Im old enough to remember when we went decimal,i remember going to the shopthe next day with my shilling pocket money and asking for my usual 12 penny carmels (2aday and one on sat/sun,my little 6or 7 yr old brain was baffled when the shopkeeper told me i could only get 5for a shilling now ?i couldn't understand what was happening and was utterly devastated,im now 60 and that memory still haunts me,hahaha

I remember that Change over period well too. Everything went up over Night. Even if Harold Wilson said it would not effect the Pound in Our Pocket's..! He was very wrong..! If it didn't go up Overnight it did in the Weeks following..! There was a Lot of 'Rounding Up' going on..! But most of us were to confussed to bother trying to work it out..! The Coin of 1/2 New Pence value. Was Very quickly was Dropped. Not worth the Copper it was Struck on.! But it was Great for this Coin Collecting Paper Boy. As people were keen to Get Rid of their old Pre Decimal coins before they were withdrawn. I had a Great time as people cleaned out their Change Collection..! So I have mixed Memories of that time. 😂 or 😢

Watching from the American South and really enjoyed this one - subscribed, too! Both of my father's parents descended directly from Highland Scots who came here (to North Carolina) around 1750. You are so fortunate to have such a long history of metal artifacts to find there - from the Celts to the Romans. Here, we get excited to find Civil War bullets and artifacts, from only 160 years ago. But, in New England (NE U.S.), artifacts can date to 1600s. However, my house and acreage sits on woodlands above a creek system, so I commonly find Paleo Indian artifacts right around my house that go back 5 - 8,000 years, having found many stone axeheads, spearpoints, and arrowheads. Great finds!

Yes, we here in Great Britain are truly bless with 2000 years of history that is right beneath our feet. Don't be too downhearted about the lack of historical finds. Americans living today are busy making your own history. Who knows what they will be digging up in 1500 years from now. I watched a Google post the other day. One of you guys over there was digging up and washing out flint arrowheads along a river. So there is history but not much metal I think...apart from musket balls that is. Keep well

Well its a cold wet day in Gippsland Victoria Australia today, and you have made me feel ashamed of myself for sitting home in front of the heater, but you have sparked me to rug up, get out and do some hunting myself, but no chances of a hammered here unfortunately, but George the fifth, is well on the cards. A very nice silver to end this video, Oh! you missed your one George 6 on your last coin count, I have a bit of an ancestry link to scotland as I am a decendant of the Armstrong clan, one of the border reevers familys of apparent notoriety. then Ireland, followed by Australia in 1841. They all lived harder lives than me, and I wonder how I would have coped in any of those periods of history!... looking forward to your continuing hunt, and seeing what awaits you in your next dig! Cheers Mate!

*Great day, John, even with the rain! Such wonderful finds - CONGRATULATIONS!* 👍🖖 Aside: I was born & raised in "Rainy Oregon," which is just north of "Sunny California," USA. In Oregon, even though it _DOES_ rain quite a lot, we always tried to remember to think & say this: *"It isn't raining rain today, it's raining daffodils!"* According to Scotland's most famous poet, Rabbie Burns, Scotland, too, is noted for _LOTS_ of daffodils, so _ENJOY THAT RAIN,_ as Spring will soon arrive, and also *_DAFFODILS!_* 🤗

Gosh, you could never find impressive coins like this in the US just in a field. Honestly! This is exciting! What were they doing in these fields that would have caused all these coins to be dropped? One would think of a produce market of some such. Wow, you really hit the jackpot with the ancient 1200-1300 silver coin! You would NEVER find a coin that old in the US, that's for sure! Well done you! This was fascinating. It just shows how ANCIENT Scotland is. Thanks so much from Florida, USA!

Hi John, I just found your channel and it's wonderful! I've been detecting for about 40 years now and my best coin find was a 1879 US silver dollar. Not quite up to the par of what you're finding across the pond. Thanks for the interesting historical commentary along with showing your finds, I like understanding the context, and your silver count was pretty dang good for one day! Can I just say I'm pea green with envy that you have such wonderful old treasures to hunt! I just also watched the Celtic bull episode and it was a-maz-ing. Our finds here in Oklahoma for the most part don't get much older than the late 1800s, and those are quite rare these days. I want to come hunt with you. Congrats on a productive day!

Enjoyed you telling about the copper penny had not been lost that long ago to be in the shape it is. I traveled to Scotland in 1976 and at a bar the barkeep heard me talking about old coins and in his cash register drawer remarkably had several older copper pennies from the 1930s and 40's ! People brought them in to buy a pint ? One was old with the bust of George V . I could not believe it and he gave them to me. I tipped him well a very good man and could relate as my father owned a bar/restaurant in Virginia and I mixed drinks there and served alcohol and food back then

I have always wondered what the distinction of coins having a left or right facing head on the coin. I enjoy you videos, I can’t wait until you new videos pop up so I can watch them and learn more about Scotland and it’s history.

I can understand a small coin leaving a hole in a pocket but how did these large sized penny coins get lost?

It’s a good question. Poorly designed pockets back in the day I think, ending over, kneeling down, lying down eating lunch and they are gone!
