As someone older, I remember in high school having Home Economics, Auto Woodworking classes, which unfortunately aren't taught anymore, which is such a shame. Your kids are lucky to have you teaching them so much. Most kids now are lost on Cooking, basic Auto Shop, and even basic Woodworking. I was fortunate enough to be raised in the South during a time when we were raught all of those things at home. Cooking wasn't limited to the girls and Auto shop, and Woodworking wasn't limited to the boys. So I got to learn the basics on all three and set free to use my imagination. You're doing a great job as a Dad, and you definitely have your job cut out for you on this competition because the boys did a great job.

I've been teaching for 35 years and the only school I taught in that didn't teach these things was a private k - 10 school. I've even done a storage shed build in one of my geometry classes to answer the age old question of , "when am I ever going to use this?"
@shoans3897

I too had these classes! I loved it (except for drafting, no on the math, lol) we even did electrical making lamps out of liquor bottles, ( I know def can’t do that now) Later I made a doll lamp and a stuffed animal lamp for my cousins. Now as a 55 yr old female, just now getting into woodworking I love it, hubby not so much as I’m invading his shop.

I used to love woodworking until I moved to Texas and all the contractors out here don’t care about anything and they lie and try to shortcut everything and they just don’t care enough to do everything right and want everything done as good as I want it done so it’s just a crappy situation working for these clowns and I can’t take a risk of going out on my own right now cause of other variables but eventually I will and I will be able to do good work on my own and will get back to loving what I do. Maybe a side hustle like this will get me back into it

I've been selling squirrel peanut feeders in my Etsy shop all summer. I've sold 28 of them since May. I have a bird feeder that has sold really well this month after only selling 2-3 the last 3 months. I added some jack o' lanterns to my shop last month and they're already outperforming the squirrel feeder over the last 30 days. Everything is made from fence pickets. Smalls, baby!

I like that picnic table you could use for a condiment holder to set in the center of your table. The swinging seat is so quaint it reminds me of simmer days out on the porch but for squirrels. Like all the ideas you and your children give.

Well, minus the center screw, my grandson would want a mini-swing of his own. I might have to upscale it a little bit as he's turning 5. I love your video's and your kids are bringing some skills to the game for sure! In a 21st century world where most college graduates can't even balance a checkbook or make change for a purchase, it's nice to see kids picking up very useful life skills (like they actually used to teach, but I'm showing my age). Great that you are donating any plan sales to the appropriate kid designer (I will pick up both). Another great video, thanks for sharing.

for the swing you say 10" boards for seat frame and 10" for seat boards but seat boards are suppose to hang over by 1" on both sides. not sure which one is correct. Either seat frame should be 8" or seat boards should be 12"

"Crum Snatchers" is fantastic! I think you're a little off on the lengths of the seat slates. You said the base is 10" long and the seat slates are 10". This doesn't leave an overhang. I don't think the verticle back supports are 10" either. I haven't looked at the plans yet.

As someone who had not thought of using a fence picket as a building supply (love the idea)... how thick are they, typically? From eyeballing as you hold up the pieces, I would guess between a half to three quarters of an inch? I ask because I had been looking at trying something like this to use with my laser cutter... and I'd need to figure out how many layers I might need, at least for the support pieces. Also, as a possible add-on: The area I live is fairly treeless, so to get my squirrel fix I wind up going to one of several local parks. After watching one poor squirrel trying to get a drink from a sidewalk puddle, I started adding a few small cups for water to my "squirrel kit" (a pencil box with peanuts, sunflower seeds, and other treats). You could just place one on the table, or add velcro to both table and cup, but my thought had been to cut a hole in the table that the cup could drop into, and use a cup/container that has a lid. In addition to not needing a separate bottle to carry the water (in my case), these containers usually have a lip that would also keep them from falling through the hole.

Hi matt, let me first say I really enjoy your post on KZbin and have used your project several times, but I noticed on the one showing the squirrel feeder swing you made a little verbal boo boo that I didn't realize until after I cut all the parts from writing down the parts list of what you were saying... Oops...lol When you gave the length for the bench slats you said it was 10 in and when you mounted them on your seat frame there should be an inch overhang on each end Well Matt that's a little tough to do when the front of your seat frame is 10 So after cutting out the parts list and I began assembly I realized something was up Somebody, without naming names, should have said 12 for the seat slats... I wonder who that was...lol No worries it all worked out great I was just wondering if you've ever noticed that in the video Keep doing what you do brother cuz you do it Thanks for sharing your knowledge and ideas God Bless

I make the swing, but I leave the middle of the seat open and put screen wire underneath and it's a bird feeder swing

Great video. I had to put my seat bracket 2 inches from the bottom instead of 1 and an eighth for the 2 slats to fit foe the seats. Just me?

I looked through all your links and lists. Can't find a link for the little stop ruler you used in this video. I'm not sure of the name of it. It looks 6" and has the red stops on it. Do you have a link for that one, please? GREAT video! Thank you!

I started to make this, but I feel like my legs are too short so I didn’t make this clear my doing this right so it needs to be 8 inches long from tip to tip right so once I cut both of the 45° it should point to Longpoint be 8 inches long

I cut these right to your specs.....i cannot put the bottom brace on 1 1/8' from the bottom, and have a 2 3/8" overhang. Also, the top support, I cannot put it level with the top, and have a 1" overhang......... This a great project.. I just must be doing something wrong...

Great project. I'm new to woodworking and have a dumb question. For most of your "smalls" videos it seems you normally use 1 inch screws. Are these #6 size? Thanks

If the seat boards are 10", how can they overhang 1" on each side with a frame that is 10x7"? Anyways great ideas and vid. Don't like the screws on the bench. Brad nails and glue will do just fine!
