I wasn't ever the person that payed much attention to IIHS. My wife picked up a 17 Outback based on it being a top safety pick. We hit a F250 at 65 when it pulled out in front of us totaling both vehicles. We walked away without even a bruise, he broke his hand. I'm now a firm believer now.

Not saying that's not impressive, but I was in an F350 that got t-boned by an S10 doing 60 and nobody in our vehicle was injured. (S10 driver ended up with the engine in his lap) I think it very much depends on the circumstances of the collision. Getting hit at 65 mph and walking away with only a broken hand is something I would consider a major win. :)

Um my halogen headlights shine better than the led or other bright lights I have driven in. It’s all about the halogen bulb used and how it is spread. It’s easier to concentrate on a road in the dark if you don’t have a strong bright light that your eyes will have to strain with. Think of it as when your phone is very cold in color on the screen at night. It’s not very comfortable, but when you make it warmer, your eyes are not as fatigued. So I believe that they need to just be smart and make a happy medium. Use better bulbs but do not make them where it’s so bright. It may look cool but I personally don’t think it’s worth it.

Audi’s headlights are some of the best in the world, the only reason the a4 failed is because of the headlight restrictions in the US which means they’re not permitted to use their laser lights as they’re too bright, come to Europe and you’ll see.

Headlight regulations in America are a joke. There is no accountability, in that, the Police are not pulling over and ticketing people for driving with Pink and Green aftermarket HIDs, or people with HIDs in reflector housings, or even all the trucks and jeeps that drive around with Off Road LED light bars on in the city. They aren't requiring people to get their vehicles checked for common safety.

Star rating is relative to what you're hitting. A 1 star grand voyager (aka 2007 grand caravan) hit a 5 star vw golf (2012) Taxi driver in the 1 star had some severe cuts and bruises, the four in the golf were less fortunate and all died. That was a head on collision on a country road at night near where I used to live.
@cjeam91996 жыл бұрын
iVlogBuzz Other factors probably more important, relative speeds of vehicles, occupants, secondary effects. You cannot hit anything much worse than the solid concrete barrier the crash tests use.
@MrHav1k6 жыл бұрын
Well put. To be even more specific, the rating is relative to something with a similar curb weight as your vehicle since they crash these things into concrete slabs. The golf in your example weighs roughly 3000lbs and would thus perform well against something of a similar weight. Get hit by a 4500lb crossover like you see so many of on the road though and you'll be in trouble.
@Y10Q6 жыл бұрын
vw golf for 2012 wasn't even tested by nhtsa. How do you know how many stars it got?? VW don't sell that many cars. Previous Golf never got higher than 3 stars, till 2018, even now they got 4 stars. IIHS uses Jetta data for golf and even that was pretty bad. Head Injury Criteria was 266. Compare that to 5 star rated cars that get 60. Volkswagen is like European version of KIA or Hyundai. Cheap transportation.

@irvincerrato6 жыл бұрын
aleo corona I do believe that is part of the criteria
@Velkanis6 жыл бұрын
thats why they get the marginal rating, bad spread and low brightness. the cause for blinding is bad spread of the lights where they bleed their pattern upwards and why they are so annoying in oncoming traffic or even in your rear view mirrors they are blinding. low beams in here are supposed to be aimed at the floor with a range of 50m no more, no one is capable of that because the patterns always bleed up and end further than they should

These tests are wonderful - but one massive test is missing. The safest car is one that can avoid an accident altogether. A crash prevention swerve test. In Sweden I think they call it the moose test. Another useful safety feature would be a car that stops when it detects a cellphone being operated inside the car! That one may save more lives than all the others put together... PS: I do not want a car that automatically brake for pedestrians as I may want to run car hijackers over.

@jgrandison20046 жыл бұрын
dunhillsupramk3 that's the idea behind all new vehicles though. The car should be destroyed/absorb the impact while keeping only the passenger compartment intact. That way less of the impact is transferred to the occupants.
@dunhillsupramk36 жыл бұрын
i know that is how its supposed to work... a safer car is always better, but what i was saying is that usually in the past Hyundai would fail or do very poor in crash ratings... i remember when i was a child the 1st accident i saw was a motorbike the 2nd was a low speed crash where a Hyundai got t-bone, the driver died, passenger was seriously hurt and so was the guy in the back seat but a little less.. when the fire truck and ambulance arrived they had to cut open the top of the car to get them out... the guy in the other car was mostly fine, and only the bumper looked to be damaged and air bags, the Hyundai was twisted (the passenger cabin itself was twisted to a point where the doors couldn't open) so ever since then i know Hyundai wasn't really safe cars, as i got older then i knew why (they was cheap cars built to a cost and their safety and reliability rating wasn't good) but now i think times is changing as this is the 1st time i'm seeing a Hyundai with good crash rating....

