that's because John Tobias was the main writer during his time making the Mortal Kombat games. Why MK9's story was really good is because all they had to do was just retell what ever happened previously and put in some of their own writings into it. MKX and beyond is fully up to the NRS writers and Ed Boon to come up with the story. (clearly they failed because we wouldn't get the story we have now if Tobias was still writing).

I’ll gladly say that i’m a MK1 hater. Not because it feels good to hate on it, i’d be the happiest person if it was good as MK used to be my favorite fighting game franchise. But that game is beyond redemption and we’re way beyond the point of constructive criticism for it now that its supposedly getting abandoned before it was supposed to. You can only leave constructive feedback for those who at least somewhat care. Capcom and Bandai doesn’t care much, but they care enough to change stuff if the player numbers are getting smaller. NRS and WB gave 0 fcks from start to finish.

Its pretty good now. Obviously i’d prefer stuff for free, but we’re not in that era of gaming. Nowadays even tons of singleplayer games are charging for costumes. Personally i only paid for 1 battlepass and i bought every other battlepass from the currency i got back from them, so at least its not SF6 level where one set of costumes for every character was $108

The problem that I have with combos along with kameos it's the length in time not in damage or hits. For example, a smoke sareena combo can be 12 seconds long because the animation of the hits take forever and when you see it a lot of times packed with other problems the game has, it just serves as a tedious chore to sit through.

I will bring up the criticism of hating combos, I am a combo hater as they all say. The reason I do is because once the NRS arrived and certain KZbinrs were making combos, then everyone came out starting to do combos, it’s kinda like the current NBA era being disliked argument all because of Steph Curry who did nothing but shoot crazy looking 3 pointers, and after he made that popular, everyone started to play similar to Curry by shooting 3 pointers all the time, and the NBA nowadays is 3 point shooting heavy, and it gets kinda boring seeing everyone play the same way and don’t use different strategies to win, and the fans and audience of both the NBA and Modern MK are similar by loving the combo gameplay and criticize people who play differently and don’t use combos much, or shoot 3 pointers much. There isn’t no variety of styles anymore because of that, it’s basically looked down upon or insulting by the audience, fans and players if there are players with different styles of play, older MK games and older NBA had some variety to win by the players and that’s what gave everyone character. That’s just my opinion on that. If I get haters for speaking my opinion on combos and modern MK that will kinda prove my point, which is being criticized and insulted for wanting to see variety of play styles instead of everyone doing combos in every match. For the record, HATE is a strong word, it’s just been popular by the mainstream zeitgeist for people to be labeled because they have a criticism of something or dislike the way something is perceived, I don’t HATE combos, people could play how they want and like, I just miss the variety of other play styles and then dislike the people who literally throw insults or hate a person that defeats a player who is a combo style player, they could be beat by someone that outsmarted them with being on defense and zoning them away from them, or caught them with grappling style moves, or more impressively defeated them by just using basic attacks like roundhouse kicks, sweeps, uppercuts & few punches and kicks with using no special moves or fatal blows whatsoever. That’s the type of stuff I’m talking about, the variety of play styles, it should be encouraged too.

You know, the one where he just bashes Tekken 8 for stupid reasons while praising MK1 despite the glaring flaws the game had, that everyone rightfully pointed out and complained about at the time? Back then I thought it was the worst take I've ever seen, and honestly it still is. So now, I can't even take the guy seriously without breaking out into laughter. This one is even more ridiculous because all the criticism people had for like, two years, soon to be three? Was VALID, Kameos were and still are a terrible idea, the story, while having a promising start with the new era just focusing on Liu Kang's timeline, just devolved into more multiverse/timeline bs, and don't get me started on Khaos Reigns which was pretty much underwhelming from start to finish(Seriously, the DLC doesn't even bother to explain what happened to Titan Havik in the end and ends on a cliffhanger without a post-credits scene. I'm not even a writer and even I could do better! They could have shown that he's still alive even if just barely thanks to his healing factor, maybe have him regenerate his limbs in the middle of the argument with Bi-Han and have him attack everyone one more time and force them to fight him again, maybe end it with Noob sacrificing himself for Earthrealm or something, or say his wounds were too severe for him to recover from, ANYTHING could have been better than nothing!) AND overpriced, invasions suck as a Krypt replacement, there are no modes/mini-games like Test Your Luck and such(Even though they added the Towers of Time, which honestly, as nice it was to get some more content, was still too little too late imo), thus leaving someone who only likes playing the singleplayer content over the multiplayer disappointed. Speaking of multiplayer, features that were in previous games were missing, no cross-play at launch, still no lobbies I'm pretty sure, no online practice. Let's not forget charging people for Fatalities, the game being a rushed, unfinished mess that should have really had another year or two to bake in the oven, and being way less customizable than MK11. There's probably more issues I'm forgetting, but I've basically described the majority of issues people had with it and I'm not gonna list everything or else I'll just keep rambling. Point is, calling people "haters" when they aren't glazing the game over and pointing out flaws that are right in the playerbase's face, is not only making him look like a clown that wants fo ragebait for views, but is actively hurting his career because no one but diehard fans will take him seriously anymore at this point. The game is in a better spot now than it was at launch, sure, but again, too little, too late, especially ever since the leak regarding the game and Khaos Reigns being a flop sales-wise came out, and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if that was true. The game really needed at least a year more to polish everything before releasing it. I hope for NRS' next game, whatever it ends up being, they listen to the criticisms people had for MK1, and try to improve on the story, and the gameplay. Kameos definitely need to go. They don't really need to make another MK2011 or MKX, but MK1 really was an example of how you could piss most long-time fans off(And the FGC, I suppose) by doing most things wrong, but only some right, and burn bridges with unnecessary changes like the genderswaps(Yeah I didn't have a better example unfortunately). New characters would have been cooler, like new cyborgs, new ninjas, anything really. But alas. What we have is what we have.

