Burnout is a type of chronic, unmanaged stress that has significant consequences for our physical and mental health. A survey by YouGov for the charity Mental Health UK in 2020 found one in five people felt unable to manage pressure and stress levels at work & other research found that a staggering 88 percent of the UK workforce have experienced burnout since 2020.
Many of us think we can keep pushing day after day, week after week, month after month without any consequences. But we can’t. What I have seen time and time again is that this constant pushing always come back to bite, it is just a case of when. Many of us are on the road to burnout without even realising it.
In this video, I outline 7 signs that MAY indicate you are on the road to burnout: things to look out for in your mood, your behaviour, your habits and your health. I then walk you through 10 practical tools you can think about introducing into your life that will quickly start to help.
PLEASE NOTE: the signs I mention in this episode are very common and are not exclusive to burnout. If you have the odd sign and it is short lived - please do not worry - we all will experience some of these signs from time to time. Just be mindful if these signs are becoming longstanding. Also, please note that some of these signs can also be found in a variety of other conditions, for example, depression. If you have any concerns, please seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional ***

@@plasmichoneytrip I was once in that position but I walked away to save my sanity. You will need to change everything. Simplify your life and learn to live with less. Don't try to keep up. Stop and downgrade everything. You would be surprised how your life can change. Tell your family what you plan to do and if they don't understand...save yourself! I live a much happier life now. Luckily for me my husband came to the understanding that I was never going back to that kind of life. Good luck.

Totally agree. Having been depressed before, I can tell there is a difference between current feeling of total exhaustion and failure, compared to standard depression. This is very different. I now recognised I am rock bottom and need a total break. You are a life saver. Literally. You just made me feel like there might be a glimmer of a solution. I am not a failure. Thank you so much.

I also discovered that I may be a Highly Sensitive Person. Whole new concept, which may explain why I have been do good in my job of patient support. I totally understand patients newly diagnosed with a rare cancer, and manage to help them. But as I just recognised my burnout, due to other work tasks, I can see I can't keep going. I am empty and been feeling like a failure. And feeling so guilty. I am also constantly criticized and harassed for not completing what is required.

It snuck up on me. I am an avid science and psychology follower but I did not know burnout was different from stress. Stress happens first. I ignored the signs and then totally hit the wall. 4 years of stress symptoms. Don't do it. I got chronic fatigue and depression. It took me a long time to get back to me. I elimated all packaged food and sugar on my own and I know that helped but quitting my nightmare job and getting out in the world made the biggest difference. Burnout sucks but don't let people say you can't recover. Even my doctor and therapist told me I might need to adjust my idea of normal. Thats how bad I was. Loneliness is a thing. Science doesn't lie. Hang in there people. And great video! Thanks for calling out lack of creativity. Looking back I see everything.

For most of my life I thought I was lazy and didn't care about things like cleaning, socialising, and so on. I was diagnosed with burnout in my mid 30s, took the steps and thought I was passed it. 15 years later I hit the wall again, even though I was taking good care of myself, meditating and resting. Still, I had to work through this burn out, but changed my meditations, learnt more and began to move out of it and finally decided to quit my job just as the pandemic hit. It took me 2,5 years of dedicated learning, energy clearing, and meditation to get out of it. Turns out that I never knew what it was like to not be in burn out. Not even when I was a kid. I have traced it back to when I was 4 when a series of events moved me into survival. Of course nobody knew or understood that those events affected me in a traumatic way because adults don't understand how kids don't understand what goes on around them, and when we don't understand something it's always interpreted as potential danger, and survival kicks in. I'm still not where I want to be, where I can feel now that I'm meant to be and can be, but I can now see that it's right there, accessible and I know that I'll be there soon. Frankly, I think almost everyone in our society is in burnout to a degree. Thanks for bringing up these topics that are so important from the medical doctor angel, because it's needed.

