What a great value! I would feel comfortable going into the woods with one of these knives, though I would attach a fero rod to the sheath with a ranger band. These knives are a great buy. It proves you don't have to pay a lot for a very functional knife. Thanks Aaron!

I own the Scandi grind model. I love the knife and no issues so far. Stays sharp a long time…. I do agree wit you on the Lanyard attachment point. I have x large hands and I feel that metal part Quite often.

Great timing with this review. I've had my eye on this exact knife for the last week because I'm interested in getting a full tang, budget scandi. It's down to Odenwolf, the Flissa 9, or the Condor Terrasaur. I'm leaning towards the Odenwolf. 👍🏻

Awesome reviews as always, brother! I do not have any odenwolf knives yet, but I have recently tried out a few knives from Eafengrow, and I have been pleasantly surprised by the toughness, sheaths, and the fit and finish for sub $100, even sub $50 knives. It's fun to get a decent knife at a budget price now and then, even if it is made in China. Hopefully it will force some US makers to step up their game for knives at more affordable prices. Keep up the great work friend!

I have both and they are both great, but you are correct about the lanyard hole area. They really screwed that up, it should have been solid all the way around with a typical lanyard hole, it's uncomfortable. Be careful on amazon, I ordered the D2 and they sent me the 440C. For the price I would definitely buy more. I am actually going to wait a bit and then order the flat ground one again to see if I get a D2 this time. On the flat version I had to reprofile the edge to get it perfect, but the scandi version came perfectly ground.

I have one of the early ones in 440c. Mine is a scandi grind. I don't like the thin tip but other then that its a ok knife. I don't use it enough to give a valuable opinion. I bought it because I like the sheath and it was $25 total shipped. Cheap enough for me to keep for a backup to my backup. Lol

yeah I picked up one of the cheaper 440C models, realized the sheath had that dangler attachment that I could use for other knives, and then I ended up buying a few more just to have extra danglers. LOL I mean, it's really hard to find a decent dangler attachment like that on the aftermarket; and if you can find one, they almost always cost more than the entire Odenwolf knife and sheath package. No-brainer.

Great review! Congrats. I've been gravitating around the SRK compact, but the weak tip of the the blade was holding me back. Then I saw your video while looking for reviews on Odenwolf knives and since I plan on carry just one knife in the outdoors, I'll take the thoughest: the scandi grind one. Love the design, the sheath, the hande with no screws and the aesthetics. And for that price? It's a no brainer.

I love these knives but that exposed laynard hurrrrts on larger paws. I wrapped some paradord back there tied a knot and burned it closed and its good now.

man its been a little while but great to see this channel going well! i brought the BK9 because your review and still going amazing after 7yrs best reviews! no BS strait to exactly the what the knife or product is and detailed specs and what it should do, here in NZ a lot of these products are 2-3x the value you say in NZD to get them here so ensuring a good buy is paramount as a comparison, for reference when i brought my BK9 you referenced them to being under 100$ i paid 250NZD to buy 1 now is 350NZD, i would like to buy a Esee Junglas (480NZD) but price to use tells me no haha even the smller ESEEs here are 3-450NZD

I have both of those models, and I’ve beat the hell out of them and both have held up well. I have not done a tip test with the full flat though, and I don’t plan on it after this video,ha. Nice review!

I have both of these and like them, but my favorite things from Odenwolf are the Sowcatcher models. Pretty impressive daggers at a decent price. The single-edged one surprised me, it's a good rendition of a classic pigsticker. Do I actually need these kinds of knives in my life? No, and hopefully that continues to be true. But they are cool to have around! It's hard to find simple, functional, nice large daggers at a decent price these days.

Fine video Sir. If I might offer a cheap fix for the lanyard hole. I found it obtrusive also. I wrapped the steel with cotton cord, then epoxied the cord.... micarta wrapped. Problem solved. Looks acceptable also. Hope this helps.

They also have a sabre ground model. You might like that one for the extra full thickness spine on half of the knife. It also has a tip design that is much tougher looking- kind of similar to the strongarm tip. The sabre ground model also comes in 440C on the 1 version and D2 on 2 and 3 versions. It also has a fun harpoon blade style. I don't think harpoon really does anything, but it looks cool.

Aaron, Odenwolf makes their take on the Mora Eldris, the W-mini 2 which I own. The sheath on these is worth the cost of admission. You’ve convinced me to try the camp knife.

