My beardie lived to 12. He lived in a 40 gallon tank, I got him as a juvenile from petco when I was 16. Over the years I tried sand, reptcarpet and eventually I kept him on towel with tile over top. He was kept with a strip uvb and 90 watt basking bulb. He never had a water bowl. He got soaks semi regularly. He enjoyed basking on the window sill with the window open and would climb on the screen and bask in the summer months. His main staple was spring mix, I would regularly feed him dandelion greens, his favorite thing ever was dandelion flowers as well as the pink bearded dragon bites and of course a variety of live food, he also enjoyed canned crickets as well. After his last brumation he looked extremely dehydrated. He lost interest or had little interest in food. He actually passed away the day after I gave him his last soak. It was sad to see him pass, but I know I gave him good care throughout his life and we had a good long time together.

I'm so sorry to hear you good boy passed away 😢 I got one from petco and he passed away a month after I got him. I've raised 3 so far and I believe he had a aneurysm in his head or maybe one of those busted veins. Not exactly sure there are no herp vets for like 200 miles where I live. It's sad. I should do it id make a ton and so many good boys and girls would benefit. 😊 but yeah. I feel your pain. I'm tearing up right now... I actually just adopted a full grown adult boy last night from a couple me and my son met in the pet store and he's so happy now. They place he wqs in wqs SO LOUD he slept for like 4 hours ate and we t back to sleep for another 5 hrs. Poor guys. They people had 5 dogs constantly barking roosters crowing loud loud. He probably NEVER got a good rest. The people didn't even have any lights for him and he wqs in such a small cage to where his tail and his head touched both sides of the tank... so sad. I'm super happy we were all there simultaneously and my son asked them if they had one he could have because ours died. 😢 God put us all there I truly believe that. I also praises the couple for knowing they couldn't care for him and gave him to someone who could give him a great life.. hope my story made you feel a bit better. Knowing that there's a big ol good boy being spoiled and nurtured and out of a bad situation and maybe it can help heal mine and my sons soul a little. My baby wqs like my second son... I'm still crying writing this. I can barly see.. I hope your ok tho. Huggs*😪

I would recommend next time you have a bearded dragon to not put it only in a 40 gallon tank. They should be in an 80 gallon tank for their first couple of months and then when they were a year old two years old, they should be in a cage no bigger than 120 gallons, but do with that what you will
@codyschwoch5451 Жыл бұрын
The only two reasons why I say this this is because a online and bearded dragon lovers on all forms see it but also, that would be like putting a adult python and a 40 gallon tank. It’s not gonna get any bigger you’re just gonna stop the growth of it and possibly do more damage then you think you’re doing

I will always remember the day when my parents brought home a beardie. We named him Ozzie (The lizard of Oz) the only reason my parents brought him home was because he lost one of his legs and I was convinced he was a reincarnation of hiccup because he lost the same leg in the same place as hiccup. He was so chill, and amazing- atm he is 1.5 years old and a very happy boi! we even have a girlfriend for him because I have a friend that has a female bearded dragon.

Our guy is 13 and still doing well. My best advice for feeding greens, which I know can be tricky...find a veggie they like (ours likes spaghetti squash) and get a food chopper. Then chop your greens fairly small and mix them in a separate bowl with the veggies. Make sure to have more of the veggies, then they just eat the greens along with it, not really noticing. We also mix in the vitamins, calcium powder. Very helpful video, thanks for sharing!

I'm fairly new to owning a dragon. 40 gal tank, tile and paper towels flooring, 105F basking 80 cool side H8 10in bulb UVB. I'm struggling with humidity and basking with an electric thermostat shows 85 F on the basking sight and doesn't like to climb. She seems very lazy but worst is she will not eat her vegetables. We had a vet visit and treated for parasites. She has a hunch on her back cause I didn't understand UVB over the winter Jan-April. She's getting outside time daily, a shallow bath which always leads to a mega poo. I need help with more heat (I think) and vegetables. Please and thank you
@matthawk045 ай бұрын
@@beatrixkiddo5 it sounds like you have a good setup for your beardie. Very similar to mine with the tile, much easier to maintain. The basking isn't horrible at 85 but you may just need to raise the basking spot a little closer to the light and that might raise the temps. Just watch your beardie's reactions as they'll move away if it's too hot for them. Definitely get plenty of UVB everyday and they'll stay pretty happy. As for the salads and veggies, I highly recommend sprinkling some bee pollen on top of the salads. It's a little pricey (not unreasonable), but it lasts a long time. They absolutely love it! I also baby mine and feed him with tongs which seems to make him more comfy, but he is an older guy. Daily poos and baths are a great sign! Sounds like you're doing fine, just give them lots of love, attention makes them very happy 👍

I have the 3rd edition, and it is super helpful. I've had my beardies for about a year and a half, both rescues. My original male was sick when I adopted him w my female, which I knew. He gave me a wonderful year of love, sass and attitude. My new male, Rambo, is approx 8 months old. The book I mentioned has been extremely helpful. Beardies are very amazing pets, and I hope you and yours have many many happy years together ❤❤

I have never had an issue with a possible drowning, but i have noticed a few of my beardies like to pretty much dunk their whole head into the water and drink that way. needless to say, i escort them to the shallower end of the tub and make sure they don't wander back to the deeper area. baths are also a good way to help with shedding! from my observation, it tends to loosen up the scales if they are at a certain point in the shedding process.

