I remember as a kid the sensation of being 'bored' and having 'nothing to do'. And yet, aside from daydreaming, it was during those times that I found the most inspiration to try something new, or do something I hadn't done in a long time. But now as an adult not only having more responsibility but many more options to keep myself distracted, I rarely have the opportunity to experience boredom and therefore rarely feel inspired. I believe it is all connected.

i remember being a kid, laying on the floor being bored out of my mind, asking my father to come up with something i could do. he told me "its good to be bored." didnt get it then, but he was right. boredom is what makes us seek exciting things, and it makes those moments greater than if we were never bored.

I was often bored as a kid, and now I'm often bored as an adult. I think it's the combination of personality and resources more than anything. Some people need more novelty and stimulation than their resources can provide them with.

As a middle of the pack millennial, this hit very close to home. As a kid I used to be able to spend a whole day from dawn to dusk reading books, I'd be able to happily sit quietly or walk around aimlessly & just think, for hours at a time. As a teenager I spent every available moment playing videogames, improving my ability to play guitar, or playing around with basic crafts like making bows from raw timber & still managed to read a book now & then. I didn't even want a mobile phone because I didn't like the idea that I should be accessible to other people 24 hours a day, wherever I am, and was the last of my friend group to get one. Since my late teens & through most of my twenties, the internet & social media has absolutely dominated my life & headspace. Whenever I manage to quit one, I just find endless novelty in another one. I don't even have the patience to really sit down & play videogames anymore. I can't even play a round or two of a roguelite or racing game without a podcast playing in the background & I'm too mentally restless to get immersed in story -driven games that I used to absolutely love. It's at the stage where I consciously realise every day that I'm compulsively sinking endless hours of wasted attention & mental effort into things that don't fulfill me & won't improve my life. For brief intervals here & there where I can't use my phone, I'm amazingly productive, attentive & inspired. It feels almost superhuman compared to my usual state of plodding compulsive behaviour. I really wouldn't be surprised if in a few generations, the way we allow devices & systems to be designed today to maximise engagement for its own sake now will be viewed the same way we in the modern day view the 19th & early 20th centuries where arsenic tonic was fed to children & wjere you could buy morphine, heroin & cocaine practically as regular household remedies. Anyway I guess the best kind of success this vid could get would be the worst outcome for this channel - people stop compulsively watching endless KZbin videos lol. I really feel like I want to put my phone down & never pick it up again, but it's just not an option now.

I'm the same way, always watching mindless bullshit on youtube, occasionally searching up intellectual videos (like this one), though most of the time I dive into nihilistic thoughts at a point when continuing after a while. "We'll all be dead within 100 years, so what's the point?", "Humanity probably isn't going to last that much longer on the timescale of the universe anyways, so why make it a point?", ect. Though, I admit, I'm probably overplaying this just a tiny bit compared to my peers at school who're *always* on their phones on TikTok or whatever. I can rarely get a moment of silence to think because of all the racket the kids make.

As someone who spends most of his time in his head, it's absolutely amazing what it can do for you. I'm a student, and I realized a few years ago that when I let myself just blank out for an hour or two everyday, my grades began to improve and I actually understood the topics completely the first time. I am currently in the 99th percentile for math in my grade level, but I used to get C's in math before this. I'm in a school that provides a lot of opportunities to get ahead, so I do have some outlying support, but the point I'm making is that your mind already has the tools it needs to exceed even if you don't realize it. It may not be in math or whatever, but your brain is literally a supercomputer; it will figure things out on its own if you let it.

What makes overstimulation even more popular these days is that it’s so common amongst peers and strangers, that not participating in it draws attention to yourself. If your focus is on the world around you that others are living in, and not sucked into your own personal stimulus, people begin to wonder what your intentions are to be so interested in their world. It makes people uncomfortable what you may be thinking, and we live in a world where making people uncomfortable is extremely discouraged.

