Anyone that comes across this video should know that it is as simple as using the rear GAWR(Gross axle weight rating) and dividing by 2. Your tire load rating needs to be at or above that number or you will be compromising the load capacity of your rig.

I appreciate you taking the time to put this out there I never would have known this I have a 05 F350 lariat DRW(older but runs great) and mine are 118S in comparison yikes. I pulled our fifth wheel as we just purchased both 7 months ago. Looks like I'll be replacing all 6 tires immediately with something a bit higher grade. Thank you for this you may have just saved someones tires, money, or yet even their lives.

It’s amazing how many numbers you should be looking at when towing. When we bought our Prime Time Tracer 3200 BHT all I really looked at was towing capacity on my 2011 F-150 SCrew EcoBoost. Thanks for the video and keep up the great content.

A good discussion on tires, gave me a lot more to think about. Thanks. I also really appreciate your discussions and videos comparing the different trucks (Ram, Ford). I recently picked up a 2021 F350 blacked-out Lariat beast that looks a lot like that sexy Tremor. Man it is a great looking truck, and absolutely built to tow. Keep up the great content. I just noticed that that Tremor has the full sized air dam like mine, not the thin Tremor air dam. Hmmm. Weird.

None of those numbers matter unless you have the tire mounted on the correct width rim. Smashing that 12.50 on your factory skinny rim kills load capacity and tire wear. Its like trying to do a bench press with your hands too close together...or too far apart... People watching this....run a 295/65/20...they have a higher load index than 35x12.50

Great point, the ford wheel was 8.5” wide which is nice and should give you just enough to run this tire. My RAM wheel is 8” wide so running a 12.5 wide wheel would not be recommended 👍🏾
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 2 жыл бұрын
As long as it's mounted to a rim width that is within manufacturer specs, it keeps any rating and load capacity. The 35x12.5 BFG has an official range from 8.5" - 11" wide wheels, the 295/65 is 8-10". So if the F-350 here has 8.5" wide wheels from the factory, those 35's will have the proper rating as designed.

True, but not for all tire brands. I was at Firestone complete auto care couple days ago and many tires on display. I saw tires mounted on a 18" wheels with much more loading capacity compared to another tire mounted on a 17" wheels. These tires are from different brand; one is toyo and the other is firestone or nitto. Also, all terrain type tires will usually have more pay load capacity than a mud terrain tires.

Man thinking about growing up in the trades where nobody gave this kind of information a second though is wild. Mid 90's nissan hard body with 4 guys and 1800 lbs in the back and a 100 mile commute for 4 weeks straight. Never one blowout, lol. It's crazy I see more big rig tire issues than a tile guy in his 1500 with 2300 lb pallet of tile going across town. Vehicles nowadays are way over-engineered.

So what load range would you have to go with to meet the 6432? Is that per tire? Or do you just divide the 6432 by 2 and get 3216 and that would be covered under a load range E? Load range F would be 3,800 to 4000 I believe.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 жыл бұрын
Well some load range F tires can have less load capacity but I always try to buy a tire with a load index of 126 or higher or 80 psi. Load range F tires are a 12 ply, each tire has its maximum rating so just multiply the rear tires by 2 on the rear axle to make sure they exceed the rear GAWR 👍🏾
@gs-pd5ox
@gs-pd5ox 2 ай бұрын
Load index is the more important number. I don't remember the brand, but I had a set of D load 8 ply tires that at 65 psi had 3100 lbs of capacity. I'm actually in the market for another HD. I will be towing big but not heavy. I hate the ride of 10 and 12 ply 80 psi tires empty. Sure you can air up and down but mpg's take a hit in the name of comfort. And who wants to constantly do that? If I can find those 8 ply tires again I will be set. I will really only need 2400 lbs of payload at most 3-5 times a month. It's no half ton ride but noticeably better than E and F tires.

I found this out about the BFG AT a few years ago on my Super Duty. @@troyanderson8879 in my case, the truck was an '08 and didn't come with BFG's from the factory. I put them on after the OEM tires wore out, and due to my own ignorance, assumed any load range E light truck tire would work. Good video and good information on weight ratings. Odd that such a big tire with a load range E has such low capacities. Fifth wheels and goosenecks definitely will push the rear axle ratings of a truck though. In your example with the Ram weights that would have exceeded a 2500 Ram’s rear axle rating and got within about 100 pounds of a Chevy 2500.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, great point on the 3/4 ton. RAM did lower the axle rating on the Cummins equipped trucks and kept the axle rating higher on the HEMI equipped. GM does have a great RGAWR on their 3/4 ton and ram lowered there’s back in 2019 for diesel equipped trucks and kept it higher for gas equipped ones 👀… Thanks 👍🏾👍🏾

@@JB_WhoWork that’s odd that they did that. My cousin had a 2018 Ram diesel and it had a 6500 rear axle rating so I was surprised to see the 2020 with 6050 I think. That’s a pretty substantial hit. Im sure a bumper pull would be ok but a bumper pull with some stuff in the bed might even get close.

The BFGs have been terrible tires for 20 yrs. There are many superior AT tires to be had for less money in some cases. BFGs are noisy, wear like shit, and throw stones like crazy, and don't ride well either. When Michelin purchased BFG, all development under the BFG label stopped. Those tires haven't changed in decades except probably getting produced with less quality.

@@ALMX5DP in Agriculture Michelin was up and coming, when they got a foot hold enough to offset the BFG sales they eliminated the product to allow more sales under the Michelin label and also draw a premium. I do think that in the 90s and into the 2000s, BFG was a leader and had as good of products as there was. It would seem odd for Michelin not to keep up on the BFG name, especially given the US market for off road tires, but I think it is a drop in the bucket against the rest of the spectrum that Michelin oversees. The BFGs are just not what they once were, much like Craftsman, Maytag, Bobcat, and Optima, they have all fallen victim to Wall Street, and like all public stocks, they only serve the exchange, not the customer.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 2 жыл бұрын
@@stuartmeier240 again not sure what that is supposed to mean, given that Michelin bought out BFG in '89 or '90. But the KO2 is still a pretty good tire in it's own right, and the KM3 is also a newer MT that has good reviews as well. BFG is still making solid and well designed tires is my argument and Michelin does not seem to be trying to encroach on that segment with their own such tires, so development for any offroad type truck tire is probably mostly given to BFG since it has that reputation in North America.
