@@vinnythehandymanso I lost pilot. I went down read the instructions and followed them as written. What I didn't see in your video was if you held the pilot button down as you turned the valve to on. I get a pilot quickly. It looks just like yours did. Small and blue. But after I hold the pilot button down a couple minutes, as soon as I let up on it to prepare to turn the valve, the pilot dies. So is it likely my thermocouple or did I mess up by releasing the pilot button before I turned the valve. I thought that was the instructions but maybe I got it wrong. It says in the instructions to hold the button one minute. I held it a max of two. Do you think it's worth the effort to go try it again or just get. Thermocouple? Providing I didn't mess up when I released the pilot button before turning the valve to on 😅
@logginlocos9023
@logginlocos9023 7 ай бұрын
@@davidshumway9639You didn't mess up. You can release the pilot button after a minute or so and the pilot should stay lit. You can then turn the dial to the desired temperature setting. The thermocouple should be sending an electrical signal of around 33 milivolts DC current as the pilot flame heats up the thermocouple probe ( a minimum of 15 milivolts is required). The electrical signal keeps the selinoid open so the gas to the pilot and the burner valve can flow. The pilot then keeps that electrical charge going and the selinoid open. The thermostat then opens up the gas valve allowing the gas to flow to the burner and the pilot then ignites the burner. You most likely have a bad thermocouple. If not, then a bad selinoid. If the selinoid is bad, you will have to have a repair person to replace the regulator/valve assembly. Good luck.

Good video. I suspected a bad thermocouple was the cause of the burner not staying lit after ignition, so I used this video take apart the entire assembly and inspect. I found that the burner itself had accumulated a substantial pile of "dirt" (whatever it is that collects in the bottom of water heaters!), so I simply cleaned everything out and reassembled, figuring I would try this fix first, and replace the thermocouple as a next step if needed. Turns out, the unit fired up immediately and is back to making hot water. Thanks for posting!

It could be a lot of different things rather than needing a new thermocouple. Before you go replacing any parts you need to make sure those vent screens are clean and not blocked with dirt/lint. There will be one in the center under the burner assembly and one via wire mesh around the outside of the bottom of the water heater. Your next step should be removing the pilot assembly and cleaning the thermocouple, flame sensor and pilot tube with a small brass or steel brush.... even steel wool. DO NOT USE SANDPAPER!! The sand residue melts and turns to glass when red hot, therefore it will become a coating and ruin the parts not sending the proper signal. After everything is all clean you reassemble and try to light it again. You also are looking to make sure the thermocouple is glowing red/orange. If not you can play around with the height and angle in relationship to the flame by utilizing the notches and retaining clip. If you don't have a red/orange hot thermocouple after a minute or two of the pilot light burning IT'S NOT THE THERMOCUPLE and that is the issue. Also if you see any water or moisture around the bottom of the water heater that also causes it to go out. IF you see any water where it doesn't belong that means the tank has ruptured/rusted out or cracked and at that point you have condemned that unit for replacement. The water heater is NOW shot.....not anything else or any other way. It can't be fixed and you need a new one! I'm not a "handyman".....I'm a licensed Journeyman HVAC technician with 22 years experience! John

Very informative but, sorry to say that you missed a very important step that a home owner should do if he have to replace the thermocouple and removing the cover plate, these water heaters have air vents for air to move from the outside to the burner assembly, these vents which usually consist of small holes that by time they get covered with dirt and YOU HAVE TO VACUUM THE DIRT OUT TO CLEAR THE VENT HOLES if not the pilot will have a hard time to stay lit . Thank you.

Yeah my Richmond 40 gallon with the same looking valve as in this video was built in November 2019. The gas valve took a poo within a couple years. They replaced it for free. Now my heater just died again. The pilot lights but as soon as I lift the pilot button to turn it to on, the pilot dies. Held it a couple minutes. Not sure if it's the gas valve or thermocouple this time. Thing is only 3.5 years old (less than). My first heater that came with the house was a Rheem. I think. Nothing ever happened until it finally sprung a leak after year 16.

I have seen that on propane fittings. I’m sure you will be fine but definitely rare for residential gas lines. Maybe a master plumber can elaborate. Thanks for watching.

Get on your stomach and shine a light inside. You will see a support clip or brace where the burner slides into. Some models have different brackets. Still very easy you just need to look inside. Let me know if that worked. Thanks for watching.

If you have that gas valve and the pilot goes out try removing that white thing between where you screw the thermocouple into the valve before replacing the thermocouple. These valves are faulty, and that's the fault most of the time lol. So irritating I have to replace another gas valve lol.

Those two wires go to a thermal fuse that can not be reset. Rheem will warranty the gas valve but give you the same pos back. I wish Rheem was more transparent about the problem being that I’ve probably replaced nearly 50 of those valves in the last two years alone or better yet come up with a solution that works.

NEVER, EVER, use Teflon tape on gas fittings. You may think you're being careful to not put the tape too close to the edge, but 2 facts remain. 1). Its unnecessary 2). The potential for a small piece of Teflon tape to come-off, and stick to the valve seat is still there. This will hang the valve open. We don't want gas leaks.......do we? NEVER use Teflon tape on gas fittings. The same for Petroleum type "gas". NEVER on Carburetor, or any other fuel fittings.........same reason.

Tony, Appreciate the time you took to point out potential problems. of course we don’t want potential gas leaks. Just my personal experience’s but I have had some gas leaks on fittings that didn’t have gas rated Teflon. That’s why I’m so careful BUT APPLIED very carefully as a potential backup and gas leaks went away. To not use Teflon period is fine to. I totally agree with you. To Viewers reading this YOU DO NOT NEED to use Teflon tape. -I believe I was careful in the application and made note of it. I do appreciate your experience and knowledge on this topic. Tony, thanks for taking the time to watch and post.

thanks mate! some other videos were suggesting the sensor above the thermocouple (white thing) that connects it to the gas valve is often the problem also. For example here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZyyeJuArLaHopo How can I tell whether its that sensor that is the problem, and not the thermocouple you suggest replacing?
