Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a frequently used technique in thermal analysis. Its main use is to characterize materials by measuring change in their mass as a function of temperature or time. The TGA measurements are used mainly to determine the materials composition, thermal stabilities, oxidative stabilities, product lifetimes, decomposition rate, filler content, moisture and volatiles content, and effects of reactive atmospheres on materials.

Do you have a video teaching to calculate the grafting efficiency of a polymer on nanoparticles by TGA ?

Hi, we do not have a video but you can measure the graft density by following steps. (A) Generate TGA plot of pure polymer to find the degradation temperature. (B) At similar experimental condition, test the grafted nanoparticle. (C) If polymer is grafted on the nanoparticle, so weight loss at polymer degradation temperature indicate fractional graft density. (D) make sure to thoroughly wash grafted sample before the test.

how to perform tga analysis for solid material like polymer reinforced composite......whether we kept as in solid cube or we should make powder of that solid. whether in both form it will give correct result

To perform TGA of a composite, you can take 8-10mg of small pieces of extruded strand or lump. Simply cut or break the material into small pieces.

For characterization of polymer/plastic commonly used techniques are Thermal: DSC, TGA, DMA and TMA Mechanical: tensile/flexural tester, impact tester (Izod/Charpy) Morphology: light microscopy, electron microscopy (SEM, TEM) Electrical: two/four probe electrical conductivity test Rheology: parallel plate rheometer, capillary rheometer, cone and plate rheometer, and melt flow index