I’m also super glad they’re now testing both sides (since I live in the UK I sit on the wrong side to benefit from US driver’s side overlap crash performance). Reading IIHS crash test ratings is more complicated than this. One thing that matters BIG TIME is the weight of the vehicle. In a two vehicle crash....the heavier one will keep you safer.....generally speaking. So take a vehicle rated TSP that's 500lbs heavier than another vehicle with a TSP+ rating....the heavier one is safer 9/10 times. Even if it has a lower overall rating. However, I wouldn't just go for the heaviest vehicle out there either. Other things matter. Is that heavier vehicle more likely to to rollover in a moose test? Is that heavier vehicle rated extremely poorly in regards to crumple zones and airbags? I'd rather have a 3,400 lbs Subaru Outback with Good ratings across the board....than 4,000lbs truck with poor ratings across the board. Again, its complicated. Would you rather have a Camero with a strong frontal crash rating but weak roof? Or a Mustang with a strong roof but poorer front crash rating? I'd personally probably (for pure safety reasons) get the Camero. It has a weak roof...but its a hard car to rollover too. I'd be more likely to get hit head on in a Camero than I would be to flip it. But, if you do flip it...you'd be safer in a Mustang. IIHS ratings are not as straightforward as most think they are. Vehicles are only to be directly compared against vehicles of similar weight.

If this isn't a thing yet, someone needs to make an emergency over-taking system. Where if there was a car in front of you and you were about to hit it so the car automatically looks at the lanes beside it and switched to it then slows down. It could be safer than the braking as it doesn't slow down all at once but the braking could hurt the person if the seat belt is slightly broken.

XboxCarsForza it also has the best crash safety numbers of any car in the US. The only reason the XC60 didn't make it into the top 17 is due to their headlights. I would be really surprised if Volvo didn't make it into the top safety pick + category with the 2019 model assuming they manage to get the headlights up to IIHS specs. The volvo is absolutely the safest when it comes to crash protection (hence why it still got a top safety pick) but due to the HDLI's research regarding headlights and crashes in the United States they weight how well the headlights much more heavily compared to other NCAPs (Euro, Japan, etc.) around the world.

So a list of safe SUV's and NO Volvo? Really? I just checked IHSI ratings and the XC60 was a top safety pick. Saw quite a few others as well that you didn't mention. I think this was a really sloppy job of reporting. I give you a FAIL.
@Peter-mf2yz6 жыл бұрын
Hey idiot you clearly have comprehension issues. Your comment is from 6 months ago and this Video is from 10 months ago. That means after this video was created and you took a look at the IHSI ratings, 4 months had already passed. They even state in the Video that what they reported was only a handful of the available cars and every week more are added. So I give you an EPIC FAIL since you have demonstrated how sloppy of an intellect you possess.

2018 Honda Odyssey met the top safety plus rating. Just looked it up. 2018 Chrysler Pacifica did not meet the plus rating because of the headlights and child restraints. Would like to say that both vehicles are extremely safe just the same. Reliability on both time will tell.

Chr Gav September 21st 2017 the iihs released there test findings on the 2018 Honda Odyssey. The score was a top safety pick Plus. Apparently for 2018 they changed the game adding headlights to the test. Thus removing its plus rating. So you are right! Thank you. I printed out a copy back in September on this test and put it aside for my records. So this was my first source. So currently if you don't go to the iihs website for this latest information you will find everyone else is wrong or not up to date. Basically if you checked one week ago the iihs would have the Odyssey at a top safety pick plus rating. I guess this can happen with any early release model. I learn something new everyday. apparently the iihs can downgrade a vehicle safety rating within the same model year. To everyone else sorry for the misinformation.

Since the crash test ratings don't apply across vehicle classes / sizes, is it safe to assume a large vehicle with a poor crash test rating is safer in an accident than a small vehicle with a perfect rating? I understand modern safety features can help avoid the accident in the first place, but in the event of an actual collision, seems logical to think a bigger heavier vehicle is safer. Can't imagine a new Kia Forte faring well in a head on with a full sized 1970's Cadillac or S-Class 1980's Mercedes right?

