For YEARS I tried to find the awesome crisp white shirt with zero luck and a lot of wasted money. Then one day I found out I should have been checking out baby blue linen shirts instead. So according to my personal experience, I’d tell you to reconsider the color as well and not just texture and silhouette

This was very helpful. I often struggle over whether to buy a new blazer or a turtleneck or "insert basic wardrobe item here", but I continually remind myself that I have never liked turtlenecks, look terrible in crew neck tees, and if it is cold enough to wear a blazer, I will wear a jacket or cardigan. Yet I am always tempted by the siren sound of versatile "stylish" basics.

💯 agree that you need to be true to your personal style. We are all unique and wear what is truly you rather than try to wear that it's really you but because it's looking nice on someone else you think you should wear it as well.

Recently YT recommended a new YTuber to me. So I watched, they stated just about everything I wear is out of date and I should throw it out, "get rid of it"!! Included in this video were v neck tops; skinny jeans; cigarette pants; flares; ballet flats; flat soled knee length boots; loafers; maxi and midi skirts/dresses and the list went on 😳 Needless to say they had a small following (a few thousand subscribers). However, then another popped up as a recommendation, who has over 1 million subscribers, doing almost the exact same thing! After watching these two videos I could certainly understand why people do get completely confused about what they 'should' be wearing or have in their wardrobe...then there is Alyssa, who makes everything come back into focus. You truly are a breath of fresh air, no more wandering into the world of trend driven YT for me! No matter how many subscribers they do or don't have. Thank you for being so grounded and realistic Alyssa and consistently encouraging us to shop our closet and experiment with what we already have and remain mindful when adding to our wardrobe 😊💗

I just don’t take most fashion YTs seriously, they have no art, fashion or image training and just think their own style is best for everyone. For example, I’m sick of flat-chested teenagers telling me that wrap dresses will flatter my large bust, there is never enough fabric in them to cover a real bust like mi e, they know nothing.🙂

Everybody who says to get rid of classic pieces like cigarette pants, ballet flats, flat soled knee-length boots; loafers; maxi and midi skirts/dresses, etc, clearly, doesn't know what they are talking about. I mean, only somebody very young and/or not aware of how fashion like to repeat itself and how vintage is getting more and more popular, would say nonsense like that. Those naive souls following such advices will next season find themselves with clothes that they look obsolete, wondering why they have nothing to wear and why they are always short on money. And let's not think about the piles of waste they produce every year.

@@elalogar7340 Sorry to say it was a woman who stated she was a personal stylist, she was in her early 60s. If it were some teen YTuber I wouldn't have been shocked or commented here. She was making her recommendations for "mature women" her words not mine. I thought it was ridiculous too.

@@kimberlyperrotis8962 I don't listen or follow this advice either but some do. If we are on YT watching content there will of course be differing opinions, neither were young women or teenagers hence why I watched. Some people will listen, think of the waste this nonsense advice produces. If we were completely satisfied with our choices/knowledge maybe we wouldn't be here watching either, personally I think Alyssa is unique.

@@katem3961 Really? That's even worse. There are some well known personal stylists who have this kind of narrative, but only because their clients are celebrities. I doubt any of those would go on YT and sell the same narrative to the masses. But if they did, I would think: "They don't know what they are talking about.", close the video and marked so it wouldn't be shown in my feeds again.

Thank you so much for this. After several years of following all the style advice in order to find/create my own style, I have slowly begun to admit that I personally don't like or feel comfortable in a crisp white button up shirt. I was going to scrap the idea altogether, until I realized that I love my soft, drapey, denim-look shirt, and I get compliments all the time on it. And now here you are validating my idea that I can choose a buttoned shirt that suits me, not just the classic essential!

Love your videos, Alyssa. I’m a fan of blazers and moto jackets, but I’ve stopped buying button downs because I don’t wear them. They look wonderful on you and a lot of women, but I just don’t like them on me. I’m also completely over the oversized blazer. That was the style in the 80s, but one of the great things about getting older is that I have the confidence to embrace or reject trends. Yes, it’s so game-changing to expand upon what our version of an “essential” is and customize it to our own needs! For example, I’m short and narrow with sharpness in my frame & super structured and tailored tops and jackets feel so harmonious on me. My girlfriend, on the other hand, is taller with broad shoulders and she looks so chic and elegant with flowier unconstructed silhouettes that would just make me feel sloppy!

