We tend to imagine that we can only become addicted to a few sorts of things. But real addiction is about using something, anything, to keep our real emotions, fears and hopes at bay. There are many more addicts among us than we think.

FURTHER READING
“We operate with some stock images of the addict: a person with a heroin needle in a park, or who nurses a bottle of gin in a paper bag at nine in the morning or who sneaks off at every opportunity to light up another cylinder of marijuana.
However dramatic and tragic such cases of addiction might be, they are simultaneously hugely reassuring to most of us - because they locate the addict far from ordinary experience, somewhere off-stage, in the land of semi-criminality and outright breakdown…”

I agree with the first 80% wholeheartedly. But is philosophy an answer? I think not. Addiction to theoretical, esoteric, often bogus philosophical problems is poison. We need mindfulness that is closer to life and reality.

I think we develop addictions because at times we struggle so desperately to express ourselves, that we eventually lose hope. And adopt various habits, as cheap substitutes for the sense of fulfilment we were denied.

Rumination is most often understood as unproductive kind of thinking that is common in people who are depressed -- obsessive thoughts of guilt, regret and anger over things that one cannot change. Though according to the dictionary, the word _can_ be used to mean "contemplation" and "thoughtfulness", today, (especially in professional literature) it is most frequently used to mean the negative kind of thinking. Here is a typical example from scientific literature: "Mindfulness represents an attribute of consciousness involving an intentional focus on the present moment experience with a non-judgmental attitude. Due to this quality, it attenuates *rumination*, a maladaptive way of coping with negative mood characterized by a continuous, passive focus on particularly negative emotions." I was and in mostly all ways (aside from literal drugs) been a full blown functioning drug addict for almost 14 of the 32 years I've been alive. I've never put a needle in my arm and have never smoked crack straight up. But have I snorted bags of heroin? Yes. Have I smoked cocaine or meth. Yes. Have I been a pill addict, methadone Clinic patient and at my best points before diving back headfirst into addiction a Suboxone strip patient? YES. And at 32 years old I can honestly say I'm closer to a Chester Bennington result than a productive fulfilling life. Cold turkey doesn't work. Telling myself to think of my successful military wife doesn't help, thinking of being so blessed to still have both of my parents and my younger sister doesn't help either. It all HURTS. It serves as the constant reminder that I have been TRULY the lucky one to have love and life and functioning organs. But for how long......our parents will die. Our organs will fail and our loved ones will find it increasingly harder to love us(and themselves) as a result of our inability to be honest with them. (Or ourselves) Do I want to die sometimes? You bet your life I do. Is it bc I can't forgive myself for things that happened to me as a child or things I have done to others that I find impossible to cope with? Both. Now before anybody jumps out a window thinking this hits home and sees the utter honest hopelessness in my words. Know this: I have stopped taking lorazepam/xanex my antidepressant Zoloft and take no opiates or Suboxone as of just recently and as much as I wake up wanting to die or numb myself into retardation so I can actually get a night's sleep that stops my face from pounding, I also know that all the drugs in the world will NEVER change a Single choice I have EVER made... negative or positive. If laying in bed wailing is what's honestly in my soul, then it's there for a reason and needs to come out. If screaming my favorite Slipknot or Make Them Suffer song till my throat bleeds helps my pain bleed out then you need to fill your life with people who are fine with wearing earplugs. If you have NO ONE like that, remember there is a man who grew up in love with Darkness, masochistic, overly emotional to the core, and confused about sex from seeing such hardcore things as a ten year old by somebody he called "friend" who is still alive at 32 and as much as he's numbed out every bit of pain and emotion he's never felt comfortable with and has wanted to officially give up sometimes every second of every day sometimes for years, he hasn't. Do I have an answer for you? Not even close. In fact, videos like these give me strength bc it reminds me we're all not such different people. I DO however have a longass paragraph of things that are MOST DEFINITELY NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE to the answer. If you have the ability to get help, do it. If you don't, make peace with that shame long enough to ask for it. Bc you will not do it alone. Even with all I have at my disposal it's easy to not use any of it. Do what you have to do to purge the negativity you feel. Bc although it isn't your fault your own mind can be your own worst enemy. Listening to that fool like he has your best interest in mind or like he's anything BUT your enemy, is a bigger waste of time than I can say, and I've wasted over fourteen years of it. Am I afraid I'll never be comfortable? Terrified. Scared I'll never beat it? Everyday. But I promise this life has a purpose for us all. No matter how big or small, you have touched someone sometime that has literally meant the world to them and kept together the world of everyone around them as a result. So no matter how much of a failure you may feel like sometimes try and see how greatly the smallest things you do affect others. If you have the sense to read this and apply it at a young age, please do. Going down this road will make you feel like you have pissed away your time waiting for things to get better. If your older and have already done this to yourself, let me know if you have any advice. Or questions for that matter. I have tried to be honest here(although long AF) bc I want REAL responses. "At the end of my rope I'm waiting......"