People who turn to social media to escape from superficial boredom are unwittingly preventing themselves from progressing to a state of profound boredom, which may open the door to more creative and meaningful activity, a new study of the Covid pandemic shows. Researchers from the University of Bath School of Management and Trinity College, Dublin, identified that the pandemic, furlough, and enforced solitude provided many people with the rare opportunity to experience the two levels of boredom - ‘superficial’ and ‘profound’ - identified first by German philosopher Martin Heidegger. Superficial boredom - the most common state of boredom - can be defined as a feeling of restlessness familiar to us all, of being bored in a situation such as waiting for a train where we seek temporary distractions from everyday life and in which social media and mobile devices play a significant role. Profound boredom stems from an abundance of uninterrupted time spent in relative solitude, which can lead to indifference, apathy, and people questioning their sense of self and their existence - but which Heidegger said could also pave the way to more creative thinking and activity. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/14705931221138617

It’s really not the boredom for me… it’s my mind is often a nightmare. I love the moments when I can just sit quietly doing a mundane task and let my mind wander. I journal so much in those moments and I discover great truths about myself and my life… but then the anxiety and depression hit and that’s what becomes unbearable.

As someone who likes to draw, I sometimes run out of ideas and have a difficult time thinking of new drawing ideas, and for quite awhile now my thought process was "I just need to get inspired." and the way I decided to try and do that was to watch videos, shows and basically any media I enjoyed. I thought the more media I consumed, the higher chance I'd have of finding something that would give me a good idea. Maybe next time I'll just sit down with my sketchbook open until I think of something. This is an excellent video.

So, I'm ADHD, and it's really interesting being a person who has low dopamine already. I NEED to be stimulated, or at least, I thought that I needed that. When I stopped adding things to my life, when I deleted social media, when I got rid of all that, and stopped listening to music as much (i still listen to it a lot, although last year I listened to it for over a fourth of the whole year), my life and mental wellbeing changed. I now, it seems, am the only person I really know that can put his emotions into words nearly instantly, and can understand why I do things and where my own motivations come from in very quick formation. Along with that, I went from hating being in silence to loving it, to talking to myself about topics that I wanted to go deeper into, to praying more, to meditating, and all of that. I can sit in silence with nothing but my own self and think deeply now, and it actually has become quite enjoyable as all other moments on youtube or anything else (save this channel which keeps me thinking) often kills all my brain activity. Now, I'm not saying this will cure your depression or be fun for you like it was for me, but all I know is that the way that I viewed the world did change, and the way that I went through life was shaped by it. Boredom isn't a killer, it's simply the basis of our thoughts, but we're so against it in favor of flight that we forget sometimes that we need to be grounded.

*Have you ever lied, stolen, cursed, committed adultery, or even murder? Then you have sinned.* Sin, according to the Bible, is lawlessness. (1 John 3:4) In other words, you broke God’s law and you are His enemy. God’s enemies end up in Hell, which is a place where there is outer darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth, and torment that goes on forever with no rest. (Matthew 25:30, Matthew 25:31-36, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, Revelation 14:11) Anybody that ends up in Hell will NOT have a second chance after the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27) *Does that concern you?* You might be thinking, “I haven’t murdered anyone or committed any of the bigger sins worthy of hell.” Well, let’s see about that. Did you know that just having hatred towards someone else makes you a murderer at heart? (Matthew 5:21-22 and 1 John 3:15) If you looked at a person that you are not married to with lust (sexual desire), then you already committed adultery with them in your heart. (Matthew 5:27-28) If you have ever said "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ," as a means to express frustration or annoyance, then you have used the Lord's name in vain and used it in place of a curse word. You wouldn't use your mother's name or loved one's name as a curse word, would you? By saying His name in place of a curse word, you have insulted your creator. He has given you life, eyes to see, ears to hear, and taste buds for food. *If you have committed ANY one of these sins, then you are destined to go to hell. Do you know what God did for guilty sinners, so that they wouldn’t end up in hell?* *God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins, He was buried in a tomb, and He rose on the third day. We have all sinned and Jesus died for all of us because He loves us all, and took a punishment that we rightly deserve. We all deserve to go to hell, but Jesus Christ made a way out for us and to be free of our sins. God's wrath is on those who remain in their sins and do not believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. We must repent of our sins, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and live for Him with the help of His Holy Spirit, which leads us to live godly/holy lives on this Earth. We live as saints (not sinners) to show our gratitude for the love He has demonstrated to us by taking up the cross. We must have faith (believe/trust) in Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God it will lead us to salvation. Also, FEAR GOD to stay away from evil and things that would otherwise corrupt us morally, and serve Him on this Earth.* "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7) "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21) "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38) "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) "For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." (Romans 5:7-11) "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:1-4) "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." (Romans 8:13-14) "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (Romans 10:9-13) "Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.' " (2 Timothy 2:19) "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14) "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear." (1 Peter 1:15-17) “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) *That was the Gospel message. Believe in the Gospel and obey the Lord Jesus Christ!*

I've probably cut down on "distractions" by about 75% in the last year or two, and have created a kind of game plan of slowly cutting the remaining 95% down over the next nine months. I'm going on a week long silent retreat then and don't want to have devastating withdrawal symptoms. A lot of this is also very helpful for meditation practices in general. The fewer distractions you have, and the more "space" you give your mind to just work on its own, the less insistant it is going to be when you do actually try to stay focused on the breath and let thoughts fade into the background. But since this is all dopamine-based, it's very difficult to cut yourself off cold turkey, unless you have no choice (like you are lost in the wilderness or something). But doing a gradual cutting down can work because the discomfort level is manageable and you get used to a new level each week or month as you cut back.

