After suffering a spinal cord injury and becoming a quadriplegic, it can be difficult to figure out how to live in your situation and you often feel like you are the only one who is going through whatever situation you are in. Since becoming paralyzed, I’ve found it easier to cope with my situation by reading books written by other people living with disabilities because they helped me relate to others and realize I'm not alone. In this video, I tell you about my favorite books that I have read since becoming a quadriplegic that I have found helpful or inspiring!
What are your most inspiring or favorite books that you have read and why?

Just so people know a softcover copy of William A Miller's Book 'Life Can Still Be Good' is available online through Seahill Press. Some of the proceeds go toward helping his long-time friend and fellow quadriplegic Rhonda Reese stay out of a nursing home and live life in her own home/community. I'm able-bodied and didn't know Bill but really recommend this book, especially the chapter on Faith, Love, and Happiness. Love the little moments of humour as well. It's just over one year since Bill passed and he is still helping others, much as he did in life. "No worries" everyone 🙂

Great book review, Mason! I can see you doing great things for the disability community, heck, for all people, for that matter. You seem to be quite gifted and have a powerful positive attitude. I'd buy your book in a minute, provided that I could get an autographed copy. Thanks again, Mason, and God bless you and your family!

I have also been thinking about writing a book and including using artwork as a way of coping with the disease syringomyelia and also the struggle with pain I deal with which adds to the already complicated life of a person who has a SCI and a TBI

One book you missed is 'The other side of the Mountain'...there was also a movie based on the book. It's a true story about a ski racing champion, Jill Kinmont, who fell and became a quad. My most inspired book was 'Up and Running'...about Andrew Bateson, a kid in Providence, RI who had meningitis and lost both his legs. I remember one part of the book, he kept going by some building and asking his mom to stop and go get his legs back. I think she found an alternate way to go to where ever and not let Andrew see that building😂. He recently became an EMT and no one knew he was an amputee until AFTER he was hired and went into work one day in shorts.

I have read Melissa’s book last week and I am reading Bill’s book now. I like look both ways by Brooke Ellison . I like it because it gave me an academic role model. She passed away recently. We are almost exactly the same age, but I am not ventilated dependent.

KZbin fed this link, knowing my interests, here in the Australian Capital Territory. Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, 40 years ago, when I was a Health Accreditation Surveyor, as part of my employment with our Australian Quadriplegic Association. The books and links are the usual WASP (white Anglo-Saxon Protestant) survivor stories. Good to see some women are able to be noticed as well. It is up to minority people, like myself, to try to document our own survivor stories. Coloured, LGBTQIA? Readers & viewers comments wonder which medical impairments are better or worse than spinal cord damage, as a child, or later in life. It seems that most here know that Brain Injury is far more serious than just spinal damage. Similar reading and viewing lists are not yet existing for Traumatic Brain Injury? Just wondering. It has been many years since my employment was involved with the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981).

@@masonx54will do...Osteomyelitis is NOT your friend...but I am a survivor. I lost my hip and leg and the other leg is in question...but honestly, I feel so much better, I doubt I'll miss either of them. I feel bad for the right one and wonder if it felt anything as far as it was constantly broken and infected. It gave me a lot of good years...but at least I'm still going.

@@masonx54 ya especially in this day and age where everyone is a couch potato, so much stuff automated, we hardly do anything physical. It's like we hardly need our bodies for anything. But as for vision, boy do we use our eyes. Whether it's for tv, computer, smartphone, outdoors. There's no denying it, vision is way more important for pretty much everyone I'll bet
