Paul McBeth during his final year on Innova in old Disc Golf Pro Tour series Championship, he had an issue with older version basket where outer chains were also having sideway chains same as inside and Paul was forced to use his AviarX3 beuse disc was in champion and he could slam putt his discs without worrying on cracking his main Aivar or warping his Nova. Next year these highest level baskets were no longer made but it took whole season for older model to sell out on stores website. Nobody was buying because price was higher then new update and I suspect company just had people working removing sideways chains and scrapping for money for company or workers at end of summer season.

I have the lower end Prodigy baskets on my property. Since they have fewer layers of chains, there is less mass and less "push back" on the disk. I've not experienced any more spit outs of the front of the baskets that any other baskets that I've played on. Prodigy can easily fix this issue with a little engineering effort.

@baronvonnemblesI don’t think so. I’ve noticed these black baskets are different from their blues in that the black’s horisontal chains have a bit of slack on them. The blue ones does not and the blues catch fairly great. That might be it and that also concludes Uli’s experiment where he placed the disc in the basket and let go🤔

Hear me out, so we all know there’s baskets out there with triple chains. What if the outer chains are smaller gauge, then the middle chains are slightly larger, followed by the inner chains being the largest? It would give the disc a chance to pass through 2 sets of chains before hitting the biggest, and I think that would almost completely eliminate the chance of it coming back through the first two chain rings. Or, they design chains that slide along the top just enough to keep them from swinging back so hard. Idk, but our local park has baskets from Amazon that are triple chain and they’re PHENOMENAL baskets and the best I’ve played on to date. Haven’t had a spit out yet when I hit it in the center, only when I throw a bad putt and glance off the left side.

You need a material towards the center that is like a deadening sheet so good puts don’t pass through and will absorb the energy of puts so they don’t bounce off the pole. . And then a set of chains around that to still potentially grab puts that are left or right of center.

A. Is it possible to put like "retainer chains" on the chains (attatched to the chains and the center pole of the basket) so they can't swing out from the basket as much and hence not beeing able to push the disc to far back out? B. I was first thinking of having loser chains but that wouldn't help since gravity would pull those chains down and create the same tension anyway I guess. (But maybe the disc would start dropping a bit before the chains start pushing back and hence make it fall lower and have the "guard rails" stop it easier?)

Brody was trying to think of another sport where this is a problem, I think there are several places you could look early in sports when they were becoming more popular or going professional. One that comes to mind is the backboards and the hoops for basketball used to be problematic in different ways before they came up with breakaway rims, and backboards that could hang farther out over the court and even the types of flooring.

The problem with Prodigy baskets are simply the horizontal chains. I think Isaacs putt went into that square pocket of chains and couldn't fall down like in other baskets, so the chains pushed it out. Last year his putter rolled on top of one of those horizontal chains and went through. In other baskets the putter would've fallen between the chains, and just maybe hit the cage on the backside if anything. I think the only big problem with other baskets is when the chains don't slow you enough, and you hit the pole too hard and bounce back. I don't think we need to change the size of the basket. Just try different combinations of vertical chains to see what catches the best. Heavier chains in the middle to make the last effort to slow the disc down before the pole, and lighter chains on the outside, so they don't push the putters out. Just see what works the best.

The reality is that equipment fails all the time across all sport.its more common in some sports than others but its just a part of the game. Bats break all the time, every now and then a ball goes right through a glove and a runner is called safe since the ball was “dropped”. In motor sports, there are mechanical failures all the time and it cost drivers podiums, wins etc. Baskets failing and spitting good putts, is unfortunate and sometimes heartbreaking when a player loses strokes because the basket “failed”. I think it’s difficult to say but the only reasonable decision I could see if universal baskets at all pro tour events and also maybe a new rule that a card or third party rule enforcer can make a group decision that the out should of been good and perhaps give a retake with 0 stroke penalty, just a re attempt basically. But idk if that’s the best solution.

I would love to see them play on a skinny chain basket. Keep the basket the same size but bring the chains in about halfway. It wouldn't shoot straight back out and make putting a lot harder. Just like Big J and Paul said in last week's video. These pros "gimmes" are at 10 feet now. I know I will get some pushback on this but there is just not a lot of finesse when it comes to putting. Players can putt it from 10 feet away with the speed that would send them 30 feet past and still make it. There really is no risk because these players C1 ratings are insane.

