Planting A Garden For The First Time Can Be Confusing. One of the more debated topics, even among seasoned gardeners, is whether to Direct Seed your crops, or use Starter Plants. As if planning out your garden in 2021 wasn’t hard enough!
I firmly believe that both planting methods have their place, and in this video I’ll show you how each is done. I’ll give you 3 advantages for each strategy, and why in that situation, it’s the best choice. Once you have all that information, you can then compare it to your own garden situation, and act accordingly. Works for almost every crop, every climate, every region of the world!

Very inspirational, I can't wait to start seedlings indoors. I have my garden all planned. But, I have this habit of changing things a bit when I actually work in the garden. Every year is an adventure.

We’ve had great success Starting beets in small cell flats as long as u don’t let them get too large. Starting them indoors allows us to either get two crops from our beet bed or have a 4-6 week old start we can plant after we pull our onions late July.

I have grown watermelon from seed up here in central WA it sometimes doesn't warm up until some time in June. I start my seeds in peat pots; not pellets unless you can find big pellets. The 4 inch peat pots worked for me. I planted three seeds in each pot. As the seedlings grew, I culled the weakest ones. I usually would end up with one plant in each pot. When the weather was warm enough so that the plants would not freeze to death, I dug holes in the garden and planted one pot per hole then leveled out the soil around the plant. As long as the soil is covering the peat pot and kept adequately watered, it will decompose. Of course, when I lived in Florida, I just toss watermelon rinds and seeds leftover from eating the fruit into the compost pile and the seeds would find the way to sprout and grow.

I’ve had amazing results transplanting peas. And you can get them out earlier because they sprout inside where it’s warm then can grow in the cool weather.

Hi Jeff, I get very frustrated with fungus gnats and damping off I try everything it just seems to be my nemesis. I think anything over a quarter inch in seed size is my new rule 😂😂 as tiny just doesn’t work for me. But a great video and love your in my area which really helps. Stay safe and stay gardening 🇨🇦🥬✌️🥕🧑‍🌾💐🌶

I've also run into this problem, fungus gnats & aphids. I assume you're starting plant indoors like I do. I've found that placing a few random sticky traps amidst my plants works wonders. I just brush my hand over my seedlings to make the bugs fly around & they get trapped by the glue.

last year I had trouble hardening off my tomatoes and peppers because they got very big because we got a very cold spell and I could not get them outside. I think it may be better to start them later and get them outside smaller
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Yup, its definitely those sort of fine tune adjustments that make harvests even better. What I do to really get them bulletproof is give the seedlings a 1) a fan for air circulation and 2) give them cool nights. That really sets them up to be moved outdoors. Also, after you make the plugs or the seedlings are 3 weeks old, replant them DEEP, all the way up to their first leaves in larger pots. This will REALLY give you the edge for hardening off. :-)

Another great vid! My Carolina reapers have sprouted using a heat mat set at 85f, a couple are just starting to grow their first set of true leaves. My basement is 65f, when do you suggest I take them off the mat, or turn down the heat? Cheers from the Kootenays!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent work! I would wait until the true leaves get a bit bigger...maybe even two sets of them. Alternatively, you can leave them on the heat pad and give them cool nights. Or, if you have a light setup that heats the plants while they are on, you might not even need the heat mat anymore. Keep me posted on how they do! :-)

Ha ha what a great problem to have!! For the REALLY good transplanters like tomatoes and peppers....I don't! I'll actually pull them apart and pot them up individually. They all live. Its actually the only way I seed them now..multi-seeded in each cell. Check out 3:37 of this video and it shows how I pull them apart: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIXalYePoZJqmM0