@@_shadow_1 yeah, I understand a lot of people have intrusive thoughts, but it's ultimately a self-defeating strategy becaus it ends up just pushing those thoughts and feelings away for the moment and they they can resurface at any time and often do at the worst possible moment. Better to actually deal with those thoughts through therapy, meditation, and other modalities rather than just distracting yourself which has its own problems, as this video demonstrates.

It feels like unplugging from the matrix because it IS unplugging from the matrix. I truly believe social media has spiraled into an alternate reality similar to the matrix. People spend literally their entire day on their phones. Most people my age spend probably around 6 to 8 hours on their phone, looking at a screen instead of enjoying being in the real world. They're plugged in. But more and more people, people like you, are starting to realize the dangers of it.

I started to quit Social Media. I had a panic attack on 24th dec and I really think it is linked to my daily use of dating apps on a 2 week streak, and also when I was trying to avoid facing my problems since the Covid pandemic hit. I lost a lot of things in the last couple of years, and social media and long working hours distracted me from getting any therapy. So it was understandable that I decided to harm myself and others while I was considereing myself to be completely alone and left behind in life. No more, only 1 hour per day I allow myself to use them and get to know the daily news, but thats it. I feel a lot better after 1 month!

I think part of the problem is boredom mixed with a lack of resources or actual time to something with the "eureka" thoughts you have in boredom. Boredom with restraint from action turns into contempt and depression. Many of the amazing thinkers and engineers who created such profound milestones in the human race were allowed to be bored without expectation of participation in menial, mind-numbing labor or work that gives you only enough resources to survive for a moment before going back to work to survive another moment. We can't all just be bored and expect to do great things. You need freedom and plentiful resources to do that. Then, being bored does something for you.

When I was a kid I couldn't go outside and play with the neighbors, so spending time doing nothing and contemplating was kinda of my default mode. The loneliness, boredom and desire to go out made me see things and form opinions that I hold true to this day. So, not only for this creative rush, I personally think that taking time to be by yourself without any distraction will make you perceive valuable traits you've got, that would otherwise be buried under trends and quick information

Boredom and disconnection from the media can be gold in the era we live in. Most people can't even think for themselves because they are too accustomed to ingest information, but never taking the time to create their own ideas. Creativity might be dying because boredom has been inhibited by the flood of info from the media.

For me, overstimulation has been a coping mechanism before anything else. If I enter a time in which my mind starts to wander, the thoughts usually end up in the same place: a deep, deep hole of hatred towards the world and myself. I know that keeping my brain extremely busy all the time is incredibly taxing, but at the same time I just don't want to enter the dark place in the back of my mind. I've yet to find a way to manage my thoughts in a healthy way. Up until that happens, my choice between overstimulation and boredom leads to negative. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

I was born in 1987. I miss the days before smart phones. It's weird because they're so addicting but at the same time I can feel and see how much harm they cause. I miss the days when I could just sit in deep contemplation, read a book, practice a hobby.

I have opposite problem I play with scenarios in my head a lot. Granted most of the are regrets and how I could have changed it but what I yearn for in those thoughts is when I am thinking of something philosophical or about how I can make my future better. This is how I've always been, playing inside my head made me antisocial this brought me anxiety thinking it was going to develop in schizophrenia but now I am fine with it as long as I can indulge in my own thoughts.

Glad I came across this. I recently was pushed out of my startup leadership (i co-founded it) and spiraled into a situation where I was living in Ft. Lauderdale for two weeks in this apartment I hated. I just went outside every day and fed the ducks near this lake. I was reading sometimes, and other times I was just staring out at the lake for hours. It revitalized my sense of purpose and motivated me to get back to the things I love, in the city I love: Atlanta.