I love how you emphasize finding your own *personal* essentials - for me that definitely does NOT include a button up shirt in any shape, form, size, material, or color. I’ve tried 10,000 of them and never, ever feel happy in the silhouette. Part of finding your essentials is letting GO of a whole category even when it’s on ALL the essential lists!!! 😆 Some of my personal essentials are striped tops, pea coats, crossbody bags, and ballerina flats ❤

You know watching this video today was so timely, I have been editing my closet because as much as I get " holding onto classic pieces" because fashion is cyclical... Uhm.. the reality is I don't wear half of my closet. I live in a desert climate and I don't need multiple outerwear. So. I got rid of several turtlenecks, and boots . I did keep some of course for those special occasions but it feels really great to pare things down.

Thanks for talking about the fabric of button-down shirts. I'm petite and a bit busty, and stiffer fabrics do not work on me. But also, drapey fabrics aren't good because they emphasize my chest. What I really want is to find that smooth, light-weight menswear cotton, soft but not drapey. With my size challenges, I have to try things on, not order online, and there aren't a lot of shopping opportunities around me. Challenges all around! :)

Alyssa, I thank you so much for showing not only different body types but also ages when you so the example photos. I'm over 60 but still love looking chic, and I continue to learn when it comes to fashion. This was a wonderful video as you broaden the categories and take the essentials out of the expected. The button up shirt part was especially enlightening. I love the idea and look of a crisp white shirt but actually hardly ever reach for it, daunted by the ironing and potential for staining. Instead, I live in my loose linen shirts in summer. Both are light blue, one icy, the other less so, and I'm obsessed with them. So there it is, the difference: they drape loosely, aren't precious (i.e. I'm totally fine when therm looking wrinkly) and make me feel cool. I recently thrifted a tencel blouse for shoulder seasons and also own a Lyocell denim shirt I frequently wear. Sooooo, long story short, I think I may have to let go of my fantasy self and declutter those 2 crisp shirts still hanging in my closet. "What if" makes it hard to do, but it may be time....Thanks for helping me through that thought process, and sorry for the long, rambling message. 😊❤

I think the trick about interpreting essentials for me has been not to take things too literally - so a crisp white button down is a crisp white pop over shirt with a mandarin collar. But generally I'm not a button down kind of girl, a granddad collar, is more my thing, and usually in any other colour than white. A blazer is something I wear, but being petite I have to be careful, so I tend to go for cropped styles, and never oversize. My denim choices are changeable, but a mid to dark tone straight leg is a classic for me.

Fantastic, informative video. I had that same love/hate relationship that you described with button-ups, and the advice on varying the type of fabric and cut is spot on. I would also suggest varying the collar style. Turns out that the traditional stand-up collar wasn't comfortable for me, so I started getting shirts with band collars or a lay-flat lapel type of collar and it made all the difference. Shawl style collars/lapels work as well. Great advice all around - I love this type of video!

💯% appreciated your insights on button up shirts. The softer, drapier button up shirts definitely get considerably more use in my closet. Will even drag out my two LS chambray shirts in Winter, but I rarely button them. Stopped buying the classic kind that would be ignored. 🤗Although I adopted 4 high quality, but lightweight dress shirts from a beau who lost weight. I like to knot the two slightly silkier solid shirts open over a coordinating tank top or slip dress. However, I now prefer to wrap & tuck the two cotton plaid ones in a solid skirt or trouser. 😉Something got lost in translation w/the blazer. 📷 Maybe I needed more photos to illustrate your point. While it's possible to swap a classic blazer for my oversized bomber, that option doesn't seem any lighter as a layer 🥵. Do love the look of a classic ❤️ blazer or leather jacket〰️esp. with a hoodie layered underneath a slightly larger one. ☀️Just tend to bake🔥 in blazers outside for the majority of the year. 👖Swap jeans for jeans!? The cut, color, or silhouette will not fix what ails me about them🤣. Only fabric weight can make a difference. Just find the majority of denim to be far too hot & structured to suit me nowadays. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

Now I wear flannel plaid shirts that hide dirt and stain better. I have a lot of blazers and 2-piece pant or skirt suits but I don’t wear any now because I am retired. I haven’t touched my leather outerwear for over 5 years (slowly selling them). Now I wear a thin poly filled puffer or puffer waist because it is weightless and easy wash and dry.