The main cure is money without working for it. You can slow down your run or possibly even jump off your hamster wheel for a moment. Or if you have extra money you can paint your hampered wheel a different color or put it in a different part of the cage to multitask different things.

As a retired 72 yr old introvert, widowed last december, I have only a few friends which has left me scratching my head as to where to find new friend. Of the friends I have, one is even more introverted than me! And the other can't say NO to her children and grandchildren, so both are unavailable a lot of the time. Another lives in Vancouver BC. Then I fell down on keeping up with 2 others while dealing with a dying cat over the summer. Needless to say, this program has identified for me that full blown burnout rather than depression sneaked up and fell over me like a soaking wet king size wool blanket in early Sept. Ive recovered a bit and now plan to implement one or two of your suggestions to start. Finding new friends....not sure where us older people go, but maybe in the process of getting back to living more fully will open up a wider world of people. Thanks for a great presentation!

Hello! This topic caught my attention. This is so interesting to me. I stepped out of the classroom after 17 years as a 2nd grade teacher. When I left, I was definitely burned out. All I wished for the new school year was to do nothing, have no checklist, and I wanted to not feel responsible for anything or be needed any more. No emails, no parent meetings. No lesson plans, no duties, no spreadsheets, nothing! It’s wildly happening right now! I’m not needed! I don’t have to be responsible and it’s the most liberating! Thanks for this video! 💖

I understand the desire to have a spouse. I was “lonely and alone” for years. But a spouse doesn’t fix that. I also spent a lot of time alone and lonely in a marriage. A friend of mine had the love of her life die in a car crash. We can’t be defined by others. The connections he talks about aren’t spouses. It can be, but it can also be friends - at church, gym, down the hall, a phone call away. Positive friends (stay away from the chronic complainers or catty ones) and find one thing each day that you enjoy and savour it (that morning coffee, sun on your face, your cat purring) and then look for more of those. They are there, you just have to find them. It’s not easy - I get it. I had to ditch the “I’m not a whole person without someone else” feeling, and life got waaaayyyy easier. Do all his other steps and tell yourself that you are going to take 2023 (or just a week or a month) to work on your “self” and purposely not look for a partner. Give yourself a dating break. Try it please and see what I mean. It did wonders for me.

@@youtubechanel5243lp My mother has been through a lot and after being alone and living independently for almost a decade, she has finally found someone that I can officially say that brings her happiness. She's been through a lot of crappy and toxic guys that I've had first hand experience myself, as I grew up in adolescence watching it unfold, and now as a young adult living together with her, I can also give my two cents in that he's a really cool guy and that I don't have the same fears around him in contrast to her previous relationships. I agree that it's almost virtually impossible to live on your own in this day and age, depending on where you live in the world. You're strong to have been supporting yourself for a decade, I know that I could personally live on my own, but I'd be lying that I like having the company of someone else present from time to time. This all sounds great and I understand the rationale behind it. Been doing years of therapy, MBCT, took time off, switched employers. Bottom line is that all the roles are similar. If I take an hour after work to work out, it just means I'm another 100 e-mails behind when I get back. Cost of living keeps increasing, jobs are tricky here right now, so don't really have a choice but to keep going. I have the chest pains, severe insomnia, pure exhaustion, difficulty even brushing my teeth, poor eating. I know it's not healthy, but need to keep paying the bills.

Hi Barbara, I hear you, I feel you. I hear that you cannot see that you have any choice. Please just try something really small, like taking 30 seconds a couple of times a day to just focus on your breathing? It can feel like just one more thing that you've got to do on top of the heavy load you already carry, but it could actually pay dividends by buying you a bit more sleep or more focus to prioritise those emails. There has to be a way to insert a little kindness and compassion towards yourself into your life....

