I think it's that artistry (especially their own lyrics) that makes them unique/great. On their own they are mediocre (ast best) musicians, but together they stand in their strengths and magic happens. I especially love the Mick Taylor years, his actual musicianship elevated the sound in the early 70s. His Blues infused with Latin influences like the solo on Can't you hear me knocking, Time Waits for No one. It added the zest on an already nice dish.