I adore a silk button-front shirt, especially with long sleeves for year-round wear. I just got beautiful safari-style (two chest pockets and epaulettes) ones, one in beige and one in khaki, from Lily Silk, they have a beautiful suede-like nearly matte finish. (I also got the dresses in the same style and colors). I prefer these more casual finishes/weaves and styles than shiny charmeuse ones with fancy details, which feel a bit formal. Silk is so comfortable and drapey and doesn’t need ironing, so I wear these much more than my cotton ones, which need a ton of ironing to look decent. Once one starts wearing silk, other fabrics feel annoying, silk is addictive!

Jeans, denim jackets and black leather moto jackets are on every “wardrobe essentials list”, but I never wear any of them. My essentials are so different, blazers, silk skirts, tops, dresses and scarves, and good leather footwear. My lifestyle allows me to wear luxury fabrics without worry, so I indulge in them for daily wear, why not? The supreme comfort of silk is essential for my sensitive skin. I know many women wear jeans daily, all over the world, but I never did, I loathe denim. I never found a pair of women’s jeans that fit my straightish figure reasonably well or were reasonably comfortable, so I just got one pair of men’s, in case I have to walk in brushy areas or something, but I doubt I’ll ever wear them, so I only spent $21 on them, on sale at H&M. I’m sick of wasting so much money and time trying to find denim that works for me, just because everyone else wears them. I’ll stick to my silk cargo pants and joggers, and skirts.

The oversized shirt style is also great for those with wider mid body or curvy structure, especially when longer and can be styled with leggings or slim pair of pants/ denim! Also I have done away with the tucking because that works better for slim women. Adding a belt can polish up an untucked shirt with a pair of black tight jeans or leggings. My style, my rules! More comfortable I am, more confident and stylish I feel.

Thank you for emphasizing this idea--took me awhile to realize I had "permission" not to have some of these well-touted essentials. One thing that worked for me: finding button down shirts in a t-shirt/knit fabric. JCrew had some great ones in the mens' section for awhile (women's too, but those were a polyester blend I didn't care for). I didn't realize that option even existed! Also love them in slightly oversized linen. I did indeed spring for the white POMP Tailor shirt, but it feels less like me.

I found a great one 109% organic cotton knit one at Eileen Fisher about five years ago. It was around $200, but is worth having the comfort of a tee with the button-front shirt look. I hope they bring them back, I bought mine a bit too large, I later discovered they recommend always sizing down one size. I just got my dream white hoodie from them, 100 organic cotton, I have been searching for a polyester-free one for at least a decade. It’s cropped to about the hip bone, too, which I love, most tops are ridiculously long on me.

I love the structure of a classic-fit blazer, I always feel frumpy in cardigans, except for the new waist-length ones. The combination of long length and no structure in cardigans is dowdy.

This was so insightful. I really don’t like blazers if any kinds but am having quite a time finding a “sweater” blazer/jacket that would hit me at the hip length because I’m only 5ft tall. If you have any suggestions as to where I should shop to find i e, I’d be most appreciative. Thanks!

I always wondered why I loved the look and idea of button down shirts but never felt they worked on me. It's because my words are romantic, classic, & comfortable and traditional button downs are not romantic or comfortable for me. Now I am going to look for a nice silk button down because I feel like the soft fabric is more comfortable and romantic for me.

💯 agree that you need to be true to your personal style. We are all unique and wear what is truly you rather than try to wear that it's really you but because it's looking nice on someone else you think you should wear it as well.

I wear some wider leg jeans, most of which I have had for many years, but also some skinny jeans because they are so practical for wearing with wellies for a dog walk. 🐕 I think you just need to do what makes you happy, suits you and works with your lifestyle.

One "basic" that I never wear is the "classic white t shirt". It doesn't matter what I do, it's never flattering to my shape and style, and I only wear them as leisure clothes. Also, the omnipresent jean jacket is something that makes me feel weird and out of place. They will never be a part of my style, I tried them many times and it never works

I have yet to find a button up shirt that fits me. I am very large busted but have really narrow shoulders, so buying to fit my bust results in a poor fit through the shoulder. To add to the issue, I’m only 5’ tall. Tailoring costs too much and throws off the way it drapes. I’ve tried every kind of fabric, as well. I don’t bother anymore.

I really enjoy your channel and many tips in hybrid video were amazing! However as someone with a big chest that requires a very specific kind of button up shirt, I don’t think you nailed it on the tips for the curvier among us. How about a collab with Jessica Neistadt? She know how to rock a crisp white shirt even with a big chest to waist ratio.
