He is probably my favorite author of all time, I keep rereading his monographs because the way he writes is just brilliant. I’ve read the entire corpus of the major historians of antiquity (livy, tacitus, herodotus, xenophon, thucydides, arriam, etc.) and I find Sallust to be the most enjoyable and thought provoking BY FAR. And that’s just from the very brief writings of his. Criminally underrated in the modern times

they say that when Gaius Sallustius Crispus came across a statue of Gaius Livius Salinator, Consul 219 and 207 BCE, he was so overcome with emotions over not being able to match the latter’s achievements that he broke down and wept 😑

later, Quintus Dellius was taken to see the tomb of Sallinator, and asked if he wanted to see the tombs of other minor republican figures, but replied "I came to see a 2x consul, not a row of corpses"

It would be good if there was a visual aid for relevant actors during the First Triumvirate and Caesar's civil wars, showing families, political alignments and so on

you'd think the corruption involved in the Jugurthine war would be a touchy subject for someone with Sallust's past.

Africa Nova may not have been a proconsular province before Augustus, who merged it with Africa Vetus during a reorganization.