Very well put. One of the most important things in life to develop is the ability to be with ourself -- without distraction, without filters, without accompaniment, just be with and deal with the me. It's so vital to being authentic (because we'll know who we are), for having peace of mind (because we're not always frantically trying to keep things at bay), and to creativity and freedom. It's all to darn easy these days to get hooked on something to avoid this very intimate contact with ourself, especially at a very young age (and it only gets harder to learn later on). We may be amused, but we're not fulfilled. So own that addiction for what it is! Be proud! And then put it aside and see what shows up in the space that remains. :)

Yes. I've realized this. What I like at least as much as the important point of view this video brings to light is that it has a positive message! I witness way too much cynicism about difficult topics such as this. The best and smartest thing to do is address the problem and see or find a way to deal with it. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. You get better by first believing there is a way out. I'm glad you didn't just make a video that would connect with and play into people's hopelessness. That probably would've garnered a lot of views which satisfies a shallow desire to get ad revenue through those views, but took the high road and lived up to the values of this video with optimism.

It seems obvious, but it is actually a manifestation of something important from the inner workings of our mind. _One-click_ anything is vastly more addictive than the same thing that requires even a seemingly trivial amount of _conscious effort_ to do it. World Wide Web in itself is an example. Most of its key elements existed for a long time without taking the world over -- there was Internet with remote access to hosts, indices of on-line content (Archie), hypertext as a way of presenting documents. The real explosion only started when a browser (Mosaic) had been written to allow mindless one-click navigation across on-line content. Removing a tiny amount of boring work and a very slight inconvenience made all the difference in how desirable the behavior has become.

When we come face-to-face with them, we're not meeting anything especially foreign, just a part of ourselves in a less respectable form." Wow. Amazing video. I really particularly loved the animation this time. Some videos seem rather arbitrary, but this video painted a consistent, relevant picture. I loved the "normal" man grabbing the hand of the "addict" and running, the way the "addict" looks at their hands, and then he catches up and they're the same person. Beautiful, absolutely moving

Great video! Two of the greatest addictions today that are under reported, shopping and sugar. Think about it, people who are genuinely hooked on both make light of their issue. Unlike illegal drugs or other addictions, you cannot really avoid either. Sugar or sweetners like high fructose corn syrup find their way in many foods and condiments today. Its next to impossible to avoid them. Read the labels in your pantry and refrigerator and you will see how many things it crops up in. There is no way to not shop for the rest of your life. People addicted to shopping have to reach deep inside themselves to mitogate that need to buy or the high from a good deal. Even if its just for survival, there is no way around shopping addiction. So much of the economy is based around impulse purchases or less than ideal products. It's really no surprise that minimalism is gaining momentum in our society today. Those people used to be thought of as poor or strange. Too much of our daily lives is geared towards ritualistic addiction. It cheapens lives and distracts from knowing ourselves and being ourselves. Best of luck to those of you who made it this far.

There are a lot of things that we do like work, exercise that are a part of our lives, and I believe might not necessarily be forms of addiction that you refer to. I liked your video, but there is no one who would only like to be caught up with their thoughts and living in them throughout the day, we need the other stuff in life to go forward. Being caught up in our thoughts is something that I welcome, but would not like to be engaged all the time; that would drive anyone insane. So understanding that all that we do in our life, be it work, exercise, engaging in hobbies, these are not necessarily escapes from our thoughts, emotions and fears, but things we do to build on positive aspects in our lives. They just have that added side benefits of relieving us of our negative emotions. I love the ideas you expressed in this video, especially the one where the child studies to escape from realities, but then there are certain depths to addiction that you really haven't dipped into.

Perhaps a more precise title for this video would be "Why We Are All Escapists." In a sense, no matter what we do we are escaping- working, eating, exercising, meditating, getting high, having kids, inventing, consuming media, day dreaming, having sex, socializing, playing sports, or creating art. It is almost impossible not to escape; maybe staring at a blank wall alone while standing in total silence is the only activity which isn't escapist. Life is all about escape I guess?

Sitting alone with your pain is the most difficult thing I've ever done in 24 years of my life, I started doing it 3 months ago and it seems like the tears won't ever end but it's okay,.. as long as I'm true to myself I am okay. Stay mindful people, stay mindful.

Im addicted to depression, it comes and go but always haunts you whenever vulnerable, that moment you feel like you are non existence and doesnt really matter, suicidal thought begins cluttering in your mind and you just hate everything then become numb and empty shell, nothing makes you happy.

I think it's misleading to say that addiction is just to eliminate dark thoughts. Sometimes you feel like crap without whatever you're addicted to, without having any specific dark thoughts. Like, lower energy, or higher franticness, despite still having self-awareness high self-esteem. Like, many of us might be "addicted" to nature and sunlight, but that doesn't mean that being away from these things is going to "reveal our true nature which we hide from" or something. It's more just, like, in a basic sense, the world is just s**tier and less interesting without these things and you might have less energy or more anxiety.

From observation, I can tell that people have something to comfort themselves, which led me to believe everyone has the ability to lose themselves to pleasure so as to drown the negative things in life. My addiction has been mostly on consuming sugar and soon enough I might develop a heart disease.

Sitting with your thoughts is hard and dark. I have gone to some really dark places when I have. But the more I do it, the easier it is to shake it off. It takes practice and like any muscle the more you work it the stronger it gets.

It's painful understanding our own thoughts. I am changing habits, have realized that they're not healthy for me (mentally and emotionally). Like disconnecting myself to any forms of social media and a disconnect to toxic people. I'm having anxiety attacks and I often feel sad, I don't know what to do... I don't want to go back to my old self. I'm trying to acknowledge what I feel in order for me to grow. And there are days that I feel like I already know the answers but can't seem to apply it consistently. Well, I've been a long time addict and somehow philosophy is healing me.
