For some of us, spending $5000 more to get a more powerful engine makes sense. For others, it doesn't.
You're going to have to decide which camp you fall into, but the Subaru Outback XT turbo models are going to set you back $5000 more if you want them. And there's nothing different in terms of specification, so you're just spending a holiday's worth of cash for some power and torque.
You'll see -- I did the $/Nm calculations in the review -- but there is more to it in terms of ownership costs. The turbo is a guts when it comes to fuel consumption, but amazingly is a little more affordable to maintain when it comes to servicing.
So, which will it be? Tell me your thoughts in the comments!

Great review, thanks Matt. I am about to retire, and I’ve decided on the Touring XT because it represents the best bang for buck on the market right now for me. The mid-range power is really important to me because it makes the experience more relaxed and if you want to hustle along a bit, you can do that too. Subaru dealers seem to focus on customer care, which is super important to me as well. Love the autumn green colour!

I got mine two weeks ago and it's a lovely, comfortable car. The seats are great on a long drive and the car has a safe premium feel with plenty of power where you want it. The CVT is fantastic; very smooth with power delivery, making a great combination with the turbo charged engine. I came out of a 200 series landcruiser, and I'm very happy.

The best value wagon in Australia. So versatile and comfortable across many terrains. Considering most Australians drive 90% of our time on tar the Outback still manage masters luxury offroad when needed. As for the turbo its glorious and provides the power you need to keep you going and get you out if trouble on roads at times. The main negative everyone always brings up is fuel consumption compared to other brands however when filling the tank its such a minor difference. The extra cost is worth it. Still made in Japan and still remains a high quality build.

I’ve slept three nights in the boot of my brand new XT while camping, was the third time I drove it. It’s a bit shallower than I’d have preferred (I’m a 5’4” female) but it’s doable 👌 insulation was fantastic so I didn’t freeze. It also beautifully handled the mild off-roading conditions and shallow creek we drove through to get to the campsite. Especially for such a long car.

I have one and I’m getting fuel consumption under 10 and I have a permanent Thule box. I came from a hilux and it’s more efficient and cheaper to fuel given the cost of diesel. It’s also miles better to drive and takes everything I need to camp. This is not a vehicle you buy to drive to the shops. It’s a people and object hauler for those who want to get away camping or haul stuff to activities like cycling. On that basis it’s the best station wagon out there by far.

Thanks Matt - as mentioned in previous reviews I’ve owned 10 Subarus with three of them turbos WRX, Outback and Forester - the Outback was in name only not in nature though even for a ‘96 model it was very upmarket inside and very comfortable in all road conditions - I tried steep forest tracks but due to its long nose and tail kept ‘digging’ into the terrain so I changed this for the Forester with the much better approach angles which was even better after fitting a Subaru bullbar - generally I found the normally aspirated engines quite capable and reliable even when trekking to Karijini Nat Park and Mt Tom Price WA - the extra cost for turbos now including high premium fuel prices and CVT in all models is a deal-breaker for me but I still own a ‘06 Forester with no head gasket issues even after 320000 kms.

Mat, great video... I just purchased the Outback Limited XT in the US. I really wanted the moon roof, which it comes with. If I had ordered the non-turbo version, then opted for the moon roof, the cost difference was just a little over 2000.00. Which for me, isn't really enough savings, to skip on the XT. A little nervous on what the ultimate gas mileage I will get... but it has to be better than my Grand Cherokee... at 15 miles per gallon.

Thanks Matt, again you came up with a different opinion out of this review where most of the other channels said Turbo is the one to have . But the topic of spending 5000 on something else is debatable. I mean 'extra' or irrelevant spending is there almost everywhere. Why people buying 4x4 for school duties and city driving. Could have saved thousands compared to a regular suv 😊.

Good review, thanks. Got the current model sport with the standard engine and do all my driving on the open road, and like you I’m thinking it has enough choof. Open road fuel economy is only marginally worse than the forester diesel I had before. Still mulling the XT for a replacement, liking the diesel-like torque, the lower noise level at speed and the longer service interval, not so much the fuel cost premium. My main reason for upgrading to touring spec is the water resistant seats in the Sport. They’re sweat resistant as well, with uncomfortable results in a Queensland summer, despite the air con. Thanks for keeping my feet on the ground with your review.

Nice review but saying you would choose the turbo if it $3K dearer than the N/A but not $5K does not make a lot of sense to me on when you are paying over $50K either way. For that $3K you also get a sunroof and leather seats, ventilated front seats, two-memory driver's seat, a heated steering wheel, an upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system, a CD player and a vehicle that will likely hold its value better when it's time to update. The turbo is more effortless to drive. By the way, my experience with 3 Subarus, including one 4 cyl turbo and a 6 cyl 3.6 N/A is that fuel economy improves with some mileage on them. And no, I don't work for Subaru.
@therightcar
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
What I’m saying is you get all that for less if you don’t want the turbo. So if you don’t have the extra $5000 to spend (thanks inflation and interest rates) you might be fine with the standard engine.

