I do not know how to thank you, my water heater thermocouple died in the morning but was able to take a luke warm shower. Thanks to the climate today in Chicago, saved by the bell. Watched your video and Homedepot had the part. Replacing was a task as I had to move the dryer and washing machine out of the way and then replaced the part. After and hr was able to get hot water. Hadn't needed to change a thermocouple in probably 40 years ,so when my hot water heater pilot light failed to stay on, I suspected that the thermocouple was bad. Since it had been so long since I had changed one, I used your video as a refresher course. Went to Lowes, got a thermo couple and within 15 or twenty minutes I was up and running again. The only trouble I ran into was that the grommet had hardened and broke apart while I was extracting the tube. After I had gotten it back in place as good as I could, I applied some high heat silicon gasket maker and the hole was sealed. Thanks again for doing this video. I am sur it has saved a lot of people a lot of money.

I had one plumber come to the house and tell me I had to get the part from the manufacturer and then he'd put it in for me for $270, if that was even the problem. He gave me quotes for all sorts of additional things up to replacing the water heater for $2200. He said it depended on what I wanted to do. I told him I just wanted hot water in the house. Another plumber I only spoke to said that the part would cost $200 and the labor would be $200. I found your video and was inspired. I bought the part for $7.95 and installed it myself! I'm sure it took me longer than it would have taken a plumber but I saved at least $300, according to their estimates. Thank you!

This video was very helpful. I was somewhat scared to do this myself since I was afraid to deal with gas. I ended up hiring a plumber and it took the plumber about 20 mins to replace the thermocouple. The plumber did almost exactly the same as described in this video. After seeing this video and what the plumber did, I will definitely change the thermocouple myself in the future.

Thanks for explaining what the parts do & why we push the button for a minute, etc. Before it felt like - Simon Says that's why. I got my thermocouple replaced, but the heater kept turning off. I see it has to do with the placement of the wires & tubes. The copper one was on the outside & I was mashing it trying to get the cover on & probably changed the placement of the tip next to the pilot. Your video showed me how to carefully unhook, reroute & hook the thermocouple in a better place, out of the way of the cover. I'm waiting now to see of the burner will stay on.

Thank you for the reminder, I had the re-light process down for a while after having a finicky thermocouple the past few years, and forgot about needing to give the pilot a good 2-3 minutes to heat up before turning the knob back over to "On". Looks like I probably need to do some more thorough maintenance and think about replacing it somewhat soon.

Hi, I want to say thank you so much for your super straight-forward directions!!! I had trouble pulling the old tc out of its seat and actually took it w/ new to hardware shop and Steve got it out for me, however I felt he freed the igniter tube not the to. So at home I gave it another try and it separated well so I put it all back together and it was easy peasy from their until time to light the pilot which on my pro-max was a manual light.

Hi, 1st Thanks for the great explanations. My issue was of my own making. I shut off the gas to drain the tank to get the sediment out and now the sparker won't fire. WIll removing the unit and cleaning it do any good? The spark generator is part of the pilot/gas control box, it sits on top.

Hi, If the pilot light does not stay on, you would change the thermocouple. If the burner goes on and then goes out, it could be the heat link. This is a new safety device on hot water tanks.

Very good explanation. I am glad you called it a water heater. Not like some of the others on here calling it a" hot water heater". No, it is a "cold water heater", that is why it is a "water heater:" Too funny.

Hi, Did you remove the burner and knock off any build up. Sometimes rust and debris can clog the burner. Also, on some new hot water tanks there is a new safety. It is called a heat link. If it is bad, you need to replace it. Let me know if that helps.

Great help. I was able to do this for $11 from Home Depot. After putting everything back together I was able to light the pilot light with no problem. I turned the gas control valve to "ON" and then raised the temperature setting from lowest up to my marked, normal setting. Nothing happened. I thought maybe there is a lag in the response. I waited a long time and finally turned the setting all the way to high. When I did that the burner unit came to life with a strong flame. Not sure if the turning it to high was a normal action that needed to happen or if it was simply a coincidence, but all is good now. Thanks for the info.

Hi, I would unscrew the nuts from the pilot tube and the burner tube and make sure that you push the tubes up firmly into the gas control as you retighten the nuts. Most companies do not want any teflon products on gas lines going to a gas control. Don't use silicone, it should seal by seating into the fitting. I would try to retighten and then retest. Do not overtighten. If it still leaks let me know.

