WGN-TV Final Chicago White Sox signoff (9/28/2019)

Although the station is mostly remembered for its 71-year run covering Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball games, WGN-TV Channel 9 also had a rich history with the Chicago White Sox, televising their games for 51 years.
Just like the station's relationship with the Cubs the night before, WGN's partnership with the Sox came to an end on September 28th, 2019 as the South Siders were defeated by the Detroit Tigers 4-3. Included is a montage highlighting some of the great moments in White Sox history that were covered by Channel 9 over the course of its 51-year history covering the South Siders.

You could hear Steve holding back tears at the end. I'm a Sox fan and honestly am pissed at WGN for turning us into the underdogs in popularity of Chicago baseball..... but it definitely was a good run at the end of the day.

So,what station is carrying the Sox and the Cubs in 2020? I enjoyed WGN,especially in 1998 when McGwire and Sosa battled in the greatest home run chase,when Kerry struck out 20, I could go on.

mike leon After the 2019-2020 season, it is assumed that the Bulls and Blackhawks are exclusive to NBC Sports Chicago. The Sox are moving to NBC Sports Chicago next season. NBC Sports Chicago is on cable.

As a kid in Florida I used to enjoy watching superstation WGN because of the sitcoms and of course AFV. Sometimes I did watch a little bit of Cubs and White Sox games on WGN it was not bad. Saying goodbye to WGN is definitely a hard thing to do and tough.

I hate the fact that there's no more Chicago Sports on broadcast anymore as it was great to go back-and-forth between the broadcast and cable telecasts. It's so boring with the games all on one network now. This was a tradition that should've never been broken. In New York, the Yankees have select games on broadcast so maybe in the future, there will be a select few games that go back on broadcast. I don't see the whole exclusive cable thing lasting forever. If they can find a way to make it financially feasible to at least simulcast the NBC Sports Channel games then it can happen. I'm so glad the NFL still values broadcast over cable.

And now in 2024 the Sox, Bulls, and Hawks will all be free OTA again with the new Chicago Sports Network. NBC Sports Chicago (cable) will cease to exist as of Sep 30, 2024. Wild.

The Cubs started the Marquee Network, and the other three teams signed exclusive deals with NBC Sports Chicago.