Everybody can have their own basket designs, lets just standardize the chain weight. Chain whiskers thin enough they wouldn’t keep it out of the basket, but would help it not bounce out.

they could replace disc golf baskets with a can jam style basket, similar to Brodejo's idea but less mechanical/automated.

So I was going to try and make a product myself that would solve some of these problems and make a more unified putt "feel". Life is not gonna allow me to invent my product, so here you go world! A 1/4-1/2" thick silicone rubber sleeve on the pole. Step one The inside chains are lighter gauge than the outside chains. Step two Both steps manage, but not excuse "zippy" putts, therefore leveling that facet

Magnetize the discs! There is your fix for Prodigy baskets. Or just place them where they belong in the trash. Both are better options then what we have now.😂

1. Standardize the baskets. 2. Putts count 3 ways, first, it comes to rest in the basket, second, it comes to rest in the chains within the top and bottom of the outer rim of the basket, third, the putter hits the center pole between the upper and lower outer rim, DONE, end of all arguments.

Sometimes in stick golf where the greens are too fast or they have huge false fronts and shots that hit the middle of the green won't stick.

Sounds like different baskets on different courses should stay the standard and players will learn to adapt more styles of putting if they want to compete on every course.

I think the RPM baskets catch pretty well. Why not import them from the Kiwi's? Beautiful baskets that catch well. A win, win!

With any basket, every link on every chain presents the potential to affect how the disc reacts when it hits them. You could not even write a physics equation to address the variables involved. Other sports have a much less complicated way to finish (hoop/basketball, hole/ball golf, net/soccer & hockey, goalposts/football, etc). Solution: Eliminate the chains and the pole, and, so the disc can fall downward and not spin and roll/jump out of a now shallow chain-less/pole-less basket, keep the basket size as is but then the basket tapers, like a funnel, all to the way to where it mounts into the ground. Now aces by players would be much more rare (like ball golf). Long putts would be much less successful and lag putting would be very important (like ball golf). Not trying to make disc golf the same as ball golf, just trying to make how one completes a hole in disc golf to be as uncomplicated as it is in ball golf. To me, more uncomplicated = more fair. Pipe dream , yeah. You'd have to retro-fit everything, but in the long run, these new "baskets" would be a lot cheaper to make and the sport would be more fair.

Someone needs to actually test all the different baskets using a robot or something. I don’t really see any concrete evidence to say that these baskets are significantly worse than others. There are always a few spit outs at every tour event so this doesn’t seem like a super unique situation.

Cept I think Isaac got spit out three times in one round, and his putt is not a rocket like say Gannon's. The cross chains were just holding the discs up and not letting em drop, so when the chains swing back they eject the disc. And one of them the disc still got all the way through and out the other side onto the ground (the very thing the cross chains are supposed to prevent), but it was made worse because they held the disc up higher.

@@tommy8151000I’ve actually played on them quite a bit and I can’t recall ever having a bad spit out on one. I think this conversation is partially motivated by the fact that prodigy baskets already have a bad reputation because they only catch discs in the middle which is an entirely separate concern. I’m not saying that Isaac’s spit-outs weren’t bad, but all baskets spit-out good putts from time to time and I think we need a controlled way to actually test which ones are better.

You kind of have a point, but the design of these baskets is just so much more visibly flawed. Look at a classic DiscCatcher that occasionally leaks one through or off the sides or off the pole, but at least that's usually because of an imperfect throw. With these cross-chain designs we're seeing what looks to be a perfect putt and the basket PUSHED the disc out - not just leaked or failed to catch it, but the design actively rejected the disc.

Velcro chains? Uh, no. We don't need the baskets to catch EVERYTHING if it brushes by the chains. A bad shot, whether it is too much speed or off to the side a bit, is a bad shot. The problem with these baskets is the square/web design. The weight of the chains and the fact that the design doesn't allow for the vertical links to separate and catch the disc is what the problem is. As Uli described...he placed a disc against the pole in the square portion of the basket and it pushed the disc out. That's a problem.

No basket is perfect. People always complain and there will always be spit outs. That said I am starting to think these Prodigy baskets may be worse than most.