As someone who suffers from intrusive thoughts due to my mental disorders, I frankly miss the time when I could enjoy being bored and having nothing to do. It would let my mind run wild. I'd be at my most creative and imaginative in those times. The increasingly loud ITs just made that more difficult or impossible for me, which had also negatively affected my creativity as a kid growing up. I'd now have to keep myself busy or distracted to drown the ITs out especially during a bout/episode. There are, however, random times when the ITs would become weak or go completely silent for 5-30 minutes, and I'd stop whatever I'm doing or playing to sit back/lie down and cherish those rare moments of *true* silence.

Can I make a suggestion? Have you considered food as the source of ITs? I know it sounds crazy but when I eliminate chocolate and cut back on sugar and caffeine, my mind calms down. There's a TED TALK about the role of nutrition in mental health (Julia R...something?) I wish it were discussed more frequently. I suffer with depression, ADHD, and anxiety....and I actually had a calm mind when I did a whole food diet for 5 weeks (no wheat. Butter was allowed but not much else for dairy....no sugar etc). It was wild

For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (Romans 10:9-13) "Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.' " (2 Timothy 2:19) "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14) "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear." (1 Peter 1:15-17) “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) *That was the Gospel message. the biggest thing preventing me from doing nothing is the fact that it seems weird for other people. my friends have once asked me why i’m staring into empty space doing nothing and it honestly made me uncomfortable, so i just picked up my phone and scrolled like what they were doing. i don’t even enjoy it. i actually hate it, ‘cause every single swipe i do and every little scroll makes me infuriated. i hate my phone, but i also hate being deemed as a weirdo for simply sitting still and just observing my surroundings. it’s so sad, ‘cause once you actually take a step back and observe any public place, you will 100% see atleast one person just mindlessly scrolling through their phone. it’s so depressing once you actually take the time to witness how robotic everyone seems nowadays. everyone is the same. it makes me wonder what humanity would be like in a few decades, or if there would be any humanity left in us at all.

An excellent documentary of how our minds work. I tend to ruminate about past events, how I could have reacted differently, and possible consequences, when I am travelling on bus. Sometimes, it adds stress to my life as I keep on rethinking about the negative parts. However, these rumination help me manage my feelings and to think about the situation in different perspectives, giving me a clearer view of the whole picture. what really worries me is that I have no memories of getting home, but I am home. It is like short term memory loss or something.

I have the exact opposite thing that’s going on in my case of mindless scrolling. I was born autistic and I’ve always been the quiet but weird kid growing up. I just daydreamed a lot and had this sort of obsession to collect information and knowledge. Adults loved me because my uncontrollable curiosity naturally turned me into a heavy reader but as I was growing up I grew more dependent and dependent on technology for collecting information. (In fact, English is my third language and I learned it on my own while interacting with foreigners online.) I’m also a digital artist so as you pointed out in the video, doing art has always been very therapeutic for me because I can be left alone with my thoughts or listen to an audiobook while I’m painting. But I no longer have my iPad and I’m just scrolling mindlessly because I now literally want to be left alone FROM my thoughts, not with my thoughts.

I quit hardcore gaming a year ago (after many attempts) and I feel so much more free now. Working at my irl skills has been much more productive than grinding my Overwatch skills and it is extremely challenging to be okay with being bored, however if you can become comfortable with it you will create things that you never thought you could.

This video has a profound message. Thank you for taking the time to deliver it so thoughtfully. Meditation, reflection, contemplation, stillness are all necessities for the human genius. Social media not so much, even though its been marketed as such. I hope that, if you’re like me and have struggled to find the right balance between stillness and all of the exogenous stimulants this world has to offer, that you really do just break from the world for a bit. It could bring you the impetus to quit the stimulants that aren’t draining your peace.

