These are strange stories about VHS Tapes. In 2016, James Meyers was arrested because of a warrant for a VHS tape he hadn't returned 14 years earlier. In 2020, filmmaker Jim McKay found a family’s sentimental home video when he purchased a VCR player at Goodwill. In 2021, an Oklahoma woman discovered she was a fugitive because of a “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” tape she didn’t even rent. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

At the time it's theft of property. Why wouldn't they sign it. If someone stole your things wouldn't you want them prosecuted? I understand that after all these years it became petty but not in that day and time. I'm sure all these cases the people were never in any serious trouble.

Love this. I lost a small storage unit accidentally about 10 years ago. It contained all my family photos, USMC Memorabilia, and personal awards I received in the Marines. I feel if it had been auctioned, someone would reach out, but I think the storage place threw it out, in spite.

My wife and I transferred our family VHS tapes to a external hard drive about four months ago. We have a lot of videos of our child through the years of her since 1995 when she was a one year old.

Make sure to check the data & have a second back up on hand In most cases hard drives & any SSD won't be a great long term storage unless set up as a raid with data redundancy you might also want an off site backup for that I recommend just uploading to KZbin as a private post so you could download a lower quality version of it in the event of a total system failure

I'm on some SVHS tapes my family recorded years 2003 to 2009! honestly i think having childhood videos on tape in a well kept box makes it more likely for them to last a long time and be watched again decades from now, i wouldn't trust Facebook to still exist in 20 years or most digital forms of media to be well kept track of, the digital world changes too quickly

Oh yes! I remember when vhs tapes and video stores first came out! If you didn't rewind your tape before returning it, you were fined! If you were supposed to return the tape in 3 days and didn't the fines started! You could end up paying $100 for a $5 rental! I kid you not! They had stickers on them, "please be kind and rewind!" They were serious about it! I remember family fights starting behind rentals or not rewinding! It was a real ordeal!

I was robbed by a former slumlord of all of my and my gf's possessions years ago, among the items that he stole were a half- dozen DVD's that we had just borrowed from a local library. We were never able to retrieve any of what the guy stole, and I repeatedly told the library where the DVD's ended up, and to bill the slumlord for the fines. The library refused to do this. This kind of bothers me because I stopped going to Blockbuster video because I got tired of them telling me I turned in videos late when I know I turned them in on time. I figured it was the teenagers working behind the counter who probably weren't entering things in right so I would just go into the store and make sure they scanned it back in. That worked for a while. I guess I forgot or didn't have time to go in at one point because one evening when I went to rent a video they told me that I never returned the last one I rented. I knew that I did, so it was a back and forth between me and the kid behind the counter before the manager came out and actually found the tape I supposedly never turned in back on the shelf, which means someone just took it out of the bin and put it back without entering that it had been returned. I considered it to be an annoyance and stop going (Hollywood Video opened so I started going there) but I never once considered my life could be derailed over over having a whole warrant out for my arrest over something like this!
