Just as an aside, and you probably already know this, but if you want to build soil to grow fruit and veg, then seaweed can be used as an additive to make fantastic compost... I only mention it as you seem to have ample supplies of the stuff! 🌱

Hi. I’m watching from NZ and enjoying the videos so much. We travelled in Scotland in 2019 and loved it, both of us having ancestry connections. I too am a great lover of trees and have realized my dream of planting a woodland on our piece of land near a country town. I saw the faces on your special tree before you mentioned it, as I have similar faces on some of my trees. Maybe the seaweed could be harvested and when washed by the rain, could be used to nurture a garden. Best wishes for all your endeavours, Trillian.xx

I so appreciate all the views of the bay at different times of day and in different weather. I'll bet you never tire of watching it. Both my sister and I have a strong affinity for Scotland, and suspect we have some Scottish heritage, but have never delved deep enough to prove it. Your landscape never fails to send chills up my spine..... I also love the subtle bits of humor, like the pith helmet, and Scott's amusement with what he sees in the trees. How wonderful that former occupants of the house contacted you - what a wealth of information they will be! Best wishes to you both.

I’m all for spreading the topics out to keep the interest, but I did find myself screaming “stay with collecting the water and explain why” “back to the wall for the fourth time???? Please, just show me!!!” Please please, don’t take this as a criticism, it’s just how it felt for me on this occasion! Bring on the next chill out video…

Hello! I’ve just discovered your channel. My ancestry is Scottish thru and thru (both sides of my family). And I deal in vintage too! So I am excited to watch! My questions… 1. How are you getting power for lighting etc.? 2. Do you go to the mainland once a week by boat for groceries etc and have a car parked on the mainland? 3. Are you still selling antiques somehow? Super curious to learn more…no need to respond but just thought you might find the questions helpful with your filming. Good luck! I’ll be watching :)

There was electricity installed over to most of these islands way back in the 60s; the cables come over the narrow channel where we cross over from the mainland. We do indeed go over to the mainland about once a week to collect our food delivery which comes from the nearest big town. There are answers to most of the questions we're asked both in the podcasts we've put out, and peppered throughout the episodes themselves. Hopefully, you'll enjoy watching them to find out! 🤍🤗 Kx

Well done guys, definitely on the right track. Original construction technology relied on a number of key elements: sound roofing, good external drainage, air circulation, thick walls, small doors and windows, and a heat source in each room to maintain temperature stability. Water shedding and wicking is also important but only if the the key elements are in place. Drafts are the final issue, but difficult to resolve without the above being completed, and questionable in light of the above. A balanced could be no drafts overnight, air the structure during the day. This may require insect screens on the windows 🙁 I hope your main living areas are within the original stone structure, as additions of lesser materials can be a real pain under winter conditions, stealing heat and allowing moisture to accumulate. On a more brighter note, love the scenery and wildlife footage, have you named the deer yet, or are they still he and she. Lots of history to understand, the stonework to the mooring point is beautiful, what a job that would have been back in the day. Best wishes

Great advice, and well-received. We do notice a difference to the humidity inside already, having just fixed the guttering. Still need to fix a drainage trench at the back (soon). Sound roof. Fireplaces will be going like the clappers...hopefully, we'll have a functioning building before too long. We haven't named the deer yet, but we notice which one the matriarch is! All the best to you , too.

In my opinion, you should look into having a tree surgeon come and help you plan for the growth and care of this forest. If you can’t afford to pay them to do the work, or even would rather just do it yourself, having a professional in forest care and management come and look at what needs to be done to maintain healthy growth of the trees is, I feel, a good and proper way to productively help both yourselves (with firewood and accessibility) and the island. I thought of this, as I watch another KZbinr that is rebuilding a derelict chateau in France, and a friend of his is a tree surgeon and is helping him with the tree-scapes. He explains why he does what he does and it’s all to help the forest stay healthy and happy.

Interestingly, we were talking not too long back about regenerating and replanting, but were specifically thinking of Scots pine; clearing some firs and repopulating with native pine. The birds love them and it'd bring in rare species like the Crossbill.

I live off grid same as u guys. It would be nice to live in the original stone barn and pretty as well. But if u plan on heating the place efficiently insulating now whilst u have access and are able to. Will save u money and time and energy. In the long run. Our stone barn is a wee bit bigger and heated by wood from our woodland. We cook and heat and get hot water from our range. We get thru 16m2 a year. A lot of work. If u use electric heating that’s going to be expensive or oil and wood which u have is do able but a lot of work. If u insulate those costs and efforts shrinks and will stay small. Have a long hard think.

I’m really enjoying your videos, I’m also a huge lord of the rings fan. Just to give some constructive feedback. When you start filming a segment, like pulling the old walls down, it would be good to see more of that in one go rather than in little bits at a time, then move on to another point of interest. On another point, if you could try to get some microphones for when you’re talking to the camera that would make hearing the audio much easier.

Are the trees on the island all native species or are they mostly Victorian plantations of exotics?
@TheScottishIsle
@TheScottishIsle Жыл бұрын
Mostly wild Scots pine, cedar, fir, oak. A few wild-cards here and there, but generally native. Kx

Check your pets regularly for ticks and lice. Deer get ticks very easily and can speard them all over the place. The deer don't even need to be in direct contact with other animals.

Sheep are checked daily for ticks. Brie suffers much worse from them than Crowdie (small Shetland).

Morrisons deliver to the mainland every week. You can see us collecting this in a different episode. We also have small local shops several miles away. Car is left on the mainland. We use small boats across the sea to get to it.
