You should go up w two halyards. One under load and the other just taking up slack, but braked.

In light of the age of the boat, the overall condition of the halyard, replacing it is a temp solution as the cover will be damaged again. Rope cover just doesn't break by itself. There is a chafe point somewhere which should be relatively easy work out where aprox where the halyard is being damaged. This could be a back of a pop rivet, stay tang or exit slot. I would not go offshore until this is resolved...shit happens at the worst time and when you want to reef you cant...damage to sail...and so on. I've done Newport to Ft.Lauderdale and it can be pretty narley. Good luck.

Prefect weather and flat as a pancake, the best time to learn to go up....Sooner or later it might only be you....Challenge yourself, trust me I was scare to death, but the more I learned, the more I realized that whenever an emergency happen, I was able to take care of it too.. Not meant to be criticism, just a friendly push... :)

Hey really enjoying your videos... again! I got hooked on Catamarans watching Honeymoon. I’ve been a powerboat guy for many years but in my 20’s I had a 22ft Catalina. My wife and I plan to get out first cat within the next year. Thanks for the inspiration. All the best with the new Outremer!

Awesome videos and lovely people. I noted that the attachment of the old vs. new halyard at the top of the mast is different. The old one appears to be attached with a bowline(??), whereas the new one looks like the halyard was spliced into a loop (with potentially the line's core missing (??) in the looped section - if this is true, then is new attachment and halyard able to withstand the same load as the old halyard?). Relative to all that your family are accomplishing, I am a complete novice and am asking the question so that I can learn or maybe point out something that you were unaware of (which I highly doubt as you are all obviously extremely capable human beings).
@TheSailingFamily4 жыл бұрын
No, you are not wrong. This was a temporary fix until we could get a new halyard made with a splice. We have since replaced the line. Good spotting!

@@TheSailingFamily Thank you for your reply. Very much appreciated. So, the red/white line with a splice at the point of attachment to the top of the mast is the permanent fix for your main halyard? Whereas, the blue/brown line with a bowline knot at the point of attachment to the top of the mast was a temporary fix? Have I understood this correctly? Your travels with your young family are so inspirational. Thank you for sharing.
