When i first purchased it i put it to my local garage to do Cambelts, tensioners waterpump etc. It needed a thermostat too. Now that is one tricky blighter on a EA113. 5 hours just for the thermostat . longer than the cambelts etc. researching, the thermostat is common failure on these engines too.

I have a 2014 Suzuki Swift Sport- so it has the six speed box. Absolutely fantastic little thing! Across Exmoor its amazing and just such fun. The handling and composure are brilliant. I bought it a few months back, more as a cheap, fun stop gap, as wanted a BMW m140i but, they were still overpriced after the last couple years madness. Now the M140i are dropping in price, i am reluctant to change as i think the Suzuki will ultimately be more fun on the road, although obviously nowhere near as quick.

You are probably one of the handful dealers in the UK who put actual work in his cars. Sadly there are only cowboys around me in W Sussex and Surrey so it's not different than buying a car from a private seller as I ended up spending well over £1500 on a 58 reg VW Golf mk5 2.0 tdi Sportline wagon (leather interior, heated seats etc) what I bought in February as there were no cars around me that time in a 10mile radius. Even my local dealer had only 6 cars for sale for ridiculous money but now prices came down specially because of Khan's Ulez ripoff...

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the Corsa D. We had a 10 reg 1.4 auto. Constantly throwing codes, I replaced the engine control loom, all relevant sensors. Still codes and cooling fan running, stat replaced and coolant flange. Still same, codes, fan. My wife lost faith in it when it kept going into limp mode, so I bought her a Pug 2008 auto, which she loves. Sold the Corsa for £200 to one of the lads in the garage, the steering motor went on way to his house!! He (experienced car/ psv mechanic) couldn't get any joy with it, so chopped it in with his Audi for a T5 van. Are all Corsas a nightmare? Or did we get a dud? It was a good car for first few years. Great video, and I'm re-evaluting the Suzuki Swift.😊

I had a 2007 Suzuki Swift Sport - bought for £1850 a few years ago - £2300 put into it within 18 months - was a good car when it wasn't in the garage ha ha. I think it had a hard life before I got it and bought it off some bloke who worked next to the MOT centre (in Northern Ireland so government run, but I don't doubt brown envelopes were passed) at night in the rain and it had just been put through MOT that day, a month before required. Did view it initially in the daylight a few days before and did have a wee test drive but had never driven one before (apart from a lesser model that day that had loads more obvious issues) and it seemed fine and looked the part - clutch felt a bit heavy / harder to push in but I thought nothing of it as it was the sport model unlike the one I drove earlier that day. Doh. So my advice would be - if you want one - test drive a few and make sure they come with some service history and never do the final deal in the rain at night 😁 I was just looking for a car at that time but playing Gran Turismo too 🤣

Your man could have been spared damaged hands! Most renaults have the resistor behind the glovebox and a loing flylead that loops around the heater box to the blower on the oposite side. Blowers changes are on lhd Renaults, via the glovebox, but on rhd the clutch pedat/steering column get in the way.

I always prefer cars with belts, not chains. People mistakenly think chains never need replacing, this is not true. 100,000 to 120,000k miles is when most chains need replacing due to guide wear and chain stretching. The more stop / starts a car does, or even worse those cars that use stop start will wear chains very quickly. Oil changes are also critical on chain drive engines. People are more aware of belt failures being an issue, so tend to do belts when required or slightly before. Generally, chain kits are more expensive too! The Honda stat could be due to it having an air lock and someone not being able to shift it. They can be difficult to bleed properly, and may over heat as a result. However it could also be an issue that only appears under load. One of the Nissen petrol engines fitted to the Largo is prone to cylinder head cracks that only appear when the motor is hot and under load. It's always the No4 pot that cracks on them.
@timhancock6626
@timhancock6626 6 ай бұрын
You never needed to change timing chains on old Alfa engines. They ran for 200,000 + miles typically. If they did wear they gave you plenty of notice. What changed was engine design with weedy chains and the advent of plastic timing chain guides that break with age. From that point onwards I prefer belts these days too. You can't trust modern chains, and belts have improved.

BMW M57 engines very rarely have chain issues and are pretty much as economical as the problematic N47 and 2.0d variants that all have chain issues,the M57 is one of the most reliable 15yr old or so engines out there and will run 300bhp all day long , I've had 3 for about 6 years in total and never had any engine issues although some of the 2006 pre LCI variants do encounter injector issues.

I believe BMW's and other exotic cars need a 100.000 mile major service which includes timing belt, chain, water pump, tensioners and belts. And if it has a super charger that also needs to be serviced at the same time. I guess it is not just the exotics that need that service but it has to be done. Now I realize that a timing chain is a lot stronger then a timing belt but is still needs to be looked at at the minimum.