I have to share a tragedy my daughter & I experienced. Now we had been doing a lot of research on reptiles specifically Whites Tree Frogs (we started with 3 of them. I ordered them from a retired Biology professor who started a tropical fish store, as well as becoming a big help to lots of families. Anyway, the frogs, as well as the rest of the species, fire belly Newts with their own pond. My daughter & I were having so much fun, before I realized it, I had built a small terrarium. Dirt on one side, water on the other along with live plants. I was pretty proud. We had done well for about a year, then everything started dying. So true to my fearless little girl about 8 years old, she started discussing Beardies in every conversation. So, I began calling all my friends who were vet techs. In no time we were asked to come to one of our local vet's office. As soon as my daughter laid her eyes on that Beardie, she was in love. So, I did my best. I obtained a 55 gallon tank from my fish specialist that had a huge crack from one corner to another, so he couldn't & had never had any fish or anything else in that tank. My little girl took over his care completely & after a period of me double checking her work, I was able to take over. She even got up 30 min early to feed & care for him before school. My part was to make sure she had everything she needed to keep him healthy. I was in a terrible hurry running errands & Sandy (the dragon) needed some live food. Being in a hurry, I stopped at a bait store & bought a dozen crickets. Warning, never buy food for your pet that was meant for fish bait. Poor Sandy was found deceased by my daughter about a week later. I'm pretty sure he got a virus or parasite that killed him. Lesson: Buy or obtain your live food especially from a pet store or someone you know who raise their own live food. Has this ever happened to anyone else

Some good information, I was left with some questions though. In parenthesis. Get them a proper enclosure (some guidelines here, by age or size?). Get them appropriate heat, note that non-climbers will not get closer to the lamp and may get cold. (So, get them a stone to walk up? Or a shorter enclosure or higher wattage heater lamp?) Substrate is important, and sand is bad. (Alright, what is good, what choices we have, do they change with age?). Make sure it it eats after laying eggs (great). Do not breed for fun (sensible). Do not pick it up after it drinks water when getting a bath, (are they supposed to drink lots of water?) Sanitize everything when cleaning (What should and you shouldn't use to sanitize. I heard vinegar could work, definitively not chemicals. Right?) Thanks much.

Wanted to ask your advice here. I'm old school. Kept dragons for 34 years. Always got UVB and heat bulbs from local pet store, whatever they had. Didn't pay too much attention to the brand. I lost my last dragon a year ago and 2024 has been really rough. But getting better, and someone wants me to take their one year old female. I now know that Arcadia makes the best UVB. But do I need the 12% or the 14%? And what kind of heat lamp is best in the basking area? I never once had a problem with any of the brands of lights that are now well known but this time around I want the best. What do you recommend? And btw,I LOVE watching your videos. They're informative, entertaining and even funny! Love you and been watching you for years now!!❤❤

Try and feed the meal worms fruit and veggies before feeding the worms to the dragon. Especially orange slices because dragons need vitamin c and d. One thing that can really help, is when my beardie, Sandy, was constipated, we put her in a bath just high enough that she had to swim. So put your beardie in a bath tub, what you’ll try to do is see them inflate their belly and that can help them poop. Keep in mind they may poop in your bathtub (my beardie did) but the strategy worked perfectly! We left her in for maybe 5 minutes and she pooped. Also remember beardies need water too! I give mine water with a syringe by putting drops of water on her lips and if she’s thirsty, she’ll lick them off. If your beardie wont drink running water also entices them! Have fun bonding with your beardie ❤ Remember to give them baths every now and then! I don’t bathe mine that often because she hates bathes but still.

My baby Beardie loves climbing I used to have a texture background but she climbed to the top I was worried she would either fall because it’s acrylic or get stuck behind it so I put it behind the tank she has a nice tall 85 gallon tank and a basking rock the reaches 90 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit so she’s doing pretty good

I'm having issues with heating bulb, I had one in 40 gallon tank with 100 watt balb in the tank with thermometer inside and using heating gun that bulb was only heating 40 gallon tank to 84 degrees total, now he climbs up wall vine right underneath heating bulb and basks there and than moves lower on lower climbing vine that's higher than basking Rock which is pretty low and I know too cool for him, so he basks on his climbing vine the wall and the bushes I have in there. I got a 150 watt bulb which is STILL only getting the tank to 86/87 degrees just few degrees hotter, I've looked everywhere on line and videos and all say 100 watt is perfect for 40 gallon tank, but that's not the case for me, I'm also using 81/2 Inch reptile dome with aluminum Interior so I don't know what to do esp when I'm using so called good brands of heating bulbs

Did you ever figure this out? We have two 100 watt bulbs and it’s hard to maintain high temps consistently in our 120 gallon tank. It does get to 105 on the basking branch and 95-98 down on the basking rock. It’s not horrible, but I still can’t see how two bulbs only get it that hot.
@vanessatrinidad77454 ай бұрын
@lesliepage3886 no honestly I don't think i did, I played around so much with bulbs so I finally settled with 1 bulb at 150W for basking and the second one is just a 100w heat emitter I have them both in double dome on his basking side and it gets to 110 on basking side plus he has a black stone bask and hide that he sits on a lot and loves and on the cool side during the day when both bulbs are on it gets to 80/84 (summer time) and humidity is anywhere 40-45-summer as well(I know that's high but he stays happy alert and energetic)in the winter time the cool side goes down to 73/75 with humidity 30/35 during the day on basking side its around 100 and then at bed time I leave on his heat emitter and it only knocks the chill out of the air so it gets as warm as around 70/1 and up to 75/76 when I use 125w for heat emitter
@vanessatrinidad77454 ай бұрын
@@lesliepage3886 maybe you could try 1 -150W and 1-100W that may bump his basking up a few?

Only thing i disagree with is the water source. They should be getting their moisture content from bugs and veggies, baths are pretty outdated, you can drip water odd the bridge of their head for moisture. Adding a water feature in a heated enclosure can increase humidity and can cause lung issues
