Thanks for the video. I watch BIM after dark instead of Netflix on Saturday nights :) P.S. you can also draw your ducts in plan view and when two ducts/pipes at different elevations meet, the vertical connection will happen automatically.

Cool stuff! If anyone's interested, I believe the default material for a duct or pipe segment can only be set in the Manage>MEP Settings>Mechanical Settings menu when creating a new duct type or pipe type. The materials for fittings are just associated with the geometry created in each fitting family, which will need to be set (or parameterised), and then loaded and configured for your new segment type's routing preferences. It's a pretty average workflow but it does make sense. I think system graphical overrides was created as a workaround to speed things up. But they suck. If you draft mechanical for a living its well worth spending the time to create & set up 'default' materially accurate fittings and segments, then create systems with no overrides, and then just use filters to colour by system when drafting using some working views/sections with view templates.

Great tip! Yes! The only way to OVERRIDE that default is with systems material.

Hi Will, just learning Revit. I am a injured mechanical contractor/master plumber. I am hoping to use my knowledge. You have any recommendations to fast track learning revit?

Ducts are sized on air flow and the required velocity. Air flow can be calculated on air changes for the room or number of occupants. Brilliant channel Jeff. Enjoyed watching. We use the Autodesk fabrication addin but that presents a whole set of new problems to get your head around.

Awesome! I am a HVAC guy, just getting in to Revit. Size of ductwork is based on heat loss and gain, with some other flow factors. I know Revit has way to do this heat load calc now, sorry don’t ask me, just getting in. Fabrication objects are the most realistic, because the generic families are not being more developed because of the level of detail. The above applies for piping also.

That's great, but how do we know what size ducts to use, and when to drop down in size? Does that all come from the engineer in sketch form?
