My grandson was getting married and it was a FORMAL dress occasion. I bought a pant suit with sequins on the top and thought “I will never wear this again!” I finally returned it and bought a satin blouse which I wore with black dress pants and black heals and felt very comfortable in this outfit. And I will definitely wear that outfit again to a nice dinner or party.

on a slightly related note: you mentioned (very accurately imo) that donating should always be the last option, and that got me thinking about discarding items. I see quite a lot of people being quite flippant about "just donating" it as a sustainable way to purge, even though most donated clothes end up in landfill, and I slightly struggle with guilt when letting things go because of this. I'd love to see a video on ideas on how to sustainably deal with the items you want to let go?

@lisamcdonagh45182 жыл бұрын
There are lots of options. If it's kids clothes a lot of daycares will accept used clothing for kids who have accidents. For adults, you have consignment, Poshmark, you can donate to a women's shelter or sometimes hospitals will take them for patients that may need support (the mental hospital in our city accepts clothing and creates a free shop for patients to go and get some clean "new" clothes).. you can do a clothing swap with neighbors... Lots of options

I rehome stuff to specific people. I gave a basket full of assorted items: dresses tops and sweaters to a young mom who hasn’t got a lot of excess money. She was delighted and I picked out stuff I thought she would wear. I used to take my stuff to work and my colleagues would choose anything they wanted. I don’t just landfill it or give it to places that will throw it away. I also make sure that the things I rehome are in good repair. I don’t mind seeing my clothes on others and I do lend items for occasions or travel. I have a dress that has been everywhere!

I love your message that the classics should be YOUR classics. The traditional list of classic items and cuts is NOT my style. But some pieces can work if I choose carefully: for instance, I will hardly ever choose to wear a blazer if it doesn't have stretch. Even a jacket or coat must allow ease of movement. I've had to relinquish many blazers over the years because they were too stiff or cut wrong. Knowing what feels best on my body is so empowering. 😊

An addition, if you live in a small space. I've found that using garment bag's helps to separate the one-off pieces from the capsule workhorse pieces.

It’s funny because people think that oh I can’t wear that I wore that to the last party. Really nobody remembers what you wore unless it was just really outstanding. I realize this year‘s ago. I have a simple V-neck longsleeve velvet burgundy dress that I like to wear at Christmas. I’ve had it for at least 10 years. It still looks great and it’s beautiful simple and classic. Nobody remembers it but I’ve got several photos of me in that same dress.

I had a wedding to go to recently and struggled to find something to wear. It seemed ridiculous to spend a large amount on one outfit I didn’t really like and would never wear again. I had the same inspiration to invest in separates I would wear again. I went to the wedding in a skirt I already owned and an elevated but simple top I can wear with multiple options. I felt great at the wedding as the outfit was really me! I had a lot of compliments too :)

Your point about finding the classic closet essentials that work for you hit home so hard. No matter how much I’ve tried, blazers never felt comfortable to me - on my body or style wise. Cardigans filled that ‘outer layer’ gap blazers vacated, matching my three words before I defined them. Not to feed into the stereotype, but this librarian loves a cosy cardigan. It feels the energy of each piece matches mine.

Hey Alyssa, so I still haven't figured out my three words. I was watching another KZbin video, I can't remember who it was some random one, but something fun that I've been doing is, instead of thinking of your three words when you're getting dressed. You stand in front of your closet and you say to yourself. How do I want to feel today? Say you want to say cozy and casual or casual and classy or funky and fresh lol then you pick pieces, that reflect those two things and put them together. It's been so fun to experiment with! You should give it a try!

Such practical and useful tips Alyssa! I do like occasion wear but keep them all together in one back section of my closet and only go there when I need them. And I also pull pieces that no longer fit me (too tight) but are high quality classic pieces and hang them in a garment box in the basement. And occasionally my adult daughter will browse and ‘shop’ for herself! I don’t like pulling out something from my closet that no longer fits, it’s just frustrating! Another great video!

🔨 You nailed it with your comprehensive list of challenges, & how they can make your overall wardobe disjointed. 🤗 Probably spent a lifetime focused on Occasion Dressing. 🤔Maybe not exclusively for 💲expensive special social outings as you've detailed here, but def sourced outfits with precise activities in mind. Clothing specifically ear marked for corporate work, dates, church, casual play, lounging, sport, etc. Know my closet still doesn't have 💯% cohesion, but it's improving thanks to fashion influencers like yourself who are helping me refine my overall style. Training me how to maximize cost per wear by mixing high/low pieces from my different categories in more creative ways. Choosing clothing that will serve a wider variety of purposes. 😉Never more appreciative to have had extra space to store clothing. Always found that seasonal rotation is a smart way to freshen my closet. ⏳️Plus, as an hourglass, it's been tricky to find clothing that fits my extreme proportions w/o add'l tailoring. So I often bought duplicates in different colors. Having fluctuated ⬆️up & down⬇️ in weight later in life, I've never been so grateful to have retained both smaller & larger sized clothing. It allowed me to shop my closet, esp. helpful in financially lean times too. 😁Truly thankful to have found style tricks to reduce larger items when needed too. I wouldn't deliberately shop oversized, but I don't mind them. Once I feel confident about my weight stability & maintenance, I'll either get some of the higher quality things tailored or pass them on. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

The occasion wear and classic pieces are the things that get me. They often don't fit my style and it's taken me a while to learn to filter it through my own style and find "my" own twist on a piece. For instance, I really don't do white trainers or jeans, but somehow grey trainers or jeans feel just fine.

@That Girl Netty The character Scarlett O'Hara in classic movie 'Gone With The Wind'. The description of turning curtain fabric into a gown was far more creative and fun in the book. Of course, Julie Andrews in 'The Sound of Music' had matching play outfits made for the Von Trapp children from patterned curtain fabric. Their father was slightly appalled! Poor darlings only had best clothes - nothing to ride bikes or horse around in.

This was fun, thank you. My problem (not really) is I have these fantasy images of myself when I travel (i.e. Greece? A long billowy dramatic dress for a photo. Mexico? Beige and bright colours shorts and tops and hats i don't wear at home...). Quite often they don't translate well when I get back home and barely wear them again... OR (2) I think I'm clever with a small travel wardrobe but when i get there the atmosphere or weather is different than i expected and i only have a couple of things that are "appropriate" and i have to "make do" (maybe shop there, which is fun too) when I expected that i killed it (ouch, my poor ego). 😄

I use My Closet. I find it useful to record outfits that work well, and outfits that work in theory, but not when I put them on. Also, by recording outfits worn in the calendar I can see which I really wear, and remind myself to try other combinations. I keep various sections for what is stored, and what I need to review and get rid of. It's easier working visually than doing it on a spreadsheet or paper, just time consuming photographing everything at the beginning.
