how you reading the temperature at which it opens? where is the thermometer?

You see the black plug directly below the thermostat? That is the coolant temperature sensor, just plug it in and it tells ecu current temperature

I had this very basic question for many years. Hope someone can answer. What if there is no water in radiator or system. Will it still sense or read temperature.

If you put weeker springs on a thermostat would open up with less heat or faster? How would I design one to open with less heat? I'm doing an experiment thst is not automotive related?

The spring only controls the return of the thermostat to the original closed position. There was a wax encased inside a cylinder with a piston that once the wax reaches temperature, it expands and pushes the rod out under certain temperatures. usually between 40 to 60°C

AFAIK there’s wax in a little compartment and it has special thermic properties and when it’s heated it expands more that other materials that pushes a small piston out and that movement then presses the thermostat valve back to open up.