I started teaching in 2009 and I now believe, after pandemic lock downs, I've got severe burnout. I quit my full time job and gone casual supply. I just can't shake this deep exhaustion. I've got absolutely no tolerance for any bs that comes my way, I feel I've got no juice left in the tank to deal with it and I'm extremely lonely. I've gone to the doctor asking for help and she did a blood test and only talked about my cholesterol until I pointed out that stress raises cholesterol. I'm trying to quit teaching for good but I'm going thru this alone. But I'm forcing myself to go to the gym and lift weights, play my violin in the Irish group and looking for another job that can help me slow right down and still pay my bills. The lack of creativity is a key point for me as well. All the points raised are what I'm experiencing every day. I've met so many teachers who have had breast cancer or bowel cancer, I don't want to be another fat, white statistic.

I seem to be stuck in a cycle of recovering, then burning myself out again and on top of all these symptoms is the negative thoughts and feelings that come with it. Working on self care now though and hopefully adopting better lifestyle habits so I can finally break the cycle. Thanks for this video, it perfectly nails what I'm going through and great ways to recover/avoid it.

Dr. Chatterjee, you just may have saved my sanity. Your presentation touched on every single aspect of my character/personality and diagnosed point by point my soul's downward spiral. I cannot thank you enough. The pressures we place on ourselves can be devastating. I had to retire from a profession I used to enjoy, one in which I demanded perfection from myself. I was raised in a competitive family (one parent an alcoholic, another a workaholic) and environment where one required self-excellence and to walk away...the "winner." I beat myself up in the process, nay, burnt myself out. I allowed "paralysis by analysis" to _slow_ me down (or beat me up!), day after agonizing day. Be well.

I discovered your channel yesterday, with your interview with Gabor Maté. You're very calming and insightful to listen to. I've lived with several decades of anxiety, depression, and 10 years of chronic pains from stress. I'm glad I found your channel. I've been talking about feeling burnt out for years. I'm glad I came across your channel. I've been focusing on working on myself in recent months. Regular yoga, breathing exercises, massage etc. I'm finally starting to feel like I'm looking after myself - after years of people pleasing and co-dependency. Thanks again, and keep up the good work. All the best.

Honestly thank you for this video. I’ve been caring for a family member since I was 15 and am now 31, it’s kinda the norm to me to just get on with it and to not complain. Over the years I’ve felt exhausted and stressed and felt like I’ve not have any real reason to feel that way, so have just been trying to carry on. I’ve been to many therapists because I just thought I was lazy and useless. Realised I’ve not actually stopped to acknowledge that the work I do is REAL work ( I’m not paid which makes it hard to remember that it’s genuine work. I’ve been shamed by most around me for not “trying hard enough to find work, or that I’m just scared or sabotaging myself” when really the work I already do has not been appreciated or seen for what it is. It’s made me feel like I’m alone and that no one get it or sees the work for what it is. I’ve done uni and graduated whilst caring full time and that was what tipped me over the edge. It’s all become too much. But again I’m not sure how to feel liberated and empowered and seen for all I’ve done. I think a lot of people who are burnt out just want to feel seen and held and appreciated (besides having enough down time) Everything dr describes I feel, I’ve seen many therapists and nothing has ever felt like the right diagnosis. I’m an artist but no longer have the drive or fire to peruse it, I want to stay in bed and nap always as a way to avoid my responsibility. I was also assaulted back in 2010 and now also deal with ptsd and that on top of burn out is tough. Soz for this rant, but this genuinely feels like the only place where I can get this off my chest and feel safe doing it. I’m not sure if I’ll get the validation I need with the carer situation, but this has given me tools to try on my own and am excited to make change, but hope my story can help anyone else out there feeling alone. Sending healing love and peace for anyone feeling this way x

