you once at the olympics, I really think that. sorry for al the misspellings, english is very hard for me. *ps when I was watching this video I got goosebumps on my body ;:O