Subaru is already the safest car make in the world, and they're the numbers who prove it. In proportion to the small list of models they manufacture, they are the car make who places more models in the IIHS list of 2018 "Top Safety Pick" and "Top Safety Pick +" awards winners: SEVEN (at least when writing this). m.iihs.org/mobile/ratings/mobileratings/tsps Bearing in mind that this car make manufactures only NINE models (Legacy - Outback - Levorg - Forester - Crosstrek / XV - Impreza - WRX - BRZ - and the new Ascent), it turns out that 78% of these model list are "Top Safety Pick" or the yet superior "Top Safety Pick +". But it has to be noticed that SIX of those seven are "Top Safety Pick +". The Subaru Forester is the only one of those seven that «"only"» (very in quotes) gets "Top Safety Pick". Which other car make can boast of such a feat? With a much wider rank of models, BMW places only FIVE models in this list, like Lexus. Renault: FOUR. Volvo and Mercedes place only THREE models in this list. Audi: TWO. Jaguar, Land Rover, Citroën, Peugeot: ZERO. Hyundai places TEN models, Kia NINE, and Toyota EIGHT, but these car makes manufacture many more models than Subaru. Subaru achieves the highest rate between manufactured models and award-winning models. No opinion, just maths.

People dont factor in safety as much as they should. I suspect it has to do with the fact that most reviews don't mention it - or factor them in when considersing a class winner. I would like to see TFL lead the way and ALWAYS include a safety rating. I feel TFL tries to make a non-subjective means of evaluation as much as possible, but have not always included this in a final tally. If you standardize this like you other criteria, that would make the MFG's respond to customer demand - see timing belt GM videos in response to feedback. Personally, safety is more important than belt design to me and I suspect most people - they just don't always realize it until it too late.

As far as headlights are concerned, I really don't understand why they aren't made so that whenever you turn on your high beams, your low beams STAY on. It seems like common sense to have both of them on when you activate high beams, but on every car I've ever seen, you could only have one or the other on at a time.
@Candisa6 жыл бұрын
Heat is a good reason, plus there really is no need to have the low beams on when the high beams are on, it would only increase fatigue and night blindness. When you are driving fast enough to need high beams, you can't react in time when something pops up in "the gap", you need to prevent that situation. You prevent that by looking further ahead (something on the road) and to the sides (animals that might jump in front). The high beams help you look far ahead, fog lights (they should really call them wide beams) help you see wider.
@MultiPurposeReviewer6 жыл бұрын
It just seems to me like the more light helping you see ahead, the better. If you're going faster, wouldn't more light in general be better?
@Candisa6 жыл бұрын
MultiPurposeReviewer No, moderation and contrast is needed to help the driver focus. Filling the gap and having an area that is brighter (because overlap) would reduce your far distance vision and cause fatigue and night blindness.
@MultiPurposeReviewer6 жыл бұрын
I guess that makes sense. I wish I could just try it though. When I drive and use my high beams, I find myself wishing I could have the low beams still on.

lets just get our heads straight, we dont really need all the "prevention-software", people have been driving for years without it. - they add these things to make the car more safe, but a crash is still a crash and once the car crast, its important that it keeps the people safe. IF they really wanted to make some software to make cars more safe, just add a "phone filter", that will render phones useless once people get in their cars.. a Cage to shield of the phone.. will save ALOT of young people, who are using more time texting and talking rather than staying focus on driving. anyone who are telling me that their system saved them from a crash, are at the same time telling me betwine the lines that they where not paying attention to the road and the "stuff" around it. - people are still more capable on reading the traffic than a system that can only predict distance and braking. keep in mind, a wall just just happend infront of the car with magic so we dont reallty need emergensy braking, if you are driving, you keep the safe distance, and read the road ahead.
@jgrandison20046 жыл бұрын
dkphantomdk ok yeah sure you can pay attention more and be a better driver, but what about everyone else on the road? I don't worry about my driving. I worry about everyone else. These systems more protect you from others, like someone pulling out in front of you. They are great systems and are become more and more advanced.
@dkphantomdk6 жыл бұрын
like I said, you have to READ the traffic around you to drive safely, you have to spot and avoid people being fools. - but once the system is perfected in the future and the car can do everything, like dogding and swirving and avoiding, braking or acceleration to keep you safe, the.. hmm, well, then the system is not needed, because most cars will drive them self without people messing up.
@5stardave6 жыл бұрын
As a cab driver I'd be out of business if I couldn't use a hands free phone while driving.
@dkphantomdk6 жыл бұрын
its not the "handsfree" that are the biggest problem, its the "mental state" of the person driving and talking in the phone. if people call me in my car on the "bluetooth radio connected phone" I pay 99% attention to the road and just 1% to the phone, and keep the answers short.. I drive trains for a living, and we DO use phones at the job, but, then again, we dont have to stear the train. so the "multitasking" is less in that perspective. but we still have to be focused at the rails and signs and lightposts ! ;)