What made 2v2 great imo is that it was a side mode! 2v2 didn’t completely override the game like how kameos are the whole entire game. Kameos wouldn’t be such a big issue if it was just a side thing

39:03 first of all MK9 had much more substance imo to claim the challenge tower was beat within a week is crazy…if you did kudos to you not gone take it from you but 300 totally different and unique battles and interactions and the fact the final fight was and still is one of the most difficult fights NRS ever cooked up. Not to mention the Krypt was so good in 9 and 11 due to being able to explore it and it was fun and satisfying to go thru but nevertheless my prime point here IT WAS ALL SATISFYING TO GO THRU. MK1 really feels like a forceful chore to enjoy and u still will barely enjoy it

This is the thing. I'm not gonna shame a KZbinr for using click bait thimbnails because that's how you get eyes on content. However, the clickbait thumbnails get a bad wrap when the video doesn't justify the content. This is where TUDG gets under my skin. If you don't have any new MK news, do a livestream or make content about another game or something. Don't make a ten minute video on nothing and then click bait the video. If the content is getting stale, get creative. Give people a reason to follow you and share your videos with others.

To add, I agree with TUDG that buying a fighting game for the story is dumb. However, Choas reigns triggered me because that was a $70 add on to the game where they made the most anticipated character, Noob, look like a chump. Who is buying something like that? I'm not saying NRS should glaze all the classic ninja characters forever amd ignore any other characters. What I am saying is disrespecting the ninja characters and expecting fans of those ninja characters to swallow that disrespect and spend $70 bucks twice is a recipe for disaster. Once the writers learn how to respect the characters and take a proper writing class that doesn't involve stealing from the marvel movies, then the MK hate will die down.

In regards to his MK9 vs MK1 content argument... 1. Challenge Tower was actually FUN! to play despite the fact it was a one time deal where u complete it once and don't have to do it again. But you can still replay the tower at any point and it still be as fun as it was the first time round! You can make the argument about the arcade tower too! Yeah u complete it once, you unlock the ending and don't need to play it again but you do it because it's fun. I couldn't tell you how many times I completed mk9s arcade tower and the challenge tower! Because it was actually fun to play! 2. Invasions is one of the most grueling and boring experiences I've ever had in a mortal kombat game, just because it refreshes every season doesn't make it a fun experience! I don't see the refresh and think yes new content, I think oh great another boring grind and I dread it. 3. Final point. The famous phrase quality over quantity comes to mind! People will always praise mk9 for its great story mode, great roster/character designs, fun gameplay, new modes like test your strike/sight/luck, tag team and King of the Hill. MK9 felt like a mortal kombat game and even though it didn't get update after update it was still at its core an amazing experience and will be replayed for the rest of its days and considered a classic NRS title. I can't say the same for MK1.

Also i think most "combo" related complaints are more about the speed of the animations in mk1, combos now have become extremely long not because of the amount of hits, but how long it takes for everything to animate. that and the complete removal of execution barrier. and since we are referencing old games, i played DOA2 arcade modes and survival modes NON STOP to collect all costumes and collectibles. And every time i unlocked something new i played even more wondering if there's a costume more to unlock for 1 character. How can you even say that "unlocking more costumes" isn't more content lol what a tool. there's a reason why he's one of the few people I went out of my way to never see in my feed.

What sucks the most about kameos is that the characters that are locked in that assist roster, they all should've been playable and it should've been a tag mode instead of making a stupid assist gimmick, and what the fandom hate the most in this awful game is the micro transactions, lack of content and terrible writing.
