Polystyrene is attracted to static charges. I wonder if you could have combed your hair then placed the comb over the aluminum and super fine polystyrene beads and have the beads stick to the comb. What you showed in the video looks almost identical to silver/aluminum "Testors" brand paint for hobbies. The copper oxide you show in the video is exactly what you want to prevent from forming when brazing copper refrigeration lines. You use an inert gas like nitrogen. The black scale will not form inside the pipe to clog up capillary tubes.

Then, towards the end the statement was made about having enough to burn through a lock and it dawned on me the ideas I had when watching movies such as Mission Impossible. You could add magnesium to the mixture to get a better burn or you could substitute the aluminium beads for aluminium powder since aluminium powder doesn't have a layer of skin protecting the metal within. Using a more powerful flame would also get you a better result. I remember that stuff from chemistry class back when I used to go to school, that was about 10 years ago.

If you ask me, the final test looked much better than most peoples' thermite videos, largely due to how little there was and how much slower it seemed to burn.

If thermite can produce molten iron, and still contains mostly iron, then I'm pretty sure that you could. Now go and make a thermite-powered plane engine and brag to ISIS about your accomplishment.

An odd concept, but maybe. If you contain thermite its explosive, but it would be stupid hard to get it to go off and Im fairly certain it wouldn't be worth the effort to figure out. You would also have to figure out how much power your getting per grain. Assuming the reaction would work with that little material.
@TheCsel

@hadmatter5714
@hadmatter5714 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think so because thermite does not release any gasses: the reaction is only between a metal and a metal oxide. Gunpowder works because when combusted the powder releases gasses which form a high pressure area behind the bullet.

You also could make copper (II) oxide by heating basic copper carbonate. I made that by reacting sodium carbonate (washing soda) with copper (II) sulfate (root killer for septic systems).

I wonder if the Brazil nut phenomenon could be used to separate the polystyrene out. Place the powder in a narrow vessel like a test tube, shake vigorously, and remove the beads that find their way to the top.

The beads are to produce the static electricity, which attracts the aluminum powder to the glass. It’s called triboelectricity.

You should try baking soda from ash. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and sodium carbonate is in hardwood ashes, so to and the "bi" to carbonate you need to pressurize it with CO2. Tricky part would be to get everything from the ashes separated.
