PJ and myself build the wheel for each match. We will never put a known strength on the wheel for a competitor if they don't request it. Now, if they are secretly studying a category or haven't revealed a strength and it ends up on the wheel then it's outside of our control.

I'd say building the wheel with the competitors in mind is a huge mistake. The wheel slices should be random.

@@maatimoobi8133 But that's the luck of the draw and it's the same for all competitors. It's poor form to let somebody directly influence the difficulty level for the players. There are subconscious biases that exist and that level of subjectivity isn't good. Especially when you consider that certain players have more strengths than other players. Having more strengths should work in your favor, but instead those strengths are apparently stripped from the wheel. That's incredibly unfair to those players.

When building the wheel we look to have it as balanced as possible which usually includes: 2 strengths for both sides, patreon slices, at least 1 actor, at least 1 actress, at least 1 director, a decade, then a mix of your core genres and sub genres.

I think a "Wheel reveal" the day before the match would be awesome for conversation and for player prep. Would add a nice element to the game. Also, wheel slices should be 100% random after the player's choices are decided. There shouldn't be any room for subjectivity when building the wheel.

I respect your decision. I am curious why innergeekdom movies wouldnt just move in to existing categories. If you get fantasy scifi it might have some comic book or Harry Potter questions. If you get 80s it might have superman 234 or starwars 56. The issue isn't the questions, it about the full category

Didn't think of that angle but you're not wrong. The only issue I could see is a Fantasy/Sci-Fi category could potentially ONLY be Star Wars, Harry Potter, MCU, etc. without any questions that dig further into the genre. Questions about 2001: A Space Odyssey, Lifeforce, Beastmaster, etc.... If they can somehow cool it with the same twenty (not an accurate number) IG movies, I think mixing them into their respective genres would be a good idea.

OK, so, WOW!! AMAZING show! Turns out Corona is unexpectedly awesome for Backstage I guess, 'cus this was HOT FIRE today. Everyone was phenomenal, A*, top of their game (even if Ben does basically blend with his wall. As a fellow deathly-pale person who's Irish skin sizzles at the thought of prolonged exposure, I empathise) Also - dear God I just love Kaiser. Quality entertainment just seeing him there...he's one of a kind in the most obnoxiously best way.

My personal take - I think allowing an 'Innergeekdom' slice on the wheel is a fair compromise. I also think it's fair for any innergeekdom category to be asked during R1 and R3 but allowing 2 separate categories in the wheel round is an unfair advantage. It would be like Bateman asking for movie release dates for 2000s only (which I would argue is tougher because a lot more movies were released in the 2000s than all innergeekdom categories combined). (edited to add: for this season. If players are given fair warning before next season, then it's on them to study). I also agree with Bateman that players and managers should be given due notice prior to implementing any rule change. It's my inner lawyer that cringes every time a change is made on the fly and the players have to find out by asking about it (which is great if they happen to ask about it lol) instead of everyone finding out at the same time. Btw, I'm so glad you guys took the time to make this show happen today. It's much needed entertainment during all of this isolation taking place. Thank you Kristian, John and Ben!

So nice having Kristian on to finally put players in their place and give the writers the credit they deserve. Sick of players just bitching and moaning and making this game so complicated and saying it needs to evolve and get better and just completely picking it apart. You rarely ever hear them blame themselves, but rather blame the writers or the managers. Just throwing this out there: Have something called Schmoedown Pop Quiz (or there may be a better name for it). Every faction is entered into one Pop Quiz each season. Two factions are named at random at a specified time and a player from each competing faction is chosen at random to play each other with only a week to prepare. If the random player chosen can't play only the manager can take their spot or they must forfeit. 5 rounds. Random wheel slices (including Spinners/Opponents. Meaning you could theoretically have an opponent's choice with no spinner's choice on the wheel... maybe not?) The winner's faction gets X amount of points for their faction and the loser loses X amount of points. Again, just an idea but the intent is to throw a wrench into how the factions gain points throughout the season. Imagine the Finstock Exchange being ahead at the end of the season only to have the second place take the lead because Finstock's worst player had to play The Den's best. I think it would also incentivize managers to locate and strengthen their weakest link within their faction. What say you?