I'm a User Experience Designer and Researcher who's also Autistic and has ADHD. I agree with a lot of the points made in this video... But, on the Autism side, my brain is, a lot of the time, way too sensitive to sensory experiences of the outside world. Sometimes, I need a podcast or music playing to survive going to the grocery store, mitigate issues while I'm driving, dampen noises coming from the city while walking around, among other scenarios... On the ADHD side, my brain has NO problem distracting myself from what I need to do and I can remember myself as a kid and Teen (in the age before cell phones) being so busy with things that just didn't matter. I didn't have a phone as an excuse for my daydreaming and distractions and couldn't explain why I was so distant and inattentive at times... It takes A LOT of introspection (and discipline afterwards) to figure out what you do and don't need from digital spaces and to design and engineer ones life around priorities. I've severely cut down on checking emails that don't matter and have also had a good habit of meditating about 15 mins a day, just to check in with my body and explore how I'm feeling at a given moment. I think the main issue is that Late Stage Captialism doesn't care what you, the specific user/person, wants in Life. A lot of the bigger platforms are a One Size Fits All of the worst variety, where they assume that all people will want to be online for hours, interact with an interface in the same way, or "get things done" in a cookie cutter fashion. Unfo, it's up to individuals to figure out what they want to spend their digital time doing and if it's rewarding. It takes a lot of work at the beginning, but oncr you find out that you're not using 75% of the apps you have installed on your phone/tablet, it gets easier to pare down what you have, focus on what you truly want to do, and set up a digital environment that can set you up for success (and even send you helpful reminders vs loud, obnoxious ones) and help push you to live Your Best Life!

There’s something about this that just makes so much more sense, recently looking back of videos and photos taken of me years ago I don’t seem to think about those memories that much, it’s because I’ve been so attached and seeking stimulation on my phone ever since I was a teenager that I never have the thought process to think about my goals and life experiences, it makes so much sense why I feel introverted and why life doesn’t seem as happy now as it used to and it makes a lot of sense as to why, my attention span is shorter and I don’t go out of my way to make the most of life in small ways, I never give myself boredom

When it comes to the need for us to have some sort of stimulation, I've had a lot of experience discovering that. I used to be very numb emotionally when I was younger, never experiencing things like anxiety until after I graduated high school. I would describe it by saying that most people have an emotional range that goes from 8 to -8 with some only experiencing a higher range under extreme conditions like drugs. Where most people had a large emotional range and could either be very happy (8), normal (0) (which I would say is something like being bored) and very mad (-8), I myself only experienced things from a range of about 3 to --2. Even in the best conditions with all that I could ask for, I could only feel mild joy, and even when being yelled at or experiencing trauma, I could only feel slight discomfort. Being numb may seem like a great thing so you don't experience the emotional pain that your surroundings may inflict on you but in reality, due to our need for stimulation, it is almost more harmful. I would constantly need stimulation, and the easiest stimulation to obtain is negative. I would self harm and self medicate with the desire to just feel something, anything at all. I would stab my chest and hands, rough-house with dogs so their teeth and claws would scratch and scar me and I would put my hands in burning hot water or constantly punch hard surfaces making them bleed. My behavior with people was also borderline sociopathic. It's very wild to me how something that I would normally think would be such a good thing, like not being able to feel pain, can be so destructive for a person, and it seems to mostly stem back to this need for stimulation.

I haven't watched this video yet and I don't know if I will. I'm addicted to video games again after starting my full time job, and it's destroying me. I love playing the game. It's all I want to do. It relaxes me and distracts me from my job that I am already miserable in. Before I started the job, I would play games, but only for a few hours. I would sit in my living room and look at the sky, go on walks and swing at the park, color in an adult coloring book or crochet while listening to music. I would go to a rock climbing gym multiple times a week and turn my mind off to the puzzle workout that it is. I'm so overwhelmed constantly. I know I need to get out of my job and into another one (I'm in Public Accounting), but I need to also kick my video game habit again. It hurts relapsing into this addiction.

I find that if you break up with using media to occupy your time and you ALWAYS choose to be productive, what happens is you form a new relationship w media: It's a real break. When your brain is hard at work trying to improve your life, it needs small intervals throughout the day in which it's allowed to stop making decisions and constantly deciphering life, and then things like youtube and tv become a lot more healthy, because if you can really spend no more than 45 minutes but ideally 5-20 minutes "resting" your mind with stimuli a few times a day, it creates these really helpful windows from which you exit with a recharged effect. I find that when I feel burnout coming on, or daunted, watching a little video or 15min of a tv show can really reset me and help me take on the next task. It becomes addictive to function like this, and you no longer want to just slug around on your phone, because you become excited for the sensation of feeling truly ready to take on the next thing. Plus this system encourages me to watch short animations or topic exploration videos (much like this one!) so I'm generally prouder of how my time is spent online, bc it feels enriching instead of cheap and impulsive

I dont like to stay alone with my thoughts not because its boring. But because my mind always drifts to dark subjects i hate thinking about such as the terriying fact that one day i will die and dont know what happens afterwards. Its easily one of my crippling fears do to it being literally inevitable. Its like having a serial killer waiting to kill you for your entire life but you KNOW theyre going to kill you. Thoughts like that are deeply uncomfortable to think about an usually invasive. Doing things distracts me from the really horrifying reality of some things.