Hi, Yes, if you have access to the pilot, you can use a lighter or match if the igniter didn't work.

I also have a suspected thermocouple issue on a GE SmartWater SmartShield 50-Gal water heater. Several people have asked, but I haven't seen an answer where after the four screws are removed - the gasket seal is so tight that it's apparently pried away from the heater. It says on the unit that if the gasket is removed - it must me replaced. Is that your experience? The unit is 9-years old.

I finally was able to get the chamber open. I replaced the thermocoupler and installed it as your video instructed. Pilot light came on and when I switched the knob to ON,it started up but only stayed lit for about 15 min. pilot light still on but wont FLARE up. Still no hot water. Could the gas control knob be needing to be replaced?

I just did this this morning to restore hot water in my house. My old, non-functional thermocouple had a reverse thread (left hand thread) securing nut, so I bought a universal thermocouple from Home Depot, then I used a hacksaw to cut a line wide enough to allow the new thermocouple wire to fit into the old nut. My symptoms were: Pilot would light and stay on after holding the reset button for thirty seconds, but after the main burner was on for sixty seconds or so, it would shut off. The pilot would go out as well.

Wow, it took me about 45 minutes. My burner is more of a donut then a plate but everything went great. I just followed the steps. These videos are a great reference. I probably saved a couple of hundred dollars by not calling a plumber!

Hi, Some tanks have a gasket that can stick it in place. You should be able to pull it free. What is the make of your heater?

Great Video, took me about an hour to disassemble and then put in the new thermocouple. I got one that fits all water heaters at Home Depot for $13. Mine is a GE 50 gallon.

@glock norris, there might be two more screws either above or below the ones you took out already. I have a newer unit that looked like I only needed to remove two but had to do all four. Also I was unable to remove the whole burner but it came out enough that I was still able to change it with no problem. Thanks for the vid hardwarehelper, job took about 10min tops!!

all gas water heaters manufactured after 2003 are flame vapor ignition resistant. all these newer gas water heaters need preventive maintenance. there are a lot of good videos explaining how to fix your water heater. there are very few videos explaining why they broke in the first place. the most common cause of water heater failure is not enough air for drafting. the number 1 reason for pilot failure is a dirty intake screen ( flame arrestor). when the intake screen gets dirty and they all do. the drafting slows down and heat builds up in the burner area. the thermo limit opens and the pilot goes out. keeping the intake screen clean is a must to prevent pilot failure. tightspot vacuum brush is a great tool design for this purpose

I saw that clip inside but it had no heat link in there. THAT has got to be my problem. Where would I buy this? Is it easy to find a replacement? Are they generic like the thermocouple? Also, thanks so much, you're very helpful to everyone!

Hi, I was not aware of a conversion kit, so I also my local rep for Rheem and they don't have a kit to add an igniter to a tank that didn't come with one. He suggested calling your manufacturer. Let me know if you find one. I will call a couple plumbers and send you the info if they have one.

Make sure the tip of the themocouple is in the flame of the pilot. It needs to touch the flame. You may have to push it up further.

For heaters which don’t heat well, is replacing a thermocouple a reasonable fix? Or is that a different problem. Thank you for the video.

Ok last question we did get the thermocouple changed out and everything was working fine then I sprayed the soapy water on the three nuts and two of them had bubbles and we tightened a little more but to scared to do to much still have a few bubbles coming out. My friend gave me some thread seal tape, would that be the best to use or another friend said something about sealing with silicone. Which is best if any? Thanks again

The water in the tank may still be too hot. Turn on the hot water on one of your faucets for a few minutes. Turn the thermostat down, then turn it back up to hot. Make sure the control knob is turned to "on".

I did all your steps on my Richmond trailerhome 2011 model though the bottom is rusting. I have the peizo ignite switch and my orange heat groment was falling apart so I played small strips of gorilla tape around the groment. But your spot on about everything. I smelled the tape burning so I had to take a long nose pliers to remove the tape and wipe the glue backing from the tape and I believe it burned off. now no burning smell but man was it hot when I tried to peel the tape from around the groment with my fingers. Am I spelling groment wrong? I subscribed because the thermal coupler was like 12 bucks and your easy instruction priceless