If I'm a manager and I know a Pop Quiz is about to be announced, for all I know my worst player could be picked to play Rocha, Murrell, Oyama, Bibbs etc. and the faction could lose however many points as a result. I can't speak for other managers but I would spend the time to make sure my entire faction is as solid as I can make it so we don't lose the points we earned throughout the year.

I think it would be fair to have a slice "Marvel & DC", one slice for "Wizards and Fantasy" (Harry Potter, LotR, etc.), one slice for "Space Adventures" (Star Wars, Star Trek), and so on... Generally speaking, I am against having all Innergeekdom categories translate 1 for 1 into singles, but I think if you combine 2 or 3 IG categories into one wheel slice, there isn't much of a problem.

Honestly my thoughts on Innergeekdom slices was only be able to put one on the wheel and maybe making a rule for what the minimum number of movies a category needs to be in Singles/Team leagues( this would probably have to be down the line and obviously might eliminate other categories as well). In terms of strengths/weaknesses, maybe just say that if a player has picked a slice twice in the past one/two seasons, it will never appear on the "random" slices for them in a game. Twice to prevent gaming of the system (picking a slightly weaker category in an early tournament game as defence for later rounds, for instance).

I think it's silly for anyone to think any of the movies in the IG division shouldn't be involved in the Singles/Teams division in the first place. I think it was completely fair to allow people to choose one or two IG slices for singles/teams matches. They're movies, this is the Movie Trivia Schmoedown. No movies should be excluded. So I'd prefer them be able to choose specific slices rather than one all encompassing one but Kristian knows what he's doing. As for the difficulty factor? Absolutely no point in talking about it other than the few times one seems legitimately out of place regardless of who's playing. Otherwise a 1 pointer for one person is a 5 pointer for another and that's just how it's going to work and how it always has worked so these players have to accept the game they're choosing to play and move on.

TLDR: this geekdom change seems to be a bigger advantage for geekdom players than each of them being their own slices. The big thing this intergeekdom wedge change does. is it makes it more dangerous for a geekdom player giving the wedge to a none geekdom player who has spun opponents. Imagine if the family had spin opponents choice against korruption and korruption gave them dceu. The family would have done well with those questions because they were fairly easy with big movies a lot of people know about. They may have missed one or two and given korruption steals but they would have done well. Now imagine its just a geekdom slice mike could still run it but I feel like the family would have a harder time with trek and middle earth in that slice. If i was in a Match and someone gave me mcu or star was I would do well if they gave me geekdom as a whole trek and potter could crush me. The change is fine. I prefer it being multiple slices because they are all movies. That is just my opinion I'll be fine with whatever rules are out there I just love this game.

Now you might at least get 2 questions right while you would have gotten 0 in Harry Potter but all 4 in Star Wars meaning it evens out and that is assuming the other player doesn’t know what IG category is your weakness and picks that on purpose. It’s definitely not a larger advantage for IG players, 33% less chance to get something IG related and it will be on the wheel less I don’t get how that would be better in any way

As you said Drew and Drew would have a harder time with middle earth than Dc for example then what if someone picked middle earth tagainst them, they would be completely destroyed (assuming they’re bad at it as you say) with an IG slice however they would probably never get completely rekt as it’s from multiple franchises and they would know at least some

Love mitigating IG to one slice. Singles and Teams shouldn't be a defacto IG match. If it goes back to what it was then that's the game and players need to adjust accordingly. I also stand by Kalinowski not being a top tier player without using IG slices as a crutch. His overall movie knowledge, from what I've seen is slightly above average at best. If he studies and proves me wrong, I'm happy to eat crow. Love, love, LOOOOOVE the revolving door of players during this episode. I know this was done because of circumstances out of their control but this episode was a happy accident that Backstage should run with in the future.

I don't worry too much about rules & fairness. The only RULES I care about are the ones posted in front of Round 1, 2, & 3. This extra wheel slice controversy makes no difference to me. Too much made about fairness. Movies are movies, that's it. Unless Kristian decides to air the choosing of the wheel slices for added dramatics, I'm not sure we need to care about it tbh. I trust Kristian and will always trust Kristian in this regard. Though, a legitimate, written constitution of the Movie Trivia Schmoedown is clearly the next step in the evolution of this league as players really care about the competition.