Watched this video yesterday and those seconds between 4:00-5:12 was likely the most important message I‘ve ever received. I honestly never had a thought that deep about overstimulation. I always thought it is just about having more time to improve yourself and beeing more productive, meanwhile it‘s so much more. I learned all the important skills about ecommerce the last 2 years, then got in a hole of not knowing what to launch, even with a exploding trends analyzer. Today, I shut down my phone from 8:00-23:00 and only had this analyzing tool, a pen and a paper and google in front of me. Today, I have found 12 new ideas and I‘ve literally never went to bed this accomplished. Thank you!

As a 14 year old diagnosed with ADHD, I usually need this stimulation everyday to get just a bit of dopamine. I either will go on IG or Snap and stay there for hours or I will try new hobbies, just to stop the hobby in the next hour. While I am on YT, IG, Snap, etc, I do try to find more informational videos to make it slightly better than just memes or random videos. Its not just media but also food and drinks. I don’t gain much weight though because of my ADHD medication. If you see this, have a great day. If you aren’t, hopefully it gets better.

be careful with ADHD medication. Not saying don't take it. But watch dosage. Take tolerance breaks. Maybe don't even take it if you don't have school related obligations. They have negative side effects especially at higher dosages and also there can be dependence forming effects along with the subsequent withdrawal so you wanna get used to cycling them and reducing tolerance buildup IMHO, psych doc might disagree but I'm crazy

It's not only boredom, it's also curiousity. Why we turn to social media. And it can also be inspiring, as much as staring out the window. Ideally we should find a balance, which might take some time. For some people it might be impossible. Personally I think that it's worse for content creators than the casual observer but that's just my opinion. Other than that I agree with the points made here, I grew up being bored and having no overstimulation and I feel bad that's not even an option today.

Bro , i literally made some wise decisions regarding my future . I was planning about an incident and was confused on my course of action for quite a few days . I am actually amazed that just 15 minutes of deep thinking made me solve my dilemma. In fact a when the timer went off i continued to quitely ponder . Belive me try it out for yourself, I think this was just what meditation feels like. Any ways thanks brother for this informative eye-opener.

This is so true. When you detach yourself from the natural pleasures that you have to strive to achieve instead you switch to instant gratifications it really makes your brain not want to do anything.

*Watches video halfway* *Clicks away, checks messages, talks to 3 people at once, checks other videos* We are messed up. What's interesting is that from my personal experience, everything said in this video is real. Back in my early teenage years, I used to just sit still, lie down and do nothing but think about all sorts of things, come with solutions, interesting thoughts and prespectives about life. One mistake I made was to never write them down. I was frustrated because I thought of so many interesting things and next day I'd just forget everything. Although whenever I try to write something down my ideas vanish and my train of thoughts kind of gets ruined. Anyways, ever since I've stopped doing that I've always felt that I became straight up dumber, that I became more bland, had no interesting thoughts, lost creativity, started expressing myself poorly, even the way I talk is pretty bad. Although I knew about the problems overstimulation causes, I never drew the connection between it and why I've felt so sad, unfulfilled and hollow for these past few years, even though it should've been obvious as I knew about the side effects. This video's clear and to the point explanation helped me realise this.

Lately, the only time I actually use my phone for stimulation (such as watching videos on YT) is late at night which is undoubtedly unhealthy as it reduces my sleeping time. Aside from that, I use it to read, write or listen to music. It’s strange.

The mind is so interesting, but now that we are so wired to be overstimulated. For someone who is anxious and overthinks, how would the absense of overstimulation treat them? Would the long-term be best or would it make them insane?

I've thought about this for years, we are becoming incapable of being bored and we're loosing the ability to embrace it for what it is. Some of my best ideas have come from spouts of boredom and learning to embrace it can be a wonderful thing! That's why i've started turning my phone off on Sundays... so I can focus on just 'being' instead of 'being distracted'.

When I was in school I remember waiting in line at the cafeteria and started day dreaming. The lady serving the food made it a big deal and seemed like it was a bad thing. She thought something was wrong and kept saying that she would pray for me that my life would get better. People have lost it. Am I the only one that has a hard time just watching KZbin videos or getting on social media? I usually get bored as soon as I open the apps and turn my phone off. I’ll just lay there with my eyes open or close. I find those to be my most relaxing hours. To finally let my brain quit working and let it wonder.
