Awesome. With the right knowledge, it is amazing how much can be accomplished with simple tools.

I do the same thing. I made a 2.2 & a 3.3 ohm resistor for testing airbag systems out of a piece of hookup wire, a resistor, 2 floral pins & heatshrink. Solder it all up, done. All up cost nearly nothing. The sharp pins make back probing easy & the flexibility of the hookup wire means the tool will last forever

Great video, also the shorting bar can be used to validate that you have high resistance in the circuit.

What a great video. Did this before with vw crafter. Was plug on module. Very rarely do airbags fail. Great informative video that I've learned from . I will be sure to do this. Guys like you is how I've learned and be where I am today so thanks again 👍

This was a really great video. I have an airbag issue with my Outback, unfortunately it is with the passenger side so it's not as easy to get to as the steering wheel unit. But when I do get around to tearing into it I have saved this video so I can do some testing.

This is how I was taught to test air bags. Instead of stabilant22 or similar we have been using heated windshield repair kit stuff which has a lot of silver. Obviously you have to be more careful with that not to short the circuit but it has been flawless with no comebacks.

Very valuable test. I'm glad you showed the stabliant 22 also. The most powerful diagnostic tests are when you can substitute a known value. Bypass testing is the greatest. Super effective and straightforward. The first time i ever used this test was a honda prelude. It came with a shorting bar dummy plug. It was attached to the air bag next to the connector. This is preobd, but they wanted you to short the connection and check for the code to change to shorted ckt.

I came here to find out how to check what each airbags resistance is for my BMW 330cic. I’m new to BMW and was not sure if they be the same ohm as my GM and Nissan stuff. I’m looking to remove them and add a resistor and keep the dash light off. I have the OTOFIX it’s a great scanner and a great way to check the airbag ohm size per bag!!

15:09 hold the phone. 😂 That tells you the problem is after the crimp on the clock spring connector. It will be the clock spring at least 99% of the time but it could be pin fitment or corrosion in the connector. Edit: I commented too soon; you covered it at 18:09.

Thanks for another great video guys. A question if i may? What would be your approach to this fault if the SRS ECU didnt provide the resistance PIDs? You would think that all modern ECUs do show this information however the brand i work on, those resistançe readings are not provided (even 2023 models), thanks
@theroyaltyautoservice
@theroyaltyautoservice Жыл бұрын
Very common problem, especially on older vehicles. First, document your code, then clear it. Cycle the key and see if it returns. If it does, then it is a hard fault. Find the ciciut and install the resistor. Clear the code and cycle the key. If the code is gone, then you've found your problem. Cycle the key multiple times just to be sure. Hth.

@ampe83
@ampe83 Жыл бұрын
A faster diagnosis of the clock spring is to graph the resistance while turning the steering wheel. After your tests you could also do a pin drag test on the connector to the clock spring The resistance is stored in a 16 bit register that can have a maximum value of 65535 milliohm, that gets rounded of to 65,54 ohm on open circuit. On Generac liquid cooled generators they use a 4 to 20ma loop for sensors. We carry a 1 k ohm resistor to jump out failed sensors for troubleshooting. Its helps to see the Raw value vs processed value with a known good value. Sometimes if its an emergency and a low coolant level sensor has failed its nice to be able to jump out the sensor to keep the unit working until we can get a sensor.

An excellent example of how to prove your circuit integrity before firing the part’s cannon. Makes you wish the manufacturer would require the experts to take a fully assembled vehicle and follow their own instructions to see how ridiculous the procedure can become. At the stealership the customer will likely be charged for the book time to follow the tree and the mechanic will gladly take the time but reach the same conclusion as you performing the same work around using common sense.

Many times other functions on the wheel also will not work. SRS light and cruise won’t work or radio functions not working then a clock spring is the most common fault. Simple logic wins out every time.

I find it mind blowing how humans can try to a solve a problem only to create additional ones. Let’s get rid of electronic gadgetry, distracting devices, actually teach people how to drive, make continuous driving education and testing mandatory, and spend all the time saved not having to do this bs on things we enjoy. The definition and/or understanding of ‘intelligence’ is way off the mark. 🤦‍♂️

It does not look resistance, that is wrong information. It feed reference voltage and expect certain voltages back. It calculates the resistance by voltages values. Even your multimeter does not see resistance, it is all voltages. You should be professional and share the professional information. Learn OHM law! Buy cheap IPA and it works too. No need something very expensive