So I did a thing I bought the scandi Used it for my day to day work It got ever so slight chips on the edge I got pissed Put a convex grind on it Now it’s getting beaten around all day and not an issue

Mine has held up good full flat fut a few tin cans open with it and baton some wood it's still sharp altho I did put a better edge on it from factory was not what I wanted it to be sharpness but I got it shaving sharp and it has been ever since

I wish people would start making CPM D2 knives. The only companies I know of that have used it a bit are Protech, and Midgards Messer.

I don't own a scandi but I keep thinking I should. Whenever I look into it though I come to the conclusion that a flat grind fits my purposes better. I might just get that flat grind for the kitchen! Personally, every time I go out into the mountains I live in the Argentine Patagonian mountain range and I always carry the knife on my waist. I wouldn't hesitate despite it being more fragile. I stick with the flat bevel knife, given that 95% of my tasks are It is cutting the leather of an animal, processing food, perhaps sharpening a stake, I never subject a point to those jobs. But for the rest of the tasks the flat edge is more appreciated

I might actually pick up that scandi. I don't like scandis for any kind of camp, hunting, survival knife, I dislike Mora even more. But every once in a while, I will kill time whittling around the camp fire. For $35, I'd put that in my truck with my other backup gear. Also doesn't hurt since there's not a good 90 degree spine on most of my favorite knives. I need everyone to write MKC to tell them to make a legit bushcraft knife instead of just calling one of theirs a fieldcraft.

If you need an affordable all-around "beater" stainless steel that's solid in toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance, but will require more edge maintenance and is easy to hone or resharpen, AUS8 is the choice over D2. The affordable higher edge retention choice will be D2, if you're just doing a lot of cutting, slicing and carving. The tradeoff is less toughness, less corrosion resistance, and a little more time honing and sharpening, compared to AUS8.

I just don't think they're using D2 in those blades. D2 at 60Rc is not an especially tough blade steel and I'd expect to see chipping on the Scandi grind with that testing.

Prying sideways on a knife blade is always a bad idea and d2 isn't magical enough to withstand flat bar jobs at least this has been my experience. This said they are both pretty impressive. Good testing overall but I won't be prying arrows out of wood with mine but definitely my next purchase.

Say, if you’re interested, they also have a stubby version. Reminds me of that Mora stubby that was so hot about five years ago. Might take a look at that if you’re looking to review more of their stuff. Be forewarned! It comes with a little ferro-rod and striker on…. Waaaaaaaiiiiittt for it…. A NECK LANYARD! Mr. Neck knives suck. Actually it looks like it comes with BOTH a belt clip and ability to use it as a neck knife.

Not a problem, but what works better for kitchen tasks? I almost exclusively use scandi grinds, but I got the victorinox venture a while back and it is so much better for food prep

Scandi grinds are fine for general food prep, but lacks the geometry of full flat grinds for certain types of cuts/slices/techniques. This is why full flat grinds are THE most dominant geometry in kitchens of eateries around the world.

There are Moras that can do this all day, but they are not made of D2.😁On the upside, you can now take that blade and make a drop point out of it and see if it holds up better. lol

I don't understand the practical application of the tip test. I will never treat a knife in that manner. If it's stuck in material you would rock it forward and back to loosen the blade and free it. Not being critical just need a little explanation. Would you treat a high end blade you had purchased in such a manner? Love your videos, I just cringe when I see the tip test. Same as forged in fire clamping a blade in a vise and trying to bend or break it. Knives and long blades are not meant for such abuse. Imo

It tell's us what the heat-treat is like if it bends it's too soft if it snap's real easily it's too hard.

The point is that when a knife is designed as a hard use or outdoor blade, the quality of the steel and the heat treat matters... and it should matter. As improbable as it might seem, you just might find yourself in a situation where you need to ask more of your knife than normal or do things that it wasn't necessarily intended to do. It's important for people to do tests like this so that you know a knife's strengths and weaknesses.

you should do some videos on some traditional finnish leukus like the ahti leuku and the ones from woodsknife. i got an ahti 145 and they use laurin metalli blades in 80crv and i’m loving it so far. the damn thing literally just GLIDES through wood.

For flat grind, I preffer my Spyderco Mule. I don't need bigger flat grinded knife. Nice performance for scandi version 🤌