First, I’d like to say that I always enjoy Dr. Rangan podcasts. I feel strongly that on the first point mentioned in this video that it is important to consider whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. This makes a tremendous difference in treating burn out. A great book on this is ‘Quiet’ by Susan Cain. I personally am a social introvert. I get recharged by getting time alone in solitude. Solitude is actually one of my favorite environments; it brings me to life and I really don’t get lonely…perhaps it’s possible.. I have many friends, just loneliness isn’t something I experience so much. As much as I feel, the advice, on the first point would be great advice for an extrovert, I do not believe that this would help an introvert like myself. Introverts, love and care about their family friends, they care about their tribe just as much as anyone else, however their personal needs demand quiet time alone and they do not often find themselves lonely when they get this time. In a society driven by extroversion, it has stressed introverts and been the cause of burn out and exhaustion in our lives. If you find yourself craving solitude for a breath of fresh air, go for a walk in nature, go swimming, jogging, and most definitely consider reading ‘Quiet’ by Susan Cain. It’s on Amazon audible as well as paperback. If you’ve been stressed by too much community or are over burdened by social obligations…especially this time of year. Treat yourself to this book and the empowering knowledge you will get from it. It’s personally my remedy for burn out.

I'm an introvert. INFJ is you're a myers briggs fan. I love that book. I love spending time by myself. I get overwhelmed frequently. But I got the most serious form of burnout partly because I isolated myself. Extroverts don't need to recharge after engaging socially. We do. That is the difference. BUT we are still social creatures and MOST of us will get sick and suffer if we don't engage with other humans. I think that Susan Cain would agree. She encourages introverts to find their way in an extroverted world. She wants us to engage. Burnout can kill. Too much isolation is deadly. I know.
@jayvid9044
@jayvid9044 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. I’m glad to hear that you got to recharge Anna that you’re a fellow introvert 😊. I totally agree with you on that one of our biggest differences with extroverts is how we recharge. Everyone is so different on the level of social interaction that is healthy for them. I feel we are all social creatures, but also so many different levels. For example, some scientists are so fascinated by their craft, they submerge themselves into it to the point of isolation and are just fine with that; for some it’s the lifestyle they prefer. For some, isolation is fine for a month, two months, a week, a day, some people a couple hours. We’re just all so different. Whatever our threshold is, it’s unique to us each and the danger of lack of or even over socialization would be unique to each of us as well. I agree that Susan Cain would say we are social creatures, but I think she would also agree that ‘how social’ is variable.🌿

Just a great interview. For years I just wanted my father to apologize for treating me like garbage. That never happened plus he made terrible lies to my other siblings. Since his death, I chose to think of the man who helped his military colleagues fight their addiction issues. I also do what I can to show empathetic and help those in need. We are a community and there are those that need people to stand up for them. Guess you can say the military thing was multi generational.

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique kzbin.infoUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.

Half an hour ago, I realized that today I felt totally fine and relaxed, and just normal, without issues, interested in something I used to be interested in, for the first time in quite a lot of years in which I had serious mental health issues! Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of difficult things on my to do list, but i feel fine. So, i guess, you can overcome it! I realized I was burnt out about 10 months ago and since then I did basically nothing except taking care of things I let slide before, and lived on my savings, mostly stayed home, for a whole year, and I guess it helped.

I just did a detailed post which failed to postcwhen i edited spelling! So, rather than redo as it took ages . .. its a revalation that you can fix burn out. What this says is what i CAN DO ... tiny steps are ok. I can get fixed. I can set boundaries and say no. I can do little things that matter for mind body heart. I thought i could never be the same again. Even when we think we know and are educated as you say, it doesnt get us fixing things. I now feel affirmed my tiny steps for each area are good enough. I really think this could be every gps "go to" video. Mine thinks its all hrt. Its not. Epic stress levels say otherwise. Mind body heart/soul. Its the knowledge that i CAN fix me to my own personal limits and boundaries .. and i thought otherwise. Epic information broken down this way is insightful genius. Last time i felt like that was Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance ... a brick at a time. Thank you for your knowledge and passion. Im rethinking on so many levels and areas of my life now. No matter how much we think we understand, im reminded its never enough to not be humble enough to learn more. In fact, as said here, knowledge is not action. Its the action we needed. Thank you
