That is so true about Australia. Singapore is closer to the city of Perth than Sydney, Brisbane, and Gold Coast. From the city of Adelaide to Perth if you travel crossing the desert road Nullabor Plain is 1200 km straight road to the border of Western Australia. It is not easy to drive this road, it's like an endless stretch, and even traveling for 160 to 180 km you don't even feel that you are going so fast unless the police helicopter stops you or the drone next to your car.

Darwin is an hour’s flight from Dili in Timor Leste. I lived there for a time, and as used to meet my partner in Darwin. I would leave my home in Timor about 2 -3 hours after his flight left Sydney, take an international flight and our planes would land at the same time in Darwin. On another occasion I meet a friend, who drove up from Katherine, at the airport at Darwin. She took longer to drive from Katherine than I did to travel door to door to Darwin from Dili.

There are empty spaces near your homes. They are areas maybe a few hours away that nobody talks about going to because there is "nothing there". Also, in regards to travel, it is often much easier and less expensive to go to more populated places. These are connected by airlines, train lines, and highways. Also, I have travelled through remote areas in the western US and Canada north of the large city areas. When you drive into these remote areas, there are often signs telling you of no services for 80 miles or something. When travelling into these areas you have to make sure you are prepared for any adverse event. There may likely be no one to help you for days.
