The rock is a roofing rock. When roofs were thatched, a rope was tied around rocks and slung from one side to the other where it was attached to another rock. They were every foot or so along the length of the roof. Kept the roof on during storms! 😊

Would LOVE a Highland! Would be perfect for hauling logs out of the forest. It's on the list, it'd be amazing just to have livestock to work for us...horses for hauling, pigs for clearing, that sort of thing.

I've started following this channel a while ago, and i love the videos. But I can't get a clear picture of the layout of the island. It would be great to see a map of what is where. I think the stone may have weathered naturally like that. It looks like a band of mineral runs around where you suggest the rope went, if this mineral was softer than the surrounding rock you would get a band like that. Obviously it would be the natural choice for a fishing net stone as the groove for the rope is already formed. Im certainly enjoying watching your videos.😊

The rock is naturally shaped like that simply due to weathering, but that shape of rock was often used to weight fishing nets. If used for a while the narrow spot should be smoothed due to wear from the ropes used to secure it. My suspicion is that, in this case, it is just an interestingly shaped rock.

​@@TheScottishIsle Here in rural northern tier US, we have mosquitos , no see ums (? don't know another name for them) and black flies. They all love damp years, they bite...Hard! and black flies swell up and itch horribly. But at least most of them have their seasons. What about the midges? Are they always about, or are there times when they aren't? I so enjoy your videos. Would rust converter, or something like muriatic acid, help with the rust on the wood burner? The rust converter actually does what the name implies, bonds to the rust to keep the oxygen away and turns it black. I have no idea if it would work on a wood burner safely, just a thought.

Just love your channel folks. Btw, I get old horseshoes with a heavy surface rust and soak them at least 48 hours in straight malt vinegar. Then using a wire brush, clean up and hey presto, job done. Simple. Then turn them into pot holders, or whatever. The trick is to let the vinegar work for you. Try it on the stove. That rock with the groove is as you suggested, probably for thatch. It wouldn't work on holding a set net. Water movement would just move it around too much. I wish this 77 yr old could come over and help you out. And help keep you focused. Set yourself a project, and do it. It's called effective/efficient management of time. Keep on keeping on. Take care folks.

Great job on the stove👍👍, across the pond here in New Scotland we are having record rainfall, creating havic for most agricultural crops. Midges haven't been too bad , maybe were drowned in the violent downpours. We have had 3 sunny days in a row, a blessing for farmers trying to make hay, the weather has been totally shite. Get yourself two 4 wheeled carts, the ones with rubber tires, better than using a wheel barrel, they are easier to pull up and down hills, use it for groceries, wood etc

I don't if they work on highland midges, but smudge pots are a wonder for clearing mosquitos and other biting flies around our lake property. A smudge pot is basically just a small fire topped with lots of greenery that generates smoke. Our lake property has almost an acre of sage, thyme and rosemary gone wild so our smudge pots are rather fragrant. You can also approximate the effect using Tiki torches filled with Citronella oil.

Another lovely video! I admire both of your clothing style! Very stylish. And I adore those dresses you wear and work with :) Not sure what the stone is but a nice one for decoration. I also use cheap white vinegar as a soak on old rusty items. Overnight, rinse, brush, and again as needed. With the stove, it may be a bit difficult, maybe laying it flat, one side at a time? Re the midgie situation. I watch an American metal detectorist and in one of his videos he came upon a place where the trees were covered in empty vicks vapour rub containers. It turns out it's what American hunters use as insect repellent. Told a friend who went to Barbados and he used it and never got one bite. 👍

I think the way I see this stone, it is heavy enough to have something to do with fishing. I believe it has something to do with either measuring the bottom of the sea or more likely some kind of anchor for small boats.

I use hydrochloric acid to remove rust. A 10 % solution in a plastic container is best. Watch out, as after a few hours, it start to reach the iron. Paint or spray might do it too, but I never tried. Rinse with plenty water. Dry. And then the wire brush. Where I live, we can buy a special powder, called something like, iron oxide black. Perfect for painting a old stove. Watch out with the hydrochloric acid, protect your eyes and skin 😉

There is an area in south west Victoria ( Australia) that has many place names that are Scottish ( like Dunkeld, Dundonnell and Balmoral) and when I see where you are I understand why the Scot’s that moved there named the towering craggy hills after the home country. It is just breathtaking and would have felt familiar to them

Hi Scott for the midges when I was up in the Highlands they swore by Skin Soft by Avon in spray bottles and sold them at reception. The hotel was directly in front about the same distance to a loch too. Look into it. Videos are getting better, thanks.

Katie, you have your work cut out for you taking the rust off the old stove, but it's going to be beautiful. I've been doing the same thing this week, although it's an old table I'm working on. And I think you're probably right about the interesting stone - my guess would be the weight to hold down the thatch, although it's small for that compared to the photos of them I've seen. All the net weights are probably out there in the bay. I think you must live in the most beautiful place on earth..... Be well.

It's in the back of my mind that I have to keep working at it so it's in place ASAP; it'll start to get colder this month. I'm going to take the worst of the rust off, then try vinegar and WD40 to get it in shape! Hinges are a bit knackered, but it's all we have to hand, so it needs used!

Yes, we're the only two residents. But all the islands were supplied with electric and had basic sewage installed in the last century, pretty much whether they liked it or not in some cases!
