And we wonder why no one wants to go into education
@DaleHartley Жыл бұрын
No one ever pays what it is worth dealing with students for even 9 months of the year. Yes some people LOVE the job, but we need more than just those people. We need people willing to work in MANY fields... Education, Nursing, General Practitioners just to name a few...they are all overworked and underappreciated. Police? It would be nice if we could get rid of the bad apples without draining the whole police force. Military? we are not in a war, but at least get the guard numbers up so we can hold off long enough to train more. There are many fields that NEED people...even in factories, but that is tough also because companies are greedy.

Exactly. I'm first gen American and my aunt's and uncles sell college blindly. First to graduate, I'm 28 and earn $115k+, no debt. MY NEPHEW - Just got his B.S. in Computer Information Systems. He was headhunted and got a job before he graduated for $150k to start with excellent benefits. I was glad he took my advice and followed in my footsteps. Computers are the future. Also, he was on full scholarships. So zero student loans

He probably had a really good gpa and went to a top college most people don’t graduate with a 150k job lined up
@jwc3104 Жыл бұрын
@@c.f.okonta8815 I agree $150k job isn't everywhere... but a $90k job is pretty normal in computer tech related field. My daughter majored in Informatics, got a 80K job before graduation. Many of her CS friends landed 90-100k job. Finance / Business friends landed 70k+ job. And this was from a state university. If you are employable (meaning you have 3.5+ GPA, at least 1 internship, and decent interview skill) your school don't really matter - You'll be 10x better off than most history major from Harvard who took out a loan.

@jwc3104 Жыл бұрын
@@c.f.okonta8815 That's not what I said. GPA above 3.5 is generally used among hiring managers as a no-question-needed point. If you are below 3.0 then you'll have REALLY tough time getting thru screening. 3.0 ~ 3.5 is ok, but you won't get a job offer from top companies. She went to the big state school in OH.
@c.f.okonta8815 Жыл бұрын
@@jwc3104 not surprised. She had a really good gpa I.e above 3.5 + went to a selective top state university so I’m not surprised why she got a good job offer even before she graduated. The school you go to definitely matters. I’d even say the school matters even more than the gpa.

I would point out that those 44k jobs are STILL MANUAL LABOUR without the college degree, and WITH a degree you will have a job that treats you better, have more free time ( less overtime and it is not salary because those lower jobs are all hourly), and do less MANUAL labour. Take that from someone that messed up 30 years ago getting a degree ( anthro/archaeology so not a big money maker and I knew that going in) and had to do manual labour and work in a factory for years just to try to pay the bills. :)

Forgot this point in my blurb but 100% true. I'm 28, earn $115k+, no debt. Got an engineering degree. Some trades or truck drivers make fun saying they make the same. Sure, don't doubt it BUT I work from home, get treated extremely well, never in harms way, can work my hours anytime I want, amazing benefits, AND I still have a whole lot of potential to jump up to $150k, $200k salaries, etc.

@@aesop1451 computer science. One of the hardest majors, BUT real world jobs are significantly easier than what you do in Uni. Highly recommend it and opens the doors for EVERY INDUSTRY. All industries require technical people and will gladly hire you even if it's not a direct 1-1. Second piece of advice, learn how to communicate effectively and well. Bad communication skills will make it harder to get a job and will hurt your growth in income. If you really do, then your in the vast minority and likely own a business, franchisee, or something similar. Most of the companies I apply to for software engineering have a work base comprised solely of Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, and MIT graduates (and a few other elite schools). Going to one of those schools opens doors in this field.

I highly doubt business and social science majors are making $80000+ per year generally speaking.
@djm2189 Жыл бұрын
Yup everything was skewed hard. Averages? Few in business making absolute bank bringing the rest up. Engineering was also pretty low. I'm only 28 and earn $115k already. Many I know with a few more years are $150k+. The range they had was 25 to 64, so everything is skewed wrong.

Actually a clinical Social Worker ( those who provide mental health therapy) who is licensed in a state can make up to 100k depending certifications and employers, which stems from the social science field.

@@Jll6ul yeah but that's niche and requires all that just to make it. NOT WORTH IT. You're not even guaranteed that. I earned my first 100k at 26 and only have a bachelor's, no certs. If you're choosing a degree to have a well-paying and secure life engineering is the way to go.

States will just have to create more scholarships for teachers. There's a lot of people that would love a full ride scholarship in education with 4 year commitment to an in-state public school district.
@TH-1988 Жыл бұрын
So companies are bias about where you attend college? That's one way to destroy peoples hope in attending college! I wouldn't listen to what that lady says. Pay output and college degrees are base on much more than this little talk here, just do your research and find something in between your passion and what's going to make you reasonable income. Some factors to think about is where you live versus the work field you want. Not every state might have your dream job, so know where you would want to work is critical. And another is the company you're aiming to work for in the long run.💯

So water is wet... im 28, earn $115k+, fully remote, and work like 32hrs/week. Graduated 2016 with a bachelor's in engineering, 26k in debt, and literal first job, me being 21 was 60k... simple. Not hard to google most majors are trash, unless you have a full ride then do whatever you want. College only makes sense if its paid for or you select a high "starting" salary degree. Counselors sell the word "median". Me being 17, i knew exactly what that meant and pivoted to engineering. So get your head out of your you know what and do a bit of research, duh! Turn off ticktock, insta, youtube for literally 10min and youll get your answers😅

The last point in the video, "History Major from Harvard makes more money then STEM major from lower ranking school" is complete bullshit. Yes, there is ONE Harvard history major (best of the best) who makes more money, but there are THOUSANDS of STEM major (average) making shit load of more money than rest of the IVY history major. Even within STEM, There's a large disparity among them. It's not hard to find Computer Science major making $100k right out of school. But for a Biology major, very VERY hard to find a job outside academia. Education and pursuit of knowledge in any field, is valuable. But if you have to take out a big loan to go to college, your choice of major is limited... even for the IVY league.

@djm2189 Жыл бұрын
I'd instead say, stop making a college degree a requirement to teach kids. How much do you need to teach elementary or middle schoolers?? Maybe highschool. Think and 1 year training like the trades would suffice. Thus way lower barrier, more teachers available, and pay the best teachers more vs just tenure.
@Laz3rCat95 Жыл бұрын
I would say yes pay teachers more and I wouldn't quite say no college degree required but the program should be changed to cut down the amount of time it takes to earn it and there should be a greater emphasis on internships. Typically it is a 4 year degree program and you only spend the last semester in an internship program at a school, but I think it would be better if that was extended to a full school year, and beforehand cut down on unnecessary courses. College degrees in general shouldn't take 4 years (or often times more!) to complete, they make you take too many unnecessary courses.
