Faker's $500 Skin Is F@*king Ridiculous

Faker’s new hall of fame skin bundles were revealed this week. There’s 3 tiers which include increasingly fancy Ahri skins and their animations look great. The only issue is - to get the highest tier skin, it’s gonna cost around $500 US Dollars.
People have accused Riot of money grabbing, of tarnishing the new Hall of Legends already, and even of exploiting Faker for their own gain. Let’s get into it.

I actually feel really bad for Faker. These last couple of years he and his family received a huge amount of threats from the public for performances at worlds. More recently his team has been struggling to even be able to compete due to DDOS attacks. I don't always agree with TB Skyen's points, but he absolutely nailed it with this one: DO NOT validate this kind of business practice with your money. Because what Riot is doing is testing the waters, to see how far they can push players' boundaries -- either so that they can release an _even more_ expensive skin later down the road, or so that they can lower the price of this to something like $250 (still outrageous for a skin) so that they can smugly say "We've listened to the feedback".

You mention in this video that Faker gets 30%. That's not correct. T1 gets 30%, as in the entire team. Faker himself is likely seeing much less than that ( which doesn't really change anything abou the situation, just makes it even worse.) EDIT: MY BAD, FAQ does specifically say "Yes, the 2024 inductee and some LoL Esports teams will earn 30% of gross revenue from the Hall of Legends event.". It's actually sad how I have to spend 500$ to fully celebrate Faker's reign. League of Legends skins used to be saving money to buy them for me. Pulse gun Ezreal was the best example, where it was over my 25$ allowance, so I had to save for 2 months. However, 500$ is a whole different issue. Not only does it fundamentally go against Faker's mindset of not using skins, it rejects Faker's mindset that "The rich need to give to the poor". He once directly said in a stream that they shouldn't donate to him, that donating is what rich people like him. 500$ is over some people's monthly WAGES. For a single-game cosmetic (well I know there's more in the package) this is over the top (for a Riot game). Riot is also doing a 70:30 share with Faker, so are they using Faker's legacy, creating a skin, and taking 70% of the revenue? Is this truly celebrating Faker, or is this using Faker? It's also limited and will never appear again, forcing people to buy it. This will be yearly. YEARLY. A YEARLY CASH GRAB WITH RIOT 70:30 PLAYER FOR A CONCEPT WHERE RIOT USES THE PLAYER'S LEGACY AND FANBASE TO EARN MONEY, PRESSURIZING THEM TO BUY A SKIN WORTH A LOT OF PEOPLE'S MONTHLY WAGE SINCE IT'S LIMITED AND NEVER APPEARING AGAIN. And even worse still it's a timed thing so it means that once time is up you can no longer get the skins, not skin, skins, AND they will not be included in the rerolls system, meaning if you have 3 skin shards to reroll for a permanent skin, when you go to reroll them, none of these skins will appear at all, a flat 0% chance of getting them. Not even in "Your Shop" will it appear. This is as FOMO as FOMO can get.

Not to mention that selling the skin exclusively in a bundle is ILLEGAL in many countries in the world such as Brazil. If this skin releases with these prices exclusively in a bundle, we will probably be seeing legal action for many countries similarly to what happened on overwatch 2's release with their shop. This is abusive practice. For those interested in Brazil's specific law - Article 39 of the CDC( Defensive Code of the Consumer) Suppliers of products or services are prohibited from, among other abusive practices: "I - Condition the supply of a product or service on the supply of another product or service, as well as, without just cause, on quantitative limits." ( selling the skin exclusively in a bundle, knowing that they normally sell similar items as separate products in their in-game shop ) ... "V - Demanding clearly excessive benefits from the consumer." ( the ABSURD price of the skin, knowing that they have sold items with similar value for around 25$, ultimate skins, setting a standard ) and possibly more that i'm not aware of.

I recently removed LoL from my PC 'cos of the Vanguard anti-cheat (kernel-level anti-cheat is horseshit and I refuse to leave my network vulnerable to hackers [yes, it does leave it vulnerable. I don't remember people having issues with Elementalist Lux, it was a pretty big step up from previous ultimate skins. You got what is essentially 10 skins, all with different models, VFX, and voice-overs that you could change into through a "minigame" during the match, all that for around $25 USD. This whole situation with the Ahri skins is actually even more hilarious when you remember that Elementalist Lux is a thing. The Ahri skin is basically an NFT, it's expensive because someone decided it is, not because it's actually worth that value, not even close.

And the rarity aspect is completely artificial, this is digital goods, there's no actual scarcity. You can do the same by making a picture of a poorly drawn dog in Paint and say that it's worth $500, sure, it's a rare piece of digital art, but it doesn't actually get any value for being rare like a painting from the renaissance of which there are only a few in the world does.

For roughly the same price you can buy the Spirit Blossom Kindred figure from Riot. It is a physical item that you can actually keep in your house and display, and it won't vanish from your life once League of Legends finally reaches end of service. In fact, its value may actually increase after that point as figures are naturally collector's items. I genuinely thought you would bring a comparison with DOTA2's latest update, where Valve went the exact opposite way, listening to the players. Sure the $200 skins and prestige skins are really expensive, but they are all slightly alternative versions of their base skins.
