What is it that really makes us healthy? Is it regular trips to the doctor, a swift diagnosis, and medicine when we need it? Or do we need a more holistic approach? Today’s guest believes it is the latter.
Dr Gemma Newman has been a family doctor in the NHS for 20 years. She is regularly invited to speak and teach all over the world and is incredibly passionate about treating body, mind and spirit as one - and this forms the basis of her brand new book, Get Well Stay Well - The Six Healing Health Habits You Need To Know.
Like me, Gemma increasingly found that her conventional medical training wasn’t yielding positive results for many of her patients - so she decided to take a more open-minded approach, studying nutrition, psychotherapy and a range of other holistic methods and combined them with her conventional medical practice. And, very soon, she began to see radical transformations in the health of her patients.
It’s this holistic method that Gemma explains in our conversation today, using the acronym GLOVES - which points to six key areas of life we can address if we want to get well and stay well. They’re ways of thinking, being and doing that should be front and centre in our lifestyles, and, of course, we discuss them all during our conversation together.
Crucially, Gemma, believes the first step in any effective, lasting behaviour change is finding self-compassion, and her approach will help you trust your inner wisdom, feel more in control, and stop outsourcing your wellbeing to the doctor’s surgery.
And in a world where ‘wellness’ often comes with a hefty price tag, her suggestions are all free.
Gemma writes and speaks from the heart and I think you will really enjoy this conversation.

Dr Ranjan, I am sure that you have some fantastic advice here from Gemma. But please can we have some timestamps and it would also be great to have a 10-15 summary for those who do not have 2 hours spare. We can then decide whether to watch the full version. No doubt Gemma would end up helping more people and selling more books. Dr Ranjan, do keep up the good work, I have all your books and not having a dig at you, just trying to suggest how you could reach and help more people.

I am finding this to be one of the best podcasts I've heard. The two of you are really showing how much in tune you are with your patients (friends, family!) and how much we can do to shift our own perspectives to help ourselves to better all around health. I have already shared the GLOVES acronym with a few people as it is so easy to remember and then use! Thank you. I appreciate the depth and breadth of your podcasts though I also understand those who desire a quick summary. I have a friend who won't listen to any podcasts because she wants fast information. I love the length, though I listen in shorter increments (15 to 20 minutes at a time) and then contemplate what I've heard. It is giving us a summary of the whole of your repertoire together ~ research, books, interactions ~ and being able to 'sit in' on your conversation is a privilege. Thank you both!🙂🙃😉

I highly recommend this podcast, as it has such good content. Podcasts are for listening to, not watching, so in the 2 hours that I've been listening, I've managed to do house work, water the plants, feed the catz and eat dinner. You just need to watch the last few minutes of this particular podcast, as Dr. Gemma demonstrates the EFT/tapping technique.

So right about gratitude, even while in pain. The times when I was bedridden with M.E., the only thing that got me through was gratitude - I could see a leaf on the tree through the skylight and I was grateful because it was a sign of renewal and reminded me of how beautiful Nature was. The sun cast a rainbow thru the hanging crystal onto my wall and I was grateful - how awesome! A rainbow! For me, on my wall. Beautiful! I couldn't move but these things gave me hope. Never lose hope; never give up. 🌈

That's interesting - now Dr Gemma is talking about the benefits of looking at/being in Nature... I guess that's what I was also doing whilst looking at the tree branch and feeling gratitude. Double whammy! It certainly made me feel better (not instantly, but with repetition, over time, I could feel my nervous system calming down and moving from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system where HEALING can happen).

I had 2 undiagnosed conditions resulting in terrible depression but part of me, despite feeling angry and hopeless, knew that I should be thankful for some things in my life so I focussed on the basics. I had very little money but I acknowledged gratitude for things like running water , a hot bath, a roof over my head, and things that helped me, like a local woman gave me a lovely thick warm duvet and a neighbour gave me a plant in a beautiful pot. Things improved vastly post diagnosis but I agree with what you're saying, gratitude can really help .

