11:20 “Now you can’t listen to all of the music because some music sounds bad.” Sort of off-topic, but technically on. I really think Dolby and Apple have completely dropped the ball in not marketing Atmos to audiophiles. The main reason I listen to almost exclusively Atmos music these days isn’t because of the “Spatial-ness”, it’s because of the dramatically improved dynamics. You also don’t need multi-thousand dollar speakers to hear the difference. PS This is also something Jonathan Horst could stand to learn.

As a person with 2 audiophile-ish grade setups, one of which is an atmos home theater, I can tell you that there are recordings that no matter the processing that they will sound like garbage. They were just mixed bad, performed bad, bad equipment was used or set up incorrectly. Whatever the reason, a song you know to sound good on a regular sound system will sound like garbage once you can hear all of the nuances in the recording. On the other hand, there will be songs where it is like you are listening to them for the first time. You will have never imagined how much detail there is in some recordings until you hear them on a really good setup.
@wright96d

@@D4rk51d332 Well, of course, some music is just horrible at its core. I was more speaking to the swath of loudness war casualties. It used to be the exception, but it’s now the rule. Unless an artist is passionate about keeping the dynamics intact, everything from top 40 hits to random no name artists have the dynamics squashed like a bug. Essentially every song produced in this, the year of our lord 2023, has, at least, passages, that sound constrained and crushed by the reduced dynamics. And those same passages sound wonderful with the improved dynamics an Atmos mix brings.

@@tim3172 Standard is one meter, but a lot of manufacturers don't adhere to it either. Loudt doesn't list measurement details on their spec sheet either. And I've seen spec lists all over the place within the HiFi space from various manufacturers. This is sold as a sustainable product yet uses proprietary software which will make the speakers obsolete if the company goes out of business. Not to mention the odd shape of the amp means no one else will sell a replacement and the fact it uses pogo pins makes it very difficult to turn it passive. Sure if these were cheap there would be a modding community reflashing these but somehow I don't think that's going to happen. Thanks for the entertaining review dan but these are not a sustainable product especially considering its a new startup in the audio world so who knows how long they'll be around for

very "sustainable" with the speaker's tuning depending on the cloud, which will definitely go under with the company(which wouldn't be surprising for a startup), and even the basic tuning depends on the app being in the phone stores which isn't a given if the company isn't there. The company could also decide to "move on" and simply forget about updating this app for newer mobile OSes or just discontinue it outright. i.e. It's "sustainable" for about 5 years or even less. For Android users I would suggest backing up app's APKs.

Really interesting to see speakers talked about from a sustainability perspective but I guess it makes sense in the sound bar dominated world we live in. With traditional audio equipment it pretty much works until it dies entirely so you can easily resell or hand it down to you kids/grand kids/whatever but for sound bars it isn't quite as straightforward. I have a pair of speaker cabinets from the 80's that were my father's and I've just replaced the actual speaker parts of them because the wooden boxes are still fine of course

There are a few audio physics related mistakes in this video: First, it's mentioned that the difference in sound amplitude from the wall reflections can be equalized in EQ software. This in untrue. Our ears hear the reflections as a combination of amplitude increase *and* phase shift. If the side without equal reflections is equalized up to match the measured response of the side with the reflections, the user will still hear the reflected side as not only being loud, but also being more spacious. It's a bit more complex than "make louder to make equal". The only realistic use for EQ is to lower the peaks in bass, and make wide-Q changes to frequency response (which should be made equally to both speakers to avoid differences in phase shift). Only in an anechoic chamber would such EQ changes result in a proper change in sound.

They need to give people access to the DSP so people can tune everything themselves. I don't mean to make it easy or simple. (By all means: profit from the normies that don't understand audio.) But for people that know how (and would want to tinker with it), let them access all the software knobs.

@@your_average_cultured_dude Heck no. The whole point of accessing the onboard DSP is so that you don't have to run software on your computer. I'm no stranger to doing this. I run all my system audio through a DAW to EQ (and crossover) the outputs for each speaker, subwoofer, and pairs of headphones I use. Pipewire is great for this. But the average tinkerer shouldn't need to do that, if the speakers have a fully capable DSP built in.

I'm not sure how much you can do with only stereo speakers. I can see how using a calibration mic with a 5.1 or 7.1 system would be beneficial but with stereo yo have to do most of the work physically with practical room correction. Having the subs on the sides gives you a bit of room to play with but again, lower frequencies depend much more on physical room placement than DSP to sound good.

6300 for a pair... that's indeed a crowded price point with some big names for competition. For this kind of money, you can get a pair of B&W 702 S3's. I wonder if these beat out those B&W's. Sure, you'll still need an amp to go with those 702's, but you don't need an account and they won't stop working if the manufacturer goes belly up or decides to pull the plug on the service. If you really don't want to spend more than 6300, you can still get the 702 S2's for about 4000 a set. You'll still have enough money to get a really good amp, a streamer (or a combo) and a nice turntable. If B&W isn't your brand, Dali's Rubicon 8 can be had in a bundle for about 6000. Or get the Rubicon 6 with a good amp for bout the same price.
