@@terraquaman I would highly recommend changing the ground substrate ASAP sand is bad for most reptiles unfortunately these pet stores/companies only care about the $ before the well being of the animal. The sand, if injested will get impacted & clump up inside its stomach causing him to die due to blockage.

As a fellow reptile keeper I love seeing people giving their animals the enclosures they deserve. I think pet owners are finally starting to grasp the fact that these are not pet rocks but rather animals that require space and enrichment to live happy lives. You nailed all the elements that will allow this animal to engage in natural behaviors from digging to climbing. I’m currently working on a huge ackie enclosure with a detailed cliffscape using Zoopoxy and watching videos like these has provided a lot of inspiration. A sidenote: you may receive comments bashing the substrate as “dangerous” but if the animal is healthy and you’re using the right kind of substrate for the species most herp vets agree that there’s little risk. Some species, like bearded dragons, can even become fatally eggbound if they can’t find a suitable place to lay a clutch of infertile eggs. My female laid several infertile clutches over the course of her lifetime and her substrate made it easy for her to dig a suitable spot each time. Reptifiles, long considered the reptile bible when it comes to vet-reviewed husbandry information, recommends several substrates which I believe include the one you used (but check out Reptifiles to confirm). Calcium sand, vitamin sand, and ground walnut shells can cause major issues and I believe that’s where the “all substrates are bad” myth began to take hold. I use the same substrates for my reptiles that their vet uses for her her animals and watching lizards engage in natural behaviors like digging burrows is always satisfying. So ignore the comments from people keeping their lizard on paper towels-your enclosure checks all the enrichment boxes and hopefully it will inspire others to give their animals the best environment possible.
@terraquaman3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much, I couldn’t agree more😊 Actually I’ve changed now to a mixture of sand and top soil with leaf litter and clean up crew. I’ve kept bearded dragons on sand for many years without any issues. However as you say providing theme with a deep substrate where they can dig, burrow, lay eggs and promote natural behaviors is super satisfying 😊 I’ve never worked with zoopoxy don’t think I can find it in Sweden. Good luck with your project 😀

When creating my tanks, I used grout and coarse sand and it worked really well against all the jumping and hunting my beardies did. We have two bearded dragons and one anole. All three are set up in the living room and can watch tv. Every day I move the love seat so peaches can watch( she loves rick and morty). Both can watch the gaming pc. One old cat is always laying next to the basking side of the bottom cage, I guess much warmer. Puff is in a zen on a folding table that holds 600lbs and is a must stay at that height for her mom, my 72 year old sister. My girl is under it as i can get down to her still. It has two lamp stands for lights. It's made of 28x20" vinyl panels that I painted scenes on the outside of them. I also use the extras as a portable playpen. And peaches used it daily when in the 40b as it had lights to use(mvb). I am still a dog, cat person but love the dragons. Hell I love my four year old anole even though she hates me. She's fun to watch at times.

Hi. From a beardy family. They live on hard packed soil, not sand. More risk for impaction when grabbing prey. Please do more research. Serya Design did up an enclosure for a rescued Bearded Dragon. Other that the desert sand it looks awesome.

Was thinking the same thing. I'm surprised how many people aren't aware of it. But unless you're aware of it, you dont know. Shit part is that they're advertised as being from the outback and desert. It's mainly when they're eating they pick up the sand that gets them backed up. But she's very happy and healthy

I’m glad someone said it. The enclosure is amazing but the sand at the end was a bit iffy. You can see the beardie “smell” ( Jacobsen’s organ) with the licks and every time they do that sand can be ingested. Along with every time they eat if the food moved around the enclosure. It does typically lower the chances of a longer life due to the impaction you mentioned and too many people ignore this thinking they live on very fine loose sand when they don’t. Even if they did, wild animals have shorter lifespans anyways and you want the beardie to have a long healthy life. A lot of people in beardie communities claim to loose their beardies around the 8-11 age ( typically with the same substrate)but from what I can see and have experienced myself, when not on sand, they tend to live a few more years. My beardie was on gritty type tile and lived to just short of 16 years.