I would pay the $5k in a heartbeat! It's the 95RON that is a deal breaker for me, it's currently 190.9 for 95 vs 175.9 for regular, that's substantial. It surprises me that this fact doesn't get mentioned more often in reviews. Also, not sure why it is 91RON in the US. Can you actually run the XT on 91RON without any risk of damage?
@therightcar
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
I’m no chemist, but it’s to do with the difference in the quality of the refined oil that we use vs USA, I think? And you’re right. 95 premium is priced high - but I would spend the extra on the fuel if you’re willing to pay overs for the engine.
@Natethemeercat
@Natethemeercat Жыл бұрын
@therightcar my limted research indicates that 91RON is equivalent to 87RON in the US. The US uses an anti knock index. Essentially, for any given fuel, RON is about four points higher than the Anti-Knock Index. That would make the US 91 equivalent to AUS 95. Checks out haha 😄

Choosing the trim with the turbo in the US is about $6000 more after tax. In addition to a more powerful engine, you get more standard equipment: 1. powered front seats, 2. heated rear seats , 3.full size spare tire, 4. moon-roof, 5. navigation, 6. reverse automatic braking, 7. front view camera. These features are not crucial but are nice to have. probably worth around 2k+ by themselves, so technically you are paying around 3k+ for the 2.4t engine. More importantly, the 2.4t engine might have less issues than the 2.5 engines, which is known more likely to have oil consumption and leak issues. Those issues are expensive to repair and could affect the overall lifespan of the Outback. It definitely outweigh the gas mileage difference. The 2.4t engine could potentially have belt and water pump issues, but those are easy to maintain and cheaper to fix. The 2.4t engine is also able to keep high torque output in a wider RPM range, from 2k to 4k, while 2.5 reaches highest torque around 4k(I think?). So definitely more capable and fun than the 2.5. I recently just bought a 2.5 outback, it is so smooth to drive, I like it very much. I think the power and potential issues of the 2.5 engine are the only weak points of my car. the 2.5 version outback get you the best bang for the bucks on paper, but 2.4t engine could make the outback a perfect car in my opinion, but I only learned that after buying the car. So please think more than I did before you choose the engine.

The only thing I could have been more thrilled about is the rather blah power of the 2.5. It's not terrible, but it's a little anemic when you need a burst of power. The XT would fix that, no doubt. Did you mention the turbo engine is a bit noisy? Is that ture? A lot of the reviews say it is quieter.

It is noisy at idle. Quieter at speed and definitely more hushed under loaded acceleration.

That’s fair. But it’s still a bit pricey compared to the NA. However, since I filmed this I think I have realised that, if I was financing it and the repayments meant sacrificing a takeaway coffee per day, I’d do it.

Thats the new modus operandy of Subaru, eliminated the STI and the WRX new cost is the same as Old STI without the same power and gadgets, the Forester is no longer Turbo, even the Wilderness Edition is higher in price than the XTs without the Turbo..Im not a Subaru fan anymore, they are just for the money and Quality is gone. I live in Puerto Rico and have to add about $20k to those US MSRPs.

Interesting the difference in the models between there and USA. I think you have Japanese-built ones, while ours are built here. We certainly have more variants. I like the styling a bit better on the USA models, too. I bought an Outback Onyx XT with the turbo motor, and I am pleased with the powertrain performance. The turbo's low-end torque is very diesel-like, and gives that same relaxed low-RPM vibe. It is a good pairing with the CVT due to that. The price delta, if you factor in the additional equipment, is not that bad, probably $2000-2500 US. I traded in a 2014 Honda Accord V6 (the last great muscle car), and I have to say that the Star-tex is more comfortable than the leather in the Honda. All leathers are not equal, to be sure, and I have heard similar things about the non-Nappa Subie leathers. The main problem so far is that my wife likes the look of the (US-version) Outback, and I suspect it might become her car over time.

KZbin is international. AUD means Australian Dollars, and USD means United States of America's Dollars. In 2014 AUD $1 bought USD $1.05. They introduced Globalisation, Australia introduced free trade and Australia went off the gold standard, Ford, GM and Toyota took their manufacturing of cars overseas and now our AUD $1 buys USD 0.65 cents. It is critical to identify the currency used. Most people compare their currency to USD. So the price is AUD $52,000 is actually USD $33,660. In Australia there are additional charges, delivery fees, pre delivery checks, registration, compulsory third party insurance, finance costs including interest on the loan, and that would require a full compulsory insurance policy. It is deliberately confusing, power to the salesman.

If I buy Subaru, I want reliability. I'm not sure the turbo adds to that particular area of the vehicle. On the contrary. What is wrong with a naturally aspirated engine ? Nothing. It's relatively economic and quite reliable. Why would I bother ? well the car is quite slow without it, and the towing capability limited.
