From an enthusiast buyer's perspective: There absolutely are exceptionally well kept older cars out there and I will always be very thorough inspecting the cars I intent to buy. But no way in hell will I expect to get both top condition and bottom price in the same example. From the buyer's perspective the most annoying thing is when a car is made out to be absolutely mint and priced accordingly, then when you see it it has obvious accident damage or similar that any trained eye will see in a minute. But with honest salesmen with the right attitude I always try to give them as little trouble as possible - I like to reward those who are still of solid character even in today's rotten world.

To me as a customer, a good sale is one you both walk away happy with. Last car I negotiated was for my daughter. Paid the asking price but negotiated a cambelt change a longer warranty. Really enjoyed that video James, ive always liked them 2 swiftys you had. People really don't realise how tight the margins are. That £1500-£2000 margin soon gets swallowed up. On the pricing in one of my videos I talked about my brother going to see a £1600 mondeo and complained that it had a noisy clutch release bearing....I pointed out that I would have it at 2995 with the clutch done, full service and cambelt but then nobody comes because they've seen one on Facebook at £1600.....tricky isn't it

@@chrishart8548 exactly this Chris, it's just managing people's expectations. Anything sub £1500 in this market now gets you on the road with some MOT. @DanielGallivan-qt3fz I've got a 2008 focus. Has a slight coolant leak. Sometimes comes up with a power steering assistant's fail (very rare) under hard braking it has a slight shake. Your customers don’t know how lucky they are. I live in Ireland now and buying a small car aged around 2010-2012 here for under about 8k is a nightmare, we have been to see 4 in the last week and all have been a waste of time. One has been written off structural last year, thank goodness I used car vertical. One wouldn’t go into gear due to clutch issue, one had terrible overspray in places it shouldn’t and one was just rough old dog.. all were described as perfect and two of those were had driven for hours to go see them. Importing from UK used to be easy but now with customs duty and VAT as well as a the Irish registration taxes it’s just a nightmare.. but still may be our only option. cars in the UK are so cheap, and so is your insurance and road tax compared to Ireland

100% agree, i have seen some sh*t boxes advertised as perfect condition by both private sellers and dealers here in Ireland, utter waste of ypur time .Toyota owners in Ireland are the worst offenders. They are under the misconception because they have a reputation for reliability its an excuse not to bother servicing them. The last couple of Avensis ive seen have had no brake pads left and the discs needed replacing too. Wiper blades about 3 years old and no history of oil , brake fluid, coolant or aux belts or water pumps changes. Dealers couldnt care less and not bothered with replacing anything either. Wash them, top up the oil and onto the forecourt it goes with no service, yet advertised as perfect, serviced and ready to go? Sure why would they bother, most people dont know what a water pump is. Get it out the door and hope it doesnt fall apart within 3mths. Its the wild west out there. I wish we had more 2nd hand dealers like James, he is an example of how it should be done

James, make sure that Sportage is run on E5 petrol ONLY (Super Unleaded) it's the lesser standard fuel that causes carbon build up on direct injection petrol engines.

just the shape yaris im interested in, not driven one yet but next trip to wales i know Toyota dealer so im sure want to see how they drive. looking for one reasonable mileage but reasonable price too, as looking for a very long term car and Toyota seem to fit that category and they seem to go on for very long time just what im looking for a car good for next 20 years plus so it has to be top spec and fun to drive, its yaris that shape or another i20 what currently have and new clutch next week before mot its passed last 3 years no advisory on mot, new brakes all around new back box, new tires, belt, brake censor, so car for sure better than i got it and very reliable but as i car for next very long time rust big issue on i20 rear boot lid water collects mines not so bad but coast wales ive seen very bad rusty ones and the face lift that not fix that issue should be a recall design screw up so what really im in two minds with i20, reliable and up to now cheap to maintain well but rust , the other option fiesta the titanium spec so has whole page functions, last fiesta was a diesel amazing mpg and never let me down and paint seemed better than Hyundai, maybe a metallic paint might be better on Hyundai im not sure. the 3 cars i like the most what fit my needs but they gone one nearly 2k over last 2-3 years its insane, yes my i20 done loads work on it and this next week new clutch so 1/4 value car i just need a 5 door my back not getting any better and reaching for belt its not good but was in rush to buy car if i wanted to keep insurance running as last car written of by old lady false plates so i wanted to keep insurance rolling as ive got to claim through them made thing easy and a car was only going to keep 6-12 ,months now 4th mot, hope i can find the right car before they get to crazy in price, if my current car was 5 door it be getting fully restored and re paint and rust prevention make it last as long as possible and that 12 year car, all my cars ive bought i know what i was getting never went back to garage with issues as my plan all a long make it better than when i buy the car, look after them well they be reliable and last a lot longer, last two cars been red, do fancy change and do like light blue fiesta or slightly darker blue yaris, who knows will have a look in the next few months see cash flow and savings as i sure want to get some use new clutch

That light blue Chevy Spark is fast becoming the new hole 🕳 in the roof Micra, sitting out the way, feeling sorry for itself.... mind you, it is the same colour as the Micra lol.

I bought one new in that colour. Has the distinction of being the first car I had that never went back for any warranty work.

Don’t understand how people are so unaware in life. I have looked at loads of cars. Remember looking at a 3 year old montego from a garage, it looked pretty scruffy and had cracked interior door trim. Dealer told me take it as it is , we don’t do cosmetics. I think if a dealer is too helpful, people take advantage. Be polite but firm and a bit dismissive.

The scarey thing is if the INSURANCE company repair it YOU NEVER KNOW! Doesnt seem a very fair system if a vehicle is damaged and repaired they should all be recorded on the log book full stop Its just another way for insurance companies to pull your pants down, If we have it fixed you will never know if we sell it back to you and you fix it it will have it plastered all over the log book so you cant get as much for it Its all a fiddle

trouble is with all the online info everyone thinks they are a dealer, but have zero clue about what it takes to be one, quite right sticking to your guns, if they realy want it they will buy it, if not then someone else will be along soon after

I don't think you are that good at mind reading. You either are a dealer or you aren't. There is no guessing game involved. 😂 BTW. turnaround time is important, too. You cannot "sit" on your stock forever. 🙂

This chops, is why i quite selling older used cars, even if you put a car out at a good price, that'll just attract the cheap asses who will bid you even lower. Now, i only sell 0-3 year old EV's , im sick and tired of having to deal with these kinds of costumers. Of course theres great ones in between but, in general, im so tired of old car issues.

How are you finding range issues. Do you deal with a lot of "oh it's not lasting long etcetera etc

When you have 2 people interested in the same car, it's first come, first served surely? How hard is it especially with the phone buyer you had and the car price point?

He's covered this question before - first to lay a deposit claims essentially; however in this case as someone local was already driving - it would be rude to turn them away after 15-20min drive with "Sorry, someone rang while you were driving and I've taken a deposit, better luck next time!". If someone is planning to view the car tomorrow/in a few days and a long journey - he'd recommend leaving deposit to secure the car, in case someone else turns up. At the end of the day, it's a balance to strike in trying to avoid disappointing customers and keeping stock moving.

Thing is you never know if the guy on the phone is gonna haggle you down once they show up or find something they dont like about it. Seems like it gives you extra bargaining power when someone is there and you can tell them someone is already offering you full price too.

My 2010 kia ceed with 130,000 miles on the clock looks like someone attacked it with a shotgun. If I bought one with high mileage and it was spotless , I would be very suspicious.
I sold them a STINKER of a car!