I wholly enjoyed this one and hope that we're on a faster track to regaining a generation of doctors who are truly invested in their patient's health. There are so many elements that contribute to overall well-being, that many people are not aware of and no one is looking deep enough to root cause, or psychological influeneces. It's a terrible disaster as it stands. People like you and Gemma and a handful of others give us hope. Deeply grateful for these informative and enjoyable videos.

Am grateful that I'm able to listen to a doctor who finds that his patients are not all put into a box from which he treats them but he sees and tries to help them with their specifics, it gives me hope that some day (before my incurable illness takes me) that I can find a quality of life that allows me to live the best life I can each day and maybe find a doctor to whom I can talk and ask questions to help me find a reason to walk this life more peaceably, I am grateful but when is it okay to ask help for in doing some daily things, thanks again for your worthwhile podcasts and sharing, God Bless you and your staff😊🥴🙃☺️🐦🏡🌟

I tried gratitude journaling and a gratitude practice for months and it made me more aware of what I was NOT grateful about. It ended up where I felt so much rage when I practiced gratitude, it felt like electric waves rippling across my skin. It’s such a fake, plastic, disingenuous feeling I get from deliberately practicing gratitude. It’s not that I’m completely ungrateful. It just works better for me to feel gratitude naturally instead of forcing it.

Time is what doctors need to listen and support their patients. Family doctor works better as the two parties get to know each other well. I know most doctors are working very hard to give their best but as a patient it doesn't help to be rushed out of the consultation room. Seeing a doctor should never be a privilege for the ones who know how to exagerate their conditions or are on death bed. The system needs a major correction so doctors can be helpful and empowering.

I didn't feel rested when I woke up in the morning and I had severe anxiety. I quit drinking after trying at home ketamine therapy and all of my symptoms have resolved. Hey Angela! I'm a hospice nurse and I've had many patients with COPD for 20+ years that were admitted to hospice with other diagnosis (Alzheimers, heart disease, etc) One thing they all had in common is they had a positive outlook and didn't give in to fear. I know it's VERY hard to not focus on the fear. I have COPD and heart disease and a history of lung cancer thar was completely removed but can come back and I was paralyzed by fear for the first year. Now, I'm focused on the good things in my life and won't even consider the doom and gloom I was wallowing in. I meditate and have gone for hypnosis for anxiety. There are guided meditations on youtube for healing your body too. Just how I'm dealing with all my issues. I wish you all the best. ❤️🙏🏼

Maybe he was having headaches because he disowned his father over something stupid. 'Oh, you have debt? I no longer want you in my life.' Is incredibly harsh and unloving. Instead maybe he should have sat down with him and figured out a plan for him to get out of debt. He should have been more understanding that things happen and some people don't know how to deal or budget or raise income when necessary. He could have helped him file bankruptcy or something. Some people are so unforgiving and harsh instead of trying to see root causes and coming together to fix situations. I don't see how that can rest well on someone's soul and of course he's not doing well because now his children won't have their grandfather over an issue that could have been solved. Don't be a jerk to everyone in your life should also be a goal for a healthy well being because this life is temporary and we all will have to face the consequences of our actions and that includes our ability to forgive. Forgive if you want to be forgiven and have some empathy and compassion.
@proverbs3150

I could NOT agree more! When you think how much money is spent on getting a child to the age of 18, it’s none of this guys business what his dads debts are. Unless his dad has some type of mental or illegal issues, he should not only stop harassing his dad but he should welcome more time spent with his dad and maybe he would know his dad’s everyday habits better. I pray his dad isn’t grieving over his son and grandchild. The things these millennial children are doing by going no contact with a parent is very popular right now. I think PragerU says it’s about 30% are going no contact. I pray for them. What they are doing will definitely come back to haunt them. The poor grandchild is cheated and may pick more unhealthy relationships to fill the void. The decision to write off a parent is demonic.

So we each have to choose if we want to represent a tax or a deposit in the lives of others. How do we want to show up each day? That is the question to ask ourselves.
