It's the travel distance.. Once you get used to those thin keyboards, MX keys, laptop keys, etc. Normal keyboards just have way too long of a travel.
@lornelorne57275 ай бұрын
You're not supposed to bottom-out the keys though... The extra travel room on a normal keyboard gives you a buffer space for softer cushioning, instead of just slamming down to a solid bottom like you're probably doing on a low profile keyboard.
@rajeshrs14964 ай бұрын
@@lornelorne5727 That is of course what you would do with a mechanical keyboard but every keyboard is designed a little differently and you have the variation of the human hand, as well, resulting in thin, low travel being the best option. Awkward placement and high travel are bad enough but nothing gets people down like low WPM

Is the MX mechanical the same in terms of travel distance?
@derekjc777Ай бұрын
You would think so. But the K3 is a low profile keyboard with reduced travel distance. It might be the way the key switches behave. Compared to butterfly switches or chiclet switches, mechanical keys behave very differently and have a massive variety of behaviour, starting with tactile/linear and then a seemingly infinite set of subdivisions beneath them.

You managed to put into words exactly what I've been feeling with my keychron k3 pro. I feel like my typing accuracy is horrible I constantly fat finger other keys and it's so slow. Every time I just use my MacBook Pro keyboard instead it feels like I'm flying away on my keys. I just put my keychron up for sale instantly after watching this. I also felt like it was just a learning curve, but now I've had it for over 1 year and I still struggle. I think I might just go back to buying a Magic Keyboard, now that I found out you can change the fn key to act like CTRL.. I've always hated that placement because my head is hardwired to having CTRL in the left corner.. Awesome to have fingerprint scanner on it as well. Thanks for this review!

Same here. Poor typing accuracy. I'm really fast at typing, but my K5 Max makes me stop and think if I'm starting to get old. Switch back to old cheap keyboard and and everything back to perfect. Maybe it just a fancy keyboard for slow typing.

My scenario is exactly same, I had a good experience with apple magic keyboard and I wanted to connect with multiple devices so purchased mx keys and it worked so well then I broke it. After lot of youtube videos and pouring good reviews, I tried keychron k8 pro and nuphy air 75. They are good but I get typos, and a lot of connectivity issues, k8 pro's height is an issue to me, It cannot be used without a palm rest. I dint like either of these keyboards. I was trying to buy mx mechanical keyboard for the last few months. But, every review in internet makes me double think that decision. Your video gave me the confidence to purchase it and my typing experience is back to normal. I am subscribing to your channel as a token of appreciation :) Keep doing this!
@JottaaHD Жыл бұрын
Hey! Did you end up buying it? If so, how has it been? I'm kind of on the same boat, I use an apple magic keyboard for work and its great, small, light and I'm faster and make less mistakes on it. For my gaming PC I have a mechanical keyboard with cherry MX browns but I wanted to get a single keyboard for both PCs and was torn on what to get because the mechanical gives me fatigue after a while, and the height isn't desirable, and the apple magic keyboard is great but for gaming not so much and it can't even be paired to more than one device.

I had a similar experience with the K3, I believe my issue was the fact that the rows of keys are stepped like a staircase on the K3 (angled stems). I've got a NuPhy Air75 V2 now, and I type much faster on it. All of the keycap top surfaces are in plane. This seems to be the case with the MX Keys Mechanical. I'm so glad to find this video because this is exactly how I feel. I am in fact using a Keychron K3 right now. I LOVE how it feels to type here, so satisfying, so nice to use, but it gives me so much typo and lowers my speed not by much but just enough to be annoying. It's also very easy to nudge and the bloody key will type whatever it is I slightly nudged. I think that's my main problem? Because like you said, similarly layout small keyboards work well with me, like the ones on Apple products, but somehow they don't easily click on random key just because I slightly nudge it. Honestly, shame that this keyboard has that nudge-and-typo thing. I really want to like it, I bought this like a couple years ago, but it hasn't worked all that well with me and I'm looking for an alternative for fast typing. Thank you for the MX Keys recs, I'll look it up :)

Thanks for the insight. I've been using the MX Mechanical at work for a year now and recently purchased the K5 Pro as a cheaper alternative for home use. Both have brown switches. I haven't noticed reduced typing speed nor a delay in waking up the K5 pro after it has been asleep. No issues with the Bluetooth either. Two reasons I did not purchase the MX Mechanical for personal use: 1) I don't want to download another Logitech app - I wish it could be added to the GHUB as I'm already using a G502 Hero. 2) It's not as customizable. I'd like the option to change the key caps. Based on others experience in changing the key caps on the MX Mechanical, they run into a size issue where the third party space bar doesn't fit. Otherwise, I love the MX Mechanical.

I don't have the K3, because I don't like low-profile keyboards, but I have the K2 and the K8. I haven't judged my speed vs. other keyboards, but it seems to be fast enough. Probably has something to do with the travel distance. The travel distance for those apple keyboards is ~1mm. The travel distance for any of the switches that come with the K3 is ~3mm(with ~1.7 pre-travel before the switch activates). However, the MX Keys uses the same switches as the K3, so that can't be the issue. My guess is that Samuel was much faster on the MX Keys because it's flatter than the spherical key key profile on the K3.
@dylanneild2580 Жыл бұрын
@@TheStoic84 I think it's the width. The K3 has an extra line of keys along the right edge (Page up/down/home/end, etc). This makes all the keys a little more narrowly spaced. If I reflexively reached for the "P" key, I'd most often just hit the space between "P" and "[" because of muscle memory. The actual travel distance of the K3 wasn't bothering me at all; I was just making so many errors on it that it destroyed my flow completely.

I went from a low profile apple magic keyboard to a keychron K8, a real chunky keyboard with switches that have 4mm of travel, and... yeah... it took a while to get adjusted to it. I like the keychron, as someone who works in it having a keyboard that’s portable with light switches is a dream. I can’t deal with laptop keyboards mainly for the fact I can never tell if I actually pressed a button or not, the keychron gives enough feedback even with the brown switches (which I prefer because they are so light). The ghost typing issue people are getting can be an issue but it’s more how you rest your hands rather than the keyboard itself. For someone who is mostly stationary I would say get something better but for someone who constantly changes work environments and just wants to have an efficient typing tool this keyboard is great. This all comes down to your own experience and your own preferences tho. Get what you can do do what you need to do and get what feels exciting or nice to type on!

Nice review, have a sub. I actually quite like this keyboard - but as a programmer my requirements are for precision and a much heavier reliance on things like tabs and symbols rather than speed so it suits me fine. I'm also a gamer so I have an inherent distrust of anything wireless, so running it over bluetooth never even ocurred to me. Finally, as a Brit our options are much more limited with keyboards as we have our own special layout and I cant unprogram 30 years of expecting the return key to be double height and using a US layout drove me absolutely mental. I really really like the Apple keyboard a lot, but it's always a bit off if you aren''t using a Mac - and i'm primarily Windows or Linux. Have tried the even smaller keyboards, but end up wanting to smash them against the wall as function keys and arrow keys are a cut too far and completely essential for writing code unless you are some kind of nutcase that does everything in Vim Edit: One big downside for me that it's really difficult to source Low Profile keycaps, especially in a UK layout. The ones included aren't bad but feel a bit silky and would prefer some nicer ones with a bit more texture to them and in a couple of extra colours so I could pick out important keys for like WASD and Blender in a different tone as am not a touch typer and visual cues help my fingers land on the right place.