If your going to pick up a used beemer. Better to go for a 3ltr Diesel or an older petrol 6 cylinder that's been looked after. HOWEVER these cars are high maintenance and require regular oil and filter changes. Mines a 2ltr N47 done just under 200k and gets oil/filters every 6/7k without question. First thing i did was have the timing chain/guides changes as a precaution so this will easily be an extra expense on top of the purchase. Issues typically with these cars are the plastics used under the bonnet and expect to have various seals/gaskets changed at some point particularly with the oil filter housing and valve cover. Unless your handy with tools or you have a few quid in the bank i would not recommend BMW for the average person needing a daily run around. It's just the way these things are put together and i have not even touched the diagnostics these things need should one run into issues with the control modules.

I had a 1.8Ltr TC Marina back in the 1980s at the time I was a Ford lover 1600E Mk2 and a Mk3 Cortina prior to the Marina and in the 1st 3 Months of owning the Marina I managed to strip the teeth of the Diff and had to replace the Axle then a few weeks later I managed to totally destroy the gearbox, I put it down to the Engine being way to Torque,y for the transmission anyway I replaced the gearbox and gave it too my sister who had it for almost 20 year's until it fell to bits with rust. Funny thing was the Engine started 1st pop and ran sweet as nut.

It amazes me that for all the so called rules and regulations across Europe nothing has been done about access for items classed as safety items such as headlight and tail light bulbs, a sidelight bulb on my 3 series effectively requires the wing off! Other cars while headlight unit needs removing to change a bulb utter madness. How do they get away with making the chain for the oil pump needing the whole engine and gearbox to come out. Regardless of it being a 100,000 miles before it’s required. Same with timing belts needing a similar level of effort to be done at 40,000 miles or so

Same goes for High mileage Mini's with the same parts. They were not designed to last for a reason. Nothing built in the last 20 years is designed to last to be honest. Reliability in Vehicles peaked about 1994 - 1999. since then most brands have been less reliable... Some more than others of course. I will Quickly quote some highly reliable regular cars from that period to prove my point. : Ford Focus Mk 1, K11 Nissan Micra, P11 Nissan Primera, Ford Mondeo Mk1, Toyota Camry, Toyota Carina E, Mazda 626, Mazda 323, Cavalier Mk3, Vauxhall Senator, Vauxhall Astra Mk2 & Astramax Van.. That's just a few.. There is obviously a lot more.

What you should do is buy well maintained BM's and if I assume this was a diesel, this is where you messed up because there are always telltale signs of whether an N47/N57 or B37/B47/B57 has been serviced regularly and all you need to do is to take the oil cap off and shine a light inside, if it's clean alumininium it's been regularly serviced, however, if it's just dirty black inside, walk away because the oil hasn't been changed frequently enough and the chain is likely fail prematurely along with other potential issues. From late 2014 the 114d & 116d efficient dynamics utilised the B37 engine with the 118d and above using the b47, these are revisions of the N47 with all of the previous timing chain guide and tensioner improvements. If you service these engined cars regularly, you do not need to worry about the chains at all. They are not affected by the original issues linked to the N47 and even N47's can last 200k+ if you change your oil every 8k. Also the engine does not have to come out on any 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 series in both E or F generation cars, unless it's an xDrive. The gearbox takes 30 minutes to remove and the sump comes off without moving the subframe, that's all you need to do and the best BMW mechanic on KZbin does it exactly like this. Trust me, take the oil filler cap off and have a good look inside with a bright light when thinking of buying a BMW diesel, this will save and/or make you money whilst removing significant risk.

@@ChopsGarageservicing does make a difference. A lot of people service cars when when light comes on dash saying to do so. By then they would've driven way more than 10k miles. That is not good. But chains failing due to manufacturing defects is usually far and few in between

@@ChopsGarage it is a bit odd that generation of bmw still has issues with chains. Thought they fixed them in the F10 generation. I know the E90 period were notorious with the 2.0 diesels chains but then again, the service intervals were stupid long. A recipe for disaster if you ask me. on a 2015 1 series l would have thought that the car should have had the newer B47 engine that was supposed to be the answer to the N47 with the glass timing chain. they launched the B47 in 2014 so l would have thought the 2015 car should have had the newer engine that was supposed to be cure for the chain problems

I know my 2015 520d has the B47, but 320d cars typically didn't get the B47 until 2016, so in this instance it may well have been the n47. Either way, it's still worth ignoring the 18k oil change interval and halving it to 9k.

The whole BMW timing chain thing is exagerated. The big problem is lack of regular oil changes, plus there's a big section of the used and affordable user base, I'm talking 1 and 3 series cars, that are young scrotes who scrimp on servicing and redline them daily. I've never understood why their 2 litre diesel needed a 5500 rpm redline, there's little reason to push them past 3k.
