The worst part about Clash and the thing that kills all but about two cards with it, including Springjack Knight, is that they made the absolutely brilliant decision to put almost all of it on tribes that focused heavily on low to the ground aggro, or on cards that wanted you to play low to the ground aggro, where Clash will inherently be way worse. One of the worst designed mechanics not from a conceptual perspective but from an implementation perspective.

To be fair, if clash was on a high cmc tribe it would still be bad (arguably even worse) since you would play more lands resultung in more 0s in the deck.

I actually like when cards have that kind of inherent anti-synergy from time to time. It introduces some interesting tension and encourages you to put cards in your deck that wouldn't typically fit in the archetype you're going for. That said, clash is still a dreadful mechanic both design and power wise.

@@Shimatzu95 It's not about the CMC of the card itself (a lot of Clash cards have high CMC, looking at you Bog Hoodlums), it's that the vast majority of Clashes are either in archetypes that want to be low to the ground, or have effects that are only really relevant in aggro decks - because a shitload of Clash payoffs are "a single +1/+1 counter" tier. There's a reason the best cards with the mechanic tend to be either control payoffs (the cycle Release The Ants was a part of are all noticeably better, with RTA itself having actually seen play at least) or just decent cards that any deck could use with great upsides (pretty sure Spring Cleaning has seen play before too).

​@@MrGertris Unless there has been a rule change without a gatherer update, exponential growth has already been ruled to affect negative numbers as expected, with this particular interaction working as he wants. Any negative powers deal 0 damage, sure, but the char's power will in fact be -1024.

Fun Fact: Ridgetop Raptor was the FIRST creature developed with double-strike. Created back in the halcyon days of yore, when Wizards would run a contest to design a single card in an upcoming block, Ridgetop Raptor was a fan submission. The cards original name was "Double-Strike Dude,", and both the keyword and reminder text are virtually unchanged from the original submission.

Springjack Knight can give ANY creature double strike with its ability, so not 100% as terrible and might deserve to live a little lower on the list because of it. Definitely still a bad card though

My sense with Rockshard Elemental is that in the early days of double-strike, Wizards just got too scared it was going to be overpowered so they made the card too expensive. Double-strike + morph on a 4/3 frame just wasn't that great but perhaps in playtesting it appeared to be stronger.

Char Rumbler is a guilty pleasure of mine, I ran it in my time spiral remastered draft deck and it actually did some things. But only because I had too much mana and my opponent was stuck on lands.

Giant Growth doesn't suck. I mean yeah, it isn’t played in 60-card formats, but it's always solid in Limited. That said, yeah - Sangrite Surge is a million times worse.

Double Strike always brought tension at the table when discussing blocking. Such as, when multiple creatures block and figuring out the spread of the first combat damage and then the second afterwards. Add trample and double strike basically turns into swing and just win bc no one wants to math, LOL. Poor Char Rumbler. Throw in a Braid of Fire or two and you can make him playable for sure.

onward // victory is actually the best card in my budget livaan/flaming fist commander deck. it wants to play big mana spells because of livaan, and it can act as a replacement for flaming fist for a turn if it gets removed. playing it at instant speed adds +3, then +4 at base, so it adds at least 14 damage for 3 mana at instant speed if livaan has double strike from flaming fist.

I like springjack if only because it gives card selection and data about what opponents are likely to draw. Pair it with something like the diving top, and you are more likely to win the clash. Would be better on a better body.

Imperial Lancer is not a bad card in the least. I never got top-8 at a major event with it, but when it was in Standard I won local FNM events with it more than once and it really overperformed in the deck it was in. The deck I ran it in was a Boros aggro deck in the Standard format. The deck liked to play the Lancer on turn 1, then drop a dino on turn 2 like Nest Robber or Relentless Raptor, and follow it up on 3 with a Mentor card like Tajic or Legion Warboss. I won games occasionally on turn 4 and fairly often on turn 5 with that deck.

I rarely cast Victory, but Onward is a very nice effect in my Shu Yun deck. With 6 mana I can cast any pump spell, cast Onward (stacking on top of prowess trigger), and give him double strike to get to 24 commander damage. Fatal Frenzy is technically better, but Onward is a decent backup and I have cast Victory more than once so it's still good enough for a spot.

The only scenario i see the chain dancer being okay is exiled underneath an Agatha's Soul Cauldron. Even then, an activated ability cost reducer would also be preferred to make it 1 generic to give any creature with a +1/+1 on it double strike. Very specific, but overall still not good and there are likely better ways.

If a creature has negative power, it simply deals no damage. It does NOT heal the opponent. Negative power can be achieved through black's -X/-X effects or blue's -X/-0 effects.

I've been playing Magic since Odyssey so before Double strike was a thing and I apparently didn't know exactly how Double strike worked until a couple years ago. I had a Jitte and a Sword of Body and Mind on a Double Striker and my friend had to walk me through beating his ass 😆

I actually run the number 6 spot in a gimmick Pantlaza deck due to being a 1 toughness dinosaur. With the deck's idea being to cast Hypergenesis consistently off of Pantlaza's ability, one toughness dinosaurs are actually really important and that one just happens to be one. I should make it clear that it isn't run for any other reason. The deck is single minded focus with no second option and, due to the gimmickness of the strategy, runs plenty of awful cards just to try and get the "combo" off once.

While Spiraling Duelist's condition doesn't work for most decks, it was pretty brutal to deal with in the Metalcraft decks of its day if you were already hellbent or close to it. And at 4 mana, that's pretty likely.

I think Fallaji Chaindancer is worse than everything above it on this list. Most of the ones above it have an awful floor and an okay (or even good) ceiling, but Chainwhirler has both an awful floor and an awful ceiling.

I actually think Char Rumbler is one of the better cards on this list. It is situational, but if you have any sufficient mana, a firebreathing double striking creature is kind of scary. If left unchecked, it's a very real threat-albeit a very mana intensive one. And if you have sufficient mana, it's also a really good blocker.

Also, having first strike and conditionally double strike has the flavour of "being good at combat but, with help, occasionally being fantastic". The way that it is, it seems ... random
